STREAMLINED CANNON BALL
By Roy Acuff

A long steel rail, a short cross-tie
I'm on my way back home
I'm on a train, the king of them all
The Streamlined Cannon Ball

She moves along like a cannon ball
Like a star in its heavenly flight
This lonesome sound from the whistle you love
As she travels through the night

Her headlight gleams out in the night
The firebox flash you see
The blinds I ride, the life that I love
It's home sweet home to me

I can see the smile of the engineer
Although he's old and gray
A contented heart, he waits the call
Of the Streamlined Cannon Ball

Here's one accredited to Roy Acuff, as played by Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson, as remembered by me (probably missing a verse:

Ref: It's a long steel rail and a short cross tie,
I'm on my way back home,
I'm on the train, the queen of the rails,
That streamlined cannonball.

A headlight beams out through the night,
The firebox flash you can see,
I ride the line it's the life that I love,
for it's home sweet home to me.

I can see the smile on the engineer's face,
Although he is old and he's gray,
In his heart he waits for the call
On the Streamlined cannonball.

Heard it this way from Mary McCaslin and Jim Ringer, in 3/4 time:

It's a long steel rail and a short cross-tie
I'm on my way back home
I'm on that train, the queen of them all
The Streamline Cannonball

She moves along like a cannon ball
Like a star in its heavenly flight
And the lonesome sound of the whistle I love
As she travels through the night

Her headlight gleams on through the night
By the firebox light you can see
I ride the tops, it's the life I love
It's home sweet home to me

I can see a smile on the engineer's face
And although he's old and gray
A contented heart, he waits for his call
On the Streamline Cannonball

Far from trad, but it was pretty.

(First try at HTML; hope you'll forgive me if it comes out as strange as it looks ...)

Back in the 50's, someone (I think maybe a duet act - maybe the Davis sisters) recorded a song that I believe was entitled "Streamlined Cannonball" The first verse (I think) goes:

"A long steel rail, a short cross tie I'm on my way back home the blinds I ride - the life that I love is home sweet home to me"

Can anyone help? Thanks, Tom
