Origins: 'Sarah Sitting in Shoe Shine Shop'

Subject: Origins: 'Sarah Sitting in Shoe Shine Shop'
From: John M.

Hello everyone,

Below is a traditional bawdy song titled: 'Sarah, Sarah, Sitting in Shoe Shine Shop'  (recording)

             1.  Do you sing this song?
             2.  If you do, when and where did you learn the song?

Any help is appreciated.

Sincerely,

John Mehlberg

SARAH, SARAH, SITTING IN A SHOE SHINE SHOP  (recording)

Sarah, Sarah, sitting in a shoe shine shop
All day long she sits and shines
All day long she shines and sits
Sarah, Sarah, sitting in a shoe shine shop

Sarah, Sarah, sitting in a seamstress shop.
All day long she snips and tucks,
all day long she tucks and snips.
Sarah, Sarah, sitting in a seamstress shop.

Sarah, Sarah, sitting in a sheet slitting shop.
All day long she slits her sheets,
all day long her sheets she slits,
Sarah, Sarah, sitting in a sheet slitting shop

Notes: The earliest text of this song is an undated (ca 1929) fragment titled 'Sally' (#3917) in the Gordon 'Inferno' Collection.   Larry Vincent recorded a version (55B on the Pearl Records label) with the standard title.

I know a different version recorded by Iain MacKintosh and Hamish Imlach on 'Live In Hamburg' (1986):

SUSIE
(Trad / Imlach / MacKintosh)

Susie, Susie, sitting in a shoeshine shop
All day long she sits and shines
All day long she sits and shines
Susie, Susie, sitting in a shoeshine shop
She sits and shines and shines and sits
And sits and shines and shines and sits
Susie, Susie, sitting in a shoeshine shop

Tommy, Tommy, toiling in a tailor's shop
All day long he fits and tucks
All day long he fits and tucks
Tommy, Tommy, toiling in a tailor's shop
He fits and tucks and tucks and fits
And fits and tucks and tucks and fits
Tommy, Tommy, toiling in a tailor's shop

I nearly chased them off the stage the only time they dared sing it live when I was in the audience! I hate being called Susie ...

I learned it from Johnny Collins, who was a genuine ex-vaudeville performer, and had been a member of the Takoma Mandoliers and prior to that, a ukelele band called The Hillbillies in the 1920's and/or 1930's. (There was actually an article about them last August in the Old Time Herald.) I only remember a couple of verses as Johnny sang it:

Sarah, Sarah, sitting in the shoe shine shop,
When she sits she shines all day,
When she shines she sits all day,
Sarah, Sarah, sitting in the shoe shine shop.

Sarah, Sarah, sitting in a Chevrolet
When she sits she shifts all day,
When she shifts she sits all day.
Sarah, Sarah, sitting in a Chevrolet.

Maybe more will come to me now that this thread has given my memory a nudge.

You guys forgot one essential line to the song!

Michael, Michael, running in the marathon,
All day long he hissed and pants,
All day long he pants and hissed,
Michael, Michael, running in the marathon,
He hissed and pants and pants and hissed,
He pants and hissed and hissed and pants,
Michael, Michael, running in the marathon,

I can't remember where I learnt this song but I remember singing it fluently at the age of 7. My mother wasn't too impressed but hey, what can she do really?

"Sarah Sitting in a Shoeshine Shop", performed by the Pearl Trio.

hello all!

I became interested in this song after hearing it played on KPIG, based near Santa Cruz, CA, a few years ago. The recording was NOT the one done by the Pearl Trio, now on Youtube. It was sung by a male vocalist, at a fairly fast tempo, and he seemed to use a lot of falsetto. By far the most daring, seat-of-pants recording I have heard of the song. Anyone know who does it?

The chords are I vi IV V   so in D: D Bm G A7

I learned this song in Upstate NY from Pat Kane in the late 90's. He's still up there going strong. The version I know is the same as Seamus above (I think).

We had some fun one night circa 2002...

Sarah, Sarah, sittin in a Tora Bora cave.
Sarah, Sarah, sittin in a Tora Bora cave.
All day long she sits and ducks
All day long she ducks and sits.
Sarah, Sarah, sittin in a Tora Bora cave.

I learned it from my Dad, nearly 50 years ago now, in the southwest of Ireland, but it was just the first verse (shoeshine shop) and was spoken, not sung. He also had another (spoken) potentially naughty tongue twister which went as follows :
"I'm not the pheasant plucker.
I'm the pheasant plucker's son.
I am only plucking pheasants till the pheasant plucker comes!"

