ADD: My Baby Just Cares for Me (Kahn, Donaldson)

I'm looking for the original lyrics (1928, Gus Kahn) to this song as performed by the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra in the 1980s. All the lyrics on the Web (Nina Simone, Cindi Lauper, Natalie Cole etc., even Frank Sinatra) seem to be more recent if not bastardized (I mean, in 1928 nobody was singing about Liz Taylor! let alone Brad Pitt).

There's a singing group where I work who are working on a jazzy sort of round/catch/canon thing with those words.
One group of singers start:
Baby just, baby just, baby just cares for,
Baby just, baby just, baby just cares for,
Baby just, baby just, baby just cares for,
Baby cares for only me

The deep voices sing:
My baby cares for,
My baby cares for,
My baby cares for,
My baby cares for only me.

The middle range has:
My babe I sigh for,
My pretty baby I'd die for,
Cos my baby loves nobody but me,
I'm so lucky.

I can't remember the 4th part but it ends with:
me-e oo-aa

Is that the one?
It just goes round and round until you're screaming to get off!

Is this it?

Original lyrics

My baby don't care for shows
My baby don't care for clothes
My baby just cares for me
My baby don't care for cars and races
My baby don't care for high-tone places

Liz taylor is not his style
And even lana turner's smile
Is somethin' he can't see

My baby don't care who knows it
My baby just cares for me

My baby don't care for shows
And he don't even care for clothes
My baby just cares for me

My baby don't care for cars and races
My baby don't care for
He don't care for high-tone places

I wonder what's wrong with baby
My baby just cares for
Just says his prayers for
My baby just cares for me

I don't know about the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra lyrics, but this should be a very accurate source for the original original Gus Kahn lyrics. So, Mary, where did YOU get your original original lyrics?

MY BABY JUST CARES FOR ME
(Gus Kahn, music by Walter Donaldson)

VERSE
I'm so happy since the day
I fell in love in a great big way
And the big surprise is someone loves me, too.
Guess it's hard for you to see
Just what anyone can see in me,
But it simply goes to prove what love can do.

REFRAIN I
My baby don't care for shows,
My baby don't care for clothes,
My baby just cares for me!
My baby don't care for furs and laces.
My baby don't care for high-toned places.
My baby don't care for rings,
Or other expensive things,
She's sensible as can be.
My baby don't care who knows it,
My baby just cares for me!

REFRAIN 2
My baby's no Gilbert fan,
Ron Colman is not her man,
My baby just cares for me!
My baby don't care for Lawrence Tibbetts [Tibbett]
She'd rather have me around to kibbitz.
Bud Rogers is not her style,
And even Chevalier's smile
Is something that she can't see.
I wonder what's wrong with baby?
My baby just cares for me!

From a site that had Nina Simone's version followed by the original lyrics attributed to Gus Kahn. A copy and paste. Go figure.

How anybody could think (or claim) that the original 1928-30 lyrics could refer to Liz Taylor like that is Mystery.

You can hear a recording of MY BABY JUST CARES FOR ME at The Red Hot Jazz Archive, performed by Isham Jones and His Orchestra, recorded September 12, 1930. The vocalist sings only Refrain 1, as posted by Joe Offer above.

I think it was common in those days for the recorded version of a song to omit many of the lyrics that appeared in the printed version. First, they had to make it all fit on one side of a 78-rpm record, which limited them to about 2 1/2 minutes. Second, the big bands of that era gave greater emphasis to the instrumental performance. The vocalist got second billing after the bandleader, and the vocal part often didn't start until the middle of the recording. Sometimes that left time for only one chorus to be sung.

I don't know, but I suppose all the verses and choruses were sung when the band performed live or on the radio. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks everybody for responding so quickly!   I first heard the song performed on a New Year's Eve party televised by the PBS station out of San Francisco CA back in the early 80's--The Art Deco Society and the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra did a TV show that I video taped, and enjoyed the whole program and the music so much I nearly wore out the tape. I took it to a cousin's house for a weekend visit when an aunt who had taken nurses training in St. Louis in the late 20's was visiting. She could barely walk at the time, but got up and danced the Charleston and the Black Bottom with my cousin and me (She taught us the Black Bottom that nite!!) and told us funny stories about the trouble she and the man who became my Uncle Glenn got into with her nasty old head nurse at the time--they stayed out AFTER CURFEW!!!--but she was the first nurse at that hospital to be allowed to keep her job after she got married------how times have changed!

