you will be more likely to get a reply if you specify the title of the
song in the title of the thread. (Lyric Request is already labelled as such if you specify that) Welcome to Mud cat and i hope you find
the song. there may be a helper/editor who can fix this for you..
this is an amazing place--glad to have you here.

Thread title changed. Maybe that will help. Sting and Tom Paxton both wrote songs titled "A Thousand Years." I wondered if it could be either of them. Can't be the Paxton one, I think - Click for Paxton lyrics.

I have just spent two hours going through tatty bits of paper looking for the lyrics , without any success ! However IF you put the name Paul Metsers into Google there is a website and a phone number for contact . He now makes wooden toys in the Lake District , but it seems his Songbook is still available !

Paul Metsers
'The Metsers Songbook'
Publisher unknown 1987

Paul brought out this book after leaving NZ and working as a professional folk singer in the UK for several years. The book, complete with melodies, lyrics, chords, illustrations and photographs, contains about 50 of his songs, including the NZ folk standards Farewell To The Gold, The Seal Children and The Swag and the Shiner.

For those who revel in such guitar tunings as DADGAD or CGCGCD, or finely crafted songs with ecological spirituality, this should be a goldmine.

For copies of the songbook, or just to send Paul cheery NZ folkie greetings, write or phone:
Mint Cottage, Gilthwaiterigg lane, Kendal, Cumbria (Lakes District)
LA9 6NT, United Kingdom. Phone 44 (0) 1538 724707.

A Thousand Years Today
(Paul Metzer)

I visited a castle that the years had tried to crumble,
Shouldering the seasons as the weather wore away,
And as I gazed in wonder the towering walls did humble me
And ever growing weary, walked a thousand years today.

ch The steps into the past were not so very far away,
I walked a thousand years today.

The spiral steps were hollow, the lintels cracked and broken
Cold the iron rings set deep into the clay
As my footsteps echoed, who had stirred and woken
Or was risen up and watching as I thought the years away.

You may hear the shouting at the jousting in the grounds
Or the hammers of the masons who cut and carved the stone
Or Kings and Queens and nobles in the banquet halls sat down
Or the prisoner in the dungeon who awaits his fate alone.

To the lofty turrets from the grassy banks below
Children's voices carry as blissfully they play
And I wonder if they wander or will ever come to know
What it's like to walk a thousand years in just one summer's day.

I knew I had it somewhere!

I have been fascinated reading all these emails discussing Paul Metsers' lyrics! (I am his partner). Paul is alive and well in the English Lake District and yes he is making wooden board games and does still have songbooks available. He is hoping to put out a couple of CD's in the not too distant future, one double CD (an amalgamation of songs from his 5 albums) and a single one of songs that were never published. Anyone interested can contact Paul by email...
paul@mintcottage.freeserve.co.uk. He is hoping to get a website containing lyrics of all his songs! It is wonderful that his songs still have a life of their own and that people are singing them!

Hi Pauline,
Cheers from NZ.
If Paul has a spare copy of his new CDs, Mitch will put him on air, on Radio Kidnapper's.
We've already played a lot of his old record tracks as well as Kilderkin and old Folk Festival tapes.
Luv,
Robyn

Fascinating!

I remember in the dark distant past (1985 ish!) booking Paul into my folk club called The Courthouse Folk Club at Elford in Staffs.

I recall that a good night was had by all, particularly me, as I admired him as a songwriter.

Glad to hear he is Ok and still living in the UK!

Good luck to him and his!

Barry

Pauline, how much is Paul's songbook?
We had one but it's gone walkabout.