Heard (and sang) this at the Peanut Bar at a wonderful, long-defunct nightspot outside St. Paul, Minnesota, called Diamond Jim's. Cannot remember the name of the female entertainer but did we all...men and women...have a good time singing along!

I know the song from hearing it sung by "Uncle Floyd" (Floyd Vivino--you can find him on WikiPedia) a local North Jersey entertainer. He sings it "Susan, Susan,...." and includes verses sitting in a shoe-shine shop, a Chevrolet, a tailor's shop (I think), butcher shop ("...all day long she plucks the ducks, all day long the ducks she plucks...") -- I think there's one or two more but I can't think of 'em right now.

WorldCat.org shows that several libraries have sheet music described thus:

SARAH (SITTING IN THE SHOE SHINE SHOP)
Words and music by Jimmy McHugh, Joseph G Gilbert, Steve Conley, & Joe Macey, ©1924.

It also indicates it is included in several "fake" books.

Ja-Da (1918)
words and music by Bob Carleton
published by Leo. Feist Inc.

You've heard all about your raggy melodies
Everything from opera down to harmony
But I've a little song that I will sing to you
It's going to win you thru and thru
There ain't much to the words but the music is grand
And you'll be singing it to beat the band
Now you've heard of your "Will O'The Wisp"
But give a little listen to this, it goes

Ja Da (Ja Da), Ja Da (Ja Da), Ja Da Ja Da Jing, Jing, Jing
(Everybody's singing)
Ja Da (Ja Da), Ja Da (Ja Da), Ja Da Ja Da Jing, Jing, Jing
That's a funny little bit of melody
It's so soothing and appealing to me
It goes Ja Da (Ja Da), Ja Da (Ja Da), Ja Da Ja Da Jing, Jing, Jing

Now everyone was singing a Hawaiian strain
Everyone seemed to have it on their brain
When Yaka Hicky Hoola Do was all the craze
Why that's the one that had 'em dazed
The object now is for something new
Something that will appeal to you
And here's a little melody that you will find
Will linger, linger there in your mind, it goes

Ja Da (Ja Da), Ja Da (Ja Da), Ja Da Ja Da Jing, Jing, Jing
(Everybody's singing)
Ja Da (Ja Da), Ja Da (Ja Da), Ja Da Ja Da Jing, Jing, Jing
That's a funny little bit of melody
It's so soothing and appealing to me
It goes Ja Da (Ja Da), Ja Da (Ja Da), Ja Da Ja Da Jing, Jing, Jing

tempo = 140 bpm, tempo di ja da, with lots of ja da

Sung by sheet music singer Fred Feild on youtube here:

Listen to the chorus of "Ja-da" and then compare it with "Sarah, Sarah (Sitting in a Shoe Shine Shop)". Link to "Sarah" video to follow.

Sarah Sitting in a Shoe Shine Shop
Pearl Trio [Larry Vincent]

Sarah, Sarah sitting in a shoe shine shop
In Chicago old Chicago
Lives a gal named Sarah Brown
She's the sweetest and the neatest
Gal in all the town
In a parlor, a shoe shine parlor
She spends every day
When they gather round
You can hear them say:

Sarah, Sarah sitting in a shoe shine shop
When she sits, she shines all day
And when she shines, she sits all day
Sarah, Sarah sitting in a shoe shine shop
Oh she sits & shines, and shines & sits
Sits & shines, and shines & sits
Sitting in a shoe shine shop

[instrumental]

Sarah, Sarah sitting in a shoe shine shop
When she sits, she shines all day
And when she shines, she sits all day
Sarah, Sarah sitting in a shoe shine shop
Oh she sits & shines, sh... pardon me
Shines & sits 'n' ... pardon me
Sitting in a shoe shine shop

[instrumental]

Sarah, Sarah sitting in a shoe shine shop
When she sits, she shines all day
And when she shines, she sits all day
Sarah, Sarah sitting in a shoe shine shop
Oh she sits & shines 'n' shines & sits
Sits & shines 'n' shines & sits.
Sitting & shining, shining & sitting - Boy what diction
Sitting in a shoe shine shop

. . . . an informal banquet was held at the Elks' Club, Wednesday, July 16 1919 . . . .
Frank Sherman, the other entertainer on the program, sang several character songs.
Chief among them was "Sarah of the Shoe Shine Shop." Down in the yard they are still
singing that song.

"Foot Ball Team Honored", The Morse Dry Dock Dial, August, 1919. pg 3.
