03 May 05 - 05:32 AM (#1476862) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Chinkapin Hunting From: GUEST,BanjoRay John, there's often some confusion about Chinquapin Hunting. do you mean the tune that's usually played in A, or do you mean the lovely D tune that we played a few times this weekend at Sewerby - sometimes called Chinquapin? Not many people seem to know about it. I believe it was played by Will Keys among others, using two finger banjo style. Ray |

03 May 05 - 02:52 PM (#1477229) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Chinkapin Hunting From: GUEST,Hootenanny Probably not what you are looking for but Lomax recorded a dance tune called "Old Bobby Halsy" down at Rugby, Va. 1938 I think was the year, during which Estil Ball sings "Chinquapin' Huntin', huntin', huntin'" it's a simple but effective repetetive piece available on one of E C Ball's CDs. 04 May 05 - 11:08 AM (#1477892) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Chinkapin Hunting From: GLoux You can find "the dots" for Chinquapin Hunting in Jeff Todd Titon's Old Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes, University Press of Kentucky. He attributes it to Hiram Stamper who was recorded by Bruce Greene. Hiram's son, Art Stamper, recorded it on County CO-CD-2712, The Lost Fiddler. Titon's book includes a CD with some of the tunes from the book, and Chinquapin Hunting is one of them. -Greg |

05 May 05 - 08:04 AM (#1478660) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Chinkapin Hunting From: GLoux Hmmm...the link that Sorcha gave pointed to the Fiddlers' Companion, which stated that Chinquapin Hunting was in A, by Hiram Stamper, which was recorded by Chad Crumm, of the Chicken Chokers. The fiddle is probably in cross-key A. Art Stamper recorded it in standard tuning in D. When I listen to Will Keys play his version, it sounds like the same tune to me. -Greg |

I think that's the version that Chad Crumm plays with the Chicken Chokers on Young Fogies. Completely different tune. -Greg |
