02 May 05 - 12:24 PM (#1476520) Subject: RE: Tech: Virus, or something... From: Peace When your machine gets a cleaning, change your search engine to Mozilla Firefox. It works as well and is also free. It does a good job itself of blocking pop ups. However, I have little more to add. The guys and gals who really know this stuff will be able to give you step-by-step info. |

02 May 05 - 12:30 PM (#1476527) Subject: RE: Tech: Virus, or something... From: GUEST,leeneia Re Technology hates me, and i regard it with suspicion....:) This is just a cop-out, nominalization, to use the technical term. Two people have told you to download spybot and ad-aware. If you don't know how to do that, then you can ask how. Sorry to sound cranky, but asking for help and then dodging the answers is just a Game People Play. |

02 May 05 - 01:02 PM (#1476547) Subject: RE: Tech: Virus, or something... From: Bill D well, I hate to say this, and I don't mean to sound TOO grumpy, butit's gonna be very hard to make suggestions when confronted with terms like "scan thingy" and when you don't know stuff like the NAME of your browser. This technology is here, and it's a big part of our lives. We need to grasp a basic understanding or terms, locations, etc....or actually get someone to come in a set you up as close to a 'safe' setup as possible, and show you...hands on....what buttons to push and whot NOT to do. If you just plug in a computer and go, with no protective devices, it's only a matter of time until something does nasty things to it. It's sad that it has to be that way, but it's just like locking the doors of your car and holding your purse safely.... and as my Daddy used to say, "You ain't gonna learn this any younger" *wry grin*..... do you know ANYONE who can take a look at the system locally and make suggestions? |

02 May 05 - 01:44 PM (#1476585) Subject: RE: Tech: Virus, or something... From: Blissfully Ignorant Well, i have done what you suggested and it seems to be okay now. THankyou! :) "You ain't gonna learn this any younger" ? If i grew any younger, i'd have to start wearing a plunge bra to get into bars again. And when you wear a plunge bra in a bar, you get strange men hitting on you :) |

02 May 05 - 03:00 PM (#1476648) Subject: RE: Tech: Virus, or something... From: Blissfully Ignorant Thanks:) In some of the bars round here, a hairy chest might prove to be quite a turn on. |

02 May 05 - 03:59 PM (#1476697) Subject: RE: Tech: Virus, or something... From: mandoleer Get BHO Demon and WinPatrol as well. They run in the background and keep watch for odd things happening (to put it in a very technical way). And don't pay any money for anti-spyware stuff. Some of the paid-for spyware removers do a very good job of removing other people's spyware and them put their own in. Or on a 'free trial' they find all sorts of stuff that's not there so that you will pay for their software which will successfully 'remove' it. Stick to LavaSoft AdAware, SpyBot Search & Destroy and the other two I've mentioned. Send them a donation if you can, but they don't insist on it. |

From: mack/misophist Odds are you know or related to a burgeoning techie who would be delighted to install Firefox for you and clean up your other problems. If so, remember to have them update java, flash, etc. With luck, they might even be able to explain what they did. |