I have the song sheet in front of me and it's called "Everybody loves my baby". It was learnt by my friend when she was a student in Holland and there's no other identification on it. The teacher could have found it anywhere!
I tried to Google it and came up with Doris Day but that's not it.
The closest one looks like the Boswell Sisters (and if there were four of them, that would fit very well).
The words need four singers and when we do it, first one starts and then the second comes in, then third, then fourth until everybody's going!!!
The words I remembered aren't quite right - here's the way we do it from our song sheet:

First singer (deep voice):

Baby cares for,
My baby cares for,
My baby cares for,
My baby cares for only me.

Second singer (higher voice):

Baby just, baby just, baby just cares for,
Baby just, baby just, baby just cares for,
Baby just, baby just, baby just cares for,
Me-e ooh-ah

Third singer (also high voice):

My babe I sigh for,
My pretty baby I die for,
'Cause my babe don't love nobody but me,
I"m so lucky.

Fourth singer (soloist?)

Everybody loves my baby,
Baby cares for only me.

At the bottom of the page there's another little bit of music that says "Begeleiding" and has
Baby just, baby just, baby just cares for, 4x

When it's all going it sounds a bit like the Andrews sisters jazzy 1930s music.

I've just found the Boswell Sisters and a bit of their song but I don't think that's it after all! Unless that's the way they finish it?

Isham Jones played regularly at the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago thru the '20's. He and Gus wrote I'll See You in My Dreams over the phone - at least according to the biopic with Danny Thomas as Gus. My mother said she used to see Isham at dances and his band was one of her favorites. The Edgewater Beach Hotel was quite a place - it's still standing, but not much to it now.

Now you're buggin' me, Chris. What was the name of that biopic. I swear I saw it.
Oh, here is is - I'll See You In My Dreams (1951). Doris Day played Kahn's wife, Grace LeBoy Kahn. I feel better now. Google is a great replacement for a failing memory.

Weird - I have a tracer on this thread because my wife (Vastavido) is interested in the song, and when it was refreshed today and came to the top of the heap, the tracer list on my Personal page says

Lyr Req: My Baby Just Cares for Me 10 28 Feb 07 - 03:40 AM

where "10" is the number of messages in the thread, but the thread (see above) obviously has twice that many posts. This is a glitchy feature I haven't noticed before...

This thread started out being about MY BABY JUST CARES FOR ME, which was written by Gus Kahn (words) and Walter Donaldson (music) in 1930.

Then Little Robyn confused it with a different song: EVERYBODY LOVES MY BABY (BUT MY BABY DON'T LOVE NOBODY BUT ME), which was written by Jack Palmer and Spencer Williams in 1924.

I started a separate thread about that song: Lyr Add: Everybody Loves My Baby, but apparently the confusion continues.

Jim, you're right.

To get back to the original song, the one that says:

My baby don't care for shows,
My baby don't care for clothes,
My baby just cares for me!

Isn't anybody else bothered by the total self-absorbtion of this silly song? The singer offers his baby nothing, admires nothing about her, just wants to be cared for. (Read: taken care of.) And not to spend any money on her.

It reminds me of the young wife in 'Citizen Kane' finally crying 'I get it! You don't love me. You just want ME to love YOU!'

That's not true, little Robyn confused it with another song called "everybody loves my baby", but definitely not from Jack Palmer and Specer Williams.
So that other page is wrong.

And now I still don't know what the chords of that song are..

Besides, you can do it with more people when you sing every harmony of every singer.

So does anyone know what the chords of that song are? :3

Bye.

The Chords from the Baby Cares For by Little Robyn are as follows: Em, then Em with a D bass, then Em with a C bass and then B(7), so to put it clearly:
Em - Em/D - Em/C - B(7)

And I also learned it in school in Holland, so maybe it's Dutch?
