BS: Been There. Done That.

29 Apr 05 - 11:50 PM (#1474734)
Subject: BS: Been There. Done That.
From: Azizi

The sub-title for this thread is: foolish, or dumb, or boring or any other kind of thing you've done and never want to do again.

The thing that prompted my thinking about "Been there. Done that" was my entry in another thread about a boring 9 to 5 job assignment.

I searched the Knowledge & Lyrics feature and found out that as of 11:00PM tonight 'Catters and 'NonMembers' have used the phrase "been there, done that' a total of 334 times. I only scanned the first 50 posts most recent posts and 3 of them were mine.. The saying "Been there, done that and have the T-shirt to prove it" was used two times in those first 50 posts.

The two related quotes that I found to be the most creative among that group of 50 posts were:

"Been there, done that, read the book, watched the play, saw the movie, was in the cast for the road tour, got the T-shirt to prove it"... RE: BS: Ever wonder if you will end up old and a - Apr 24 2005 8:59PM -Foolestroupe.

and

"Been there, done that, took the T-shirt off." RE: BS: A discussion - what is anti-cementism? - Apr 5 2005 4:38AM -   Gurney

So here's my question: What "Been there. Done that etc" experiences have you had?

We should all resolve never, ever, ever to use this redundant cliche ever again, Let it be. Stop it now.

Azizi ... you actually scanned and counted the number of times Mudcatters have posted the phrase "been there done that". I think you should now go out and take a walk, a good walk. Observe your surroundings. Go for a drive somewhere, try someplace different. Go out and buy a good book and some cd's. Go home, settle down to the book and listen to some music. Get away from the puter for a bit. You need a break guy!

I know .... cause I've been there and done that !!

I've used the phrase to describe child raising - 'been there, done that, got the puke on the t-shirt', but wouldn't describe it as dumb, foolish or boring, simply something I've experienced and wouldn't want to go through again although, in that case, it was very rewarding.

I suppose I could say that about my abusive, much-too-long, disastrous ex marriage from what seems like a lifetime ago -

Been there, done that, got the battle scars.

It was a dreadful cliche 10 years ago. So disappointing that it is still being used.

Jacqui.c:

I like your definition of "Been there. Done that" much better than mine.

You said that Been there. Done that was "something I've experienced and wouldn't want to go through again"..

Thanks for that definition.

Number 6, I smiled when I read your post.

Sometimes I do step away from the computer and from Mudcat and actually experience the 'real' world.

But reading the particular Mudcat threads that I select and posting on some of them is a rest & relaxation mental experience for me.
I admit that I don't have that depth and level of mental exchange in my real world. Those who do I congratulate you for you are truly blessed.

And, number 6-if you know anything about astrology and specifically about the sign 'Virgo' [which is my astrological Ascendant sign] you will understand that I was acting out of that energy when I prepared to write my introductory post for this thread. As is suggested in the instructions for those starting new threads, I entered the title 'Been There. Done That' into the Lyrics & Knowledge Search feature to research whether there had been any other Mudcat threads with that name. That's how I came across those quotes that I used. And that is how I found out the number of times that saying had been used in Mudcat posts. Until I read those archives, I had forgotten that I had used "Been there. Done that" in Mudcat posts before.

And Guest, Lucy Wrangler. I agree that the saying 'Been there. Done that'is a rather overused. But I don't cringe when I hear it like I used to do when I heard "It takes a village to raise a child".
First the Children's Defense Fund borrowed that saying from some unnamed African ethnic group. Then the politicians and mass media took hold of it and use it over and over and over again..Yep. And even I have said "It takes a village to raise a child". Been there. Done that.

Anyway, number 6-I promise I will do non-Mudcat things today.

Well, maybe!

LOL!!

I seem, sometimes, to detect a bullying note in the use of that expression, as if the speaker were hinting: You had better at least pretend to be as worldly-wise & world-weary as I am. It is worth remembering that there are many experiences in the world of which one may legitimately say: Been there. Done that. Mean to go there & do it again at the first opportunity.

* being in the Infantry.
* standing behind a plywood door while my brother shoots it with .22 caliber homemade wax blanks.
* having my leg sliced open with a corn knife.
* playing "In Between" with a hatchet.
* mixing ammonia and chlorine bleach to see what happens.
* being on unemployment.

Thanks to all who have posted here thus far.

And Brucie, I do prefer the spirit & intent of the saying you inferenced though I'm trying to remember how it goes..

Maybe it goes like this:

"Teach a man to fish and he won't need money to buy fish sandwiches".

Naw..

I know that the saying means that it is better to give people the means of helping themselves rather than to keep them dependent on others. I wholeheartedly agree with that.

Alright!! Keep those posts coming and we're going to have a heck of an interesting cyberspace T-shirt collection when all is said and done!

With regards to my fishing post, I guess I should confess that

I haven't been there 'cause I don't want to do that...

Yet I'm pleased to say that there's lots of other things I'd rather do. Like, hmmm...I'm thinking...like read Mudcat threads..

and

"go out and take a walk, a good walk. Observe [my] surroundings. Go for a drive somewhere, try someplace different. Go out and buy a good book and some cd's. Go home, settle down to the book and listen to some music."

And I can think of other things I love to do too

but fishin' aint one of 'em...

Well I've actually done quite a bit of fishing in my time. When I was married we used to go out in a small runabout and fish over a reef about 12 miles out. I would get seasick if it was a slow day with not much biting, but it did get pretty exciting at times - we often came back with some really good fish - big snapper and other reef fish. Once there was some action, I would forget all about the seasickness. Been there and done that, and if I still had that t shirt, it would probably be very smelly.

Come to think of it, I've been and done so many things, maybe that explains why I've got so many t shirts, d'ya think?

I had the urge once when I was sitting on a town council to open my buttoned shirt and show the t-shirt I had underneath. It read,

You're right JennyO-that post of yours is about bad romantic relationships.

In your last post you said "The trick is in knowing if they are going to turn bad. Haven't quite mastered that one yet."

-snip-

All of us are still learning...I wish you the best.

Two things that I have learned from my bad romantic relationships are

1. to never forget that I am worthy of love
2. to not 'settle' for a relationship because of fear of being
   out there by myself

****

Does anyone else have any other 'lessons' learned from these types of 'Been There Done That' experiences that he or she would care to share?
