Hi--I am looking for lyrics/tune of a Catholic hymn with the phrase 'we shall rise up/on eagles' wings'--I don't think it's public domain--if it is copyright, is there a reference citation? Thanks

Hi, Mari-Rose - well, I found a poorly-wrought copy of the lyrics on the Web - Click here. It's a 1979 interpretation of Psalm 91 by Michael Joncas, available from Oregon Catholic Press. Click here to get to where you can order the song. You'll find it in most Catholic hymnals, and the Lutherans and Episcopalians and others use it, too.
Michael Crawford recorded it on an album called On Eagle's Wings, but I can't say I like the album. Nice song, though.

"On Eagle's Wings" is also the name of a musical show celebrating Ulster-Scots history and culture: a sort of unionist "Riverdance".

The is from the Yohann Anderson songbook titled Songs. I don't know what they mean by EmA7 - is a misprint for Em7???

EmA7--likely means Ema7 (or more clearly, E maj 7).

The notes for the chord would be

E,G#,B,D#


If you understand tabs--which I don't--it reads 021100.

I think that it means that, on the word "palm" you play Em and then A7--the way I hear it, two downstrokes on Em then two on A7, holding the note over both chords--

It could be understood that way, that there should be a space between Em and A7; but the word "palm" isn't big enough to accommodate both chords - and I think that Ted is right that the word has two chords. Maybe it should be this way:

      
       Em*A7
      p*a*l*m

        -or-
      
       Em A7
      p a l m

it means an E minor chord with the note A in the bass of the chord. I would play an A octave in the left hand, and an e minor chord in the right, inverted to a B E G

MTed's idea of Em A7, which Joe adopted in his rendering above, is the only reasonable interpretation of what Yohann Anderson could have meant.

Speaking of Emaj7, anonymous guest: a major 7th should be voiced as high as possible. 021100 is only acceptable as a makeshift for beginners, 022444 sounds much better.

I have a copy of this song to hand, straight from the 2006 'Breaking Bread' book. I'm also very familiar with it. It is in the key of D, changes to F for a bit, then goes back to D.

Those chords have been derived from a lush, loungelike accompaniment to this song, written for piano and choir. That's the most likely explanation I have for them. Because for the typical person playing chords on a guitar, they are pretty awful. The first note of the song is a C#. It is discordant against a G chord. Same thing for the second syllable of 'abide.' Where there's Gm above 'whom' the note is an A.

It is true that discord and dissonance can add meaning to a song, but these chords go too far, in my opinion. Even when I was in a choir and our skilled leader was at the grand piano, the first measure of this song always sounded like a train wreck.


I've been playing it here on my little keyboard, and I think that for a lone folkie trying to get folks to sing, the chords need reworking.

Leenia, here is someone who strictly follows Yohann Anderson and strums through heartily. I've heard much worse train wrecks.

I don't know an "original" version, so I cannot judge about that. You are right that the dissonances will disappear if the chords are started with their bass notes alone, e.g. arpeggiated. You are free to try that out, it works on guitars as well as on pianos.
