Allies land at Gallipoli = 4/25/1915

Canakkale icinde aynali carsi Inside Gallipoli the mirrored market
Ana ben gidiyorum dusmana karsi Mother I am going to face the enemy
Of... gencligim eyvah... Oh... my youth...
Canakkale icinde bir uzun selvi Inside Gallipoli, a tall cypress
Kimimiz nisanli? kimimiz evli? Which of us is engaged? which of us is married?
Of... gencligim eyvah... Oh... my youth...
Canakkale icinde vurdular beni Inside Gallipoli they shot me
Olmeden mezara koydular beni Before I was dead they put me in the grave
Of... gencligim eyvah... Oh... my youth...

Author unknown; sung by Ruhi Su on Seferberlik Turkuleri (Songs of the Mobilization) [thanx Jack Campin]

(The Turks lost some 100,000 men at Gallipoli. There's some other song about it as told from another standpoint but I can't quite remember what it is.)

To read the Turkish characters change to Western (ISO-8859-1)

Çanakkale içinde aynalı carşı
Ana ben gidiyorum düşmana karşi
Of... gençliğim eyvah...
Çanakkale içinde bir uzun selvi
Kimimiz nisanli? kimimiz evli?
Of... gençliğim eyvah...
Çanakkale içinde vurdular beni
Ölmeden mezara koydular beni
Of... gençliğim eyvah...

Thanks for this wonderful song

130,000 died at Gallipoli, half of them Turks, according to the BBC News. Wilfried is probably closer to the correct figure for Turkish dead.

Note that there is no Happy! - April 25 thread. I suppose that means that Abby thinks that nothing really "Happy!" ever happened on April 25.

Maybe he's right.

:-) Joe,

Thanks for the kindness. The truth (and it's more likely than such subtilty on my part) is that somehow it got screwed up. I thought I posted one.

It's kinda too late but I'll do it now, anyway.

The Australian band, Shekel & Hide, recorded Canakkale Icinde on their 2000 CD, Shadows, and another song, Canakkale Kan Irmagi (Canakkale River of Blood).
