Ted Edwards CD

13 May 05 - 08:13 AM (#1484042)
Subject: Ted Edwards CD
From: GUEST,Mark Dowding (at work)

A long time ago in a land far away (well 1984 in Wigan - about 5 miles from me) I made a recording of Ted Edwards doing a gig at Wigan folk club at the now demolished Park Hotel. A few months ago I dug this cassette tape out of a box and had a listen, put it on a CD and sent it to Ted. Ted asked me if it would be possible to do a run of these for him to sell as he'd never made an LP in his time although he has had a number of his songs recorded by other people - Gary and Vera Aspey in particular - "The Coal and Albert Berry", "Weeping and Wailing Away", "Coal Hole Cavalry" etc.
He also doesn't know of another recording of him at a gig and so this is a unique opportunity to hear Ted doing a full night of his songs.

If anybody wants a copy then let me know and I'll pass your requests on to Ted. I think he's selling them for £5 (plus postage - say £6)

The recording is bright enough and very listenable to although there is obviously slight noise due to the nature of the recording. I have reduced this noise slightly but further reduction causes peculiar effects on the main sound (aliasing I think it's called).

There is an ongoing project to make a CD of Ted's songs being sung by various people but this is at an early stage and I can't give any other details at this time.

Cheers
Mark

I've just spoken to Ted regarding getting hold of a CD and he's agreed to let his address be put on here for people to write for a copy:

Ted Edwards
"The Garret"
6 Westminster Road
Eccles
Manchester
M30 9HF
UK

Please make cheques for £6 payable to "Ted Edwards" and don't forget to include your name and address (some people don't - believe it or not!)

I did 50 for him and he's nearly sold out. I've no doubt some more will be done for him so don't worry about not getting one.

Cheers
Mark

Sorry, that came across a lot more sharp tongued than I intended. It was the astronaut bit that seemed like the bits we sometimes add on the end of threads. I believe Greg Stephens is the Eric Clapton of Stoke, but only in a rough sort of way

I have great admiration for Ted and his songs and other people that sing them.

As far as I am aware Ted was among a number of British men/ women chosen to train as astronauts in order to be the first Britons in space.

Although he underwent some stages of training he was not picked.

Please correct me if this info is not correct - it came from my ex who was a pal of Teds.

Priceless John!

It's bit like that argument in the Woody Allen film. Two characters are in a cinema queue arguing about what Marshall Mclhuan (sorry can't spell that) had said about something or other and to solve the problem MM is spotted in the queue and asked what he actually meant!

Good un

I know what you mean Les, I once had an bet with a friend about the Michael Bentine's "Bumblies" and the Ministry of Defence being interested in using his remote control system for guided weapons. He would have none of it, so Eventually I had wrote to Michael and asked him. He sent me back a wonderful letter back telling me to collect my winnings!'

"come to the Saracen's Head next Wednesday 10th September for 'Songs in the Snug' and ask him yourself!" I'd love to John, but unfortunately I live a "Couple of Hours" drive away in Perth Western Australia.

Thanks for all the info folks

Ted trained at NASA in 1979, but the Columbia disaster put paid to his opportunity for a trip in the space shuttle.

He was granted a trip to MIR in 1989, but (in his words!) was gazumped by the Juno Project in 1991, and that was that.

The walls of his flat are adorned with all his space memorabilia - as JJ pointed out, you can come and ask him yourself on the 2nd or 4th Wednesday of every month in the Saracen's Head, Warburton.

Since his stroke in 1992 he has been somewhat dependant on others to ferry him around, and I'm his regular lift to the Sarries. Ted is such a complex character that I'm sure there are hidden depths that we haven't reached yet!

Ted's a great bloke - used to see him at the Cross Keys & Duke of York in Eccles.
Also remember the TV programme of his trek with a camel across the Sahara.
Met him in a pub once and asked him for the words of Coalhole Cavalry which he very kindly posted to me a few days later - must dig them out and re-learn them.

He really should be cherished and applauded for his contribution to the folk scene. (preferably before his death)

Why isn't he being invited to Fylde or Whitby or similar festivals as someone that the youngsters on the scene can emulate?

I'm not so sure Ted would be up to such a task...

Since his stroke in 1992 he cannot sing as he used to, nor can he play his guitar (some say he never could...!). Speech is difficult, and his right side is completely useless, making walking extremely difficult. Despite that he still lives in his attic flat!

However, he is happy to join in on his own terms with a few local singarounds, and a number of us make sure he gets along to them.

I interviewed him for 'Sounds of Folk' on BBC GMR a few years ago... anyone who'd like a CD copy of that interview should get in touch with me, as I believe in keeping archives!

We decided not to do the interview 'live', so I could edit out the stutters and so on, and people could hear what Ted had to say, not what he was saying...

We're very proud of our Ted round here!
