Does anyone know the history of a song called "The ballad of Rosemarie or (Rose Marie) about the 18 minutes deleated by Nixon's secretary Woods. Supposedly written by Milton J. Sharp possibly shortened from Schapiro past govenor of Pennsylvania and AFL-CIO man of the year in 1963. He made a fortune on electronics and then went into politics.   I am researching the song for a friend.. Thanks Allan

Nixon's secretary's name was Rose Mary Woods, often misspelled as Rosemary. Here's an article about her at Wikipedia, showing her picture on a TIME Magazine cover. She died this year.

I found a song called IF I HAD A FRIEND LIKE ROSEMARY WOODS written and recorded by Bill Horwitz on his album "Lies, Lies, Lies," 1993. From a sound sample:

If I had a friend like Miss Rosemary Woods,
How simple my life would be!
I'd just give all my problems to Rosemary Woods
And she would erase them for me.
Each time I was wrong, or each time that I lied,
Or somebody made me scared,
I would simply report them to Rose Mary Woods
And she would make them disappear....

Milton J. Shapp (not Sharp; and shortened from Shapiro, not Schapiro) was indeed governor of Pennsylvania. Click the link for a biography, but it doesn't mention songwriting.

These lines are quoted in a newspaper article, "Songwriter Shapp Bemoans Tape Issue, Energy Crisis" from the Washington, PA, Observer-Reporter, Jan 14, 1974:

Rose Mary, oh, Rose Mary, please relate
To our head of state
He must make things perfectly clear
Yes, my dear
He must tell what the bleep went on at Watergate.

Here's another quote from "Governor Shapp Sings His Song for Newsmen" from the same newspaper, Jan. 18, 1974:

Listen, my friends, while I relate a tale of mystery,
A tale so scary, hardly anyone knows,
Except Rose Mary, how deep it goes.

Another quote from "Governor's in Tune with Nation's Blues" from the Milwaukee Journal, Jan 14, 1974:

For 18 minutes you sat there alone
With your foot on the pedal and your hand on the phone,
Then something happened that was mighty, mighty weird....

Rose Mary, oh, Rose Mary, please relate
To our head of state
He must make things perfectly clear
Yes, my dear
He must tell what the bleep went on at Watergate.

THE BALLAD OF ROSE MARY (lyric)...
Listen, my friends, while I relate a tale of mystery called Watergate...
A tale so scary, hardly anyone knows,...
Except Rose Mary, how deep it goes.......
Rose Mary, oh, Rose Mary, help us solve this mystery...
Rose Mary, oh, Rose Mary, you found your place in history...
For 18 minutes you sat there alone...
With your foot on the pedal and your hand on the phone,...
Then something happened that was mighty, mighty weird.......
All the words on your tape just disappeared...
Rose Mary, oh, Rose Mary, that tape was in your custody...
Rose Mary, oh, Rose Mary, didn't you know the fuss there'd be...
Now the experts tell us your sorry for the first...
Americans have a right to know what happened to those words...
The feeling grows and the White House knows that your silent due to loyalty
Please speak up Rose Mary don't be hesitant, as yet our President doesn't belong to royalty
Rose Mary, oh, Rose Mary, you’re not out of the Woods
Rose Mary, oh, Rose Mary, start spilling the goods
You were so quick to judge John Sirica
That revelation was a sensation, it shocked the nation
Now everyone’s waiting for you to sing...
Rose Mary, oh, Rose Mary, everyone knows those eighteen minutes did not go missing
Somebody had a darn good listen
Will wonders never cease, and may Checkers Rest in Peace
Rose Mary, oh, Rose Mary, please relate...
To our head of state, you must make this perfectly clear
Yes, my dear...
He must tell what the bleep went on at Watergate....

"If I had a friend like Miss Rosemary Woods" by Bill Horwitz

If I had a friend like Miss Rosemary Woods,
How simple my life would be
I'd just give all my problems to Rosemary Woods
And she would erase them for me

Each time I was wrong or each time that I lied,
Or somebody made me scared
I would simply report them to Rosemary Woods,
And she could make them disappear

Oh, Ro, Ro, Ro, Ro
Rosy just you and me
Ro, Ro, Ro, Ro
How Faithful can one friend be?

If anyone asks how did this come to pass,
How come nothing you say is true
I would simply refer them to Rosemary Woods,
And you know by now what she would do

Oh, you in your way me in my own,
Rosy we can't go wrong
You just sit at your desk and erase me all day
And I could watch football at home

Oh, Ro, Ro, Ro, Ro
Rosy just you and me
Ro, Ro, Ro, Ro
How faithful can one friend be

Devoted to me like a leaf to a tree,
Like a prison needs a wall
I would get my protection from Rosemary Woods
And the world couldn't touch me at all

Oh, Ro, Ro, Ro, Ro
Rosy just you and me
Ro, Ro, Ro, Ro
How faithful can one friend be

Oh, Ro, Ro, Ro, Ro
Rosy just you and me
Ro, Ro, Ro, Ro
How faithful can one friend be

If I had a friend like Miss Rosemary Woods,
How simple my life would be
I'd just give all my problems to Rosemary Woods
And she would erase them for me
