That will get you to Radio 4's web pages. You can listen online live but you need to have RelPlayer to be able to do so. The programmes are also kept on archive for a week after broadcast, so can be picked up later, but then for some legal reason the archive is removed from public view. If you want to record such webcasts on a Windoze PC, there is a programme called Total Recorder, which hijacks the signal before it reaches your computer sound card and can record Real Audio. You can find Total Recorder HERE . The "standard Edition" is relatively cheap, and does a good job. Quack! Geoff the Duck. |

I think they blew a golden oppurtunity by having more chatter than content. Here are these rare, invaluable archives and your host spends more time asking silly questions instead of letting one hear the sounds. I do hope they become available soon, does anyone have info on that. |

I could have done without so much of it. It was, however, very touching at times. "Long Way to Tipperary" is sung beautifully as is "Comrades Song of Hope" POW Jack Egars(sp)from Hull relating the Story of his capture which was then taken over by his Grandson Jerry was fascinating. I won't spoil the story but I had to giggle when Jack's Grandson tells what happened when Jack and another POW were taken from the Camp to record in Berlin for the Day! I just wish there had been more Singing and speaking from the Prisoners themselves. Fascinating and very Touching non the less. Thank You for providing the Link Keith. Blessings Jude |

Would have been terrific if they played more of the exotic recordings mentioned, like Tatars, Gorkhas and North Africans, to name a few. |

As far as English language folk music content - well, one verse of Where the River Shannon Flows; but some anecdotes of interest to any of us who have ever tried to collect material from source singers. In particular since the POWs found out that the recording musicologists were giving their recordees extra grub and fags they were very keen to be chosen, and inclined to exaggerate what they could do - singing bits of opera and claiming it was folksong, or claiming their Russian songs were actually from Ukraine or Georgia. Also listen to the wonderful recording of the man singing verses of the Quran and tell me if it doesn't sound awfully like an Irish singer performing in Gaelic a folk song which you just can't quite put your finger on. |
