A Warsaw Ghetto Chronology and Memorial

9/27/1939 - The city of Warsaw surrenders to Germany after 19 days of resistance
11/4/1939 - Ghetto tentatively established but then order was withdrawn
11/15/1940 - Ghetto is officially established, soon holds 360,000 Jews
7/22/1942 - Deportations from ghetto to Treblinka death camp begin
7/28/1942 - Jewish Combat Organization (ZOB) is formed
1/18/1943 - 60,000 Jews remain. They resist transportation, fire on Germans.
The same day, NAZI decision is made to exterminate the ghetto
1/21/1943 - A radio appeal is made to Polish government-in-exile, London,
New York and Washington. The Allies refuse to supply any
Weapons to Jews, even though they were supplied to the Polish
Warsaw resistance. Eventually the Polish resistance supplied
some 59 guns, many of which were defective.
4/19/1943 - 2 am: German army/panzers invade ghetto & actual Battle begins
5/8/1943 - ZOB commander, Mordechai Anielowicz falls in battle
5/16/1943 - The last 75 fighters escape through the sewers & a leveled cemetary
remains. (After resisting 27 days - longer than many countries.)

Dos lid geshriben iz mit blut un nit mit blay,
S'iz nit a lidl fun a foygl oyf der fray.
Dos hot a folk ts'vishn falndikeh vent
Dos lid gezungen mit naganes in di hent!

                This song was written with our blood and not with lead;
It's not a song that summer birds sing overhead,
It was a people among toppling barricades,
That sang this song of ours with pistols and grenades.

                        "Zog Nit Keynmol,"
The "official" song of the Jewish partisans, written in honor of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. It was by the poet-warrior Hirsh Glik, himself a partisan in the Vilna Ghetto at the time. He escaped the ghetto, was caught, then escaped the concentration camp & died in battle in the Baltic woods, fighting Germans. A Treasury of Jewish Folksong, Ruth Rubin; 1950 & Folksinger's Wordbook,   I. Silber

I believe I might have more information on Glik if you want it.

See this thread (click) for a discussion of "Zog Nit Keynmol." A search for Glik will bring up quite a bit of information.
