A Gibson Dove for $35.00 !

I LOVE stories like this. A friend of mine is the lead guitarist for a well respected blues band. His father-in-law got an early preview of an estate sale that was going to take place across the street and told my friend that there was a Gibson acoustic guitar of "some sort" that had a $35.00 price tag on it. He decided to check it out.

He was first in line the next morning and was able to pick up a possible 1963 sunburst Gibson Dove for only 35.00. The only problem with it was that someone had taken steel wool to the back of it to take some of the finish off and had stopped part way through the job. Otherwise it's structurally sound. It will still make a nice studio guitar for this guy. And he can afford to invest a little to fix it up considering that he only spent 35.00 on it.

It gives me hope that I might still find a nice old Gibson mandolin in a garage sale someday. These thing do still happen.

Keep hope alive.

May I hope that your honest friend told the beneficiaries of the estate of the true value of the guitar and offered a handsome overage to them?

The guy who owned the guitar's dead. His heirs were too lazy to run the thing by a music store and ask what it was worth before putting a price tag on it. They don't deserve more than $35.00 for it.

What a stupid thing to do that'd be!

The guitar had no strings on it at the time he bought it - so he really had no idea if the guitar was any good or not. It turned out it was. There was someone 5 feet behind him trying to grab it too.

By the way - they also had a Hondo acoustic guitar priced at $95.00.

What's a Hondo? Worth $95?

The Hondo might have been $95 new about fifteen years ago. Basically a piece of junk.

Who the f*** set the prices? Had they not heard about auctions? Jesus H Christ. One hopes there isn't a cash-strapped widow involved...

"What's a Hondo?"

It's a cross between a Honda and Rambo. The sound travels at a good clip but it will cause you severe pain.

gee, & I was happy when I got a baritone ukelele for $5. I can't imagine that kind of "wowie!" factor.

A long long time ago I was in the fortunate position to find a Lachenal concertina in good condition for £25 !! As I was driving to collect I was wondering wether I would sell it on , and if so , how much of the profit I would pass on to the vendor . When I arrived at the address the private road , double garage and seven series BMW on the drive put all such thoughts from my mind .

I got my 12-string like this (but not nearly so good of a deal). I stopped at a garage sale, and saw what looked like a photo of a Martin 12-string in the back, along with some other photos. I asked what the pictures were, and the guy running the sale said they were items from another sale that he hadn't brought that day. I asked about the guitar, and he said he didn't know anything about it, but it was priced at $75. I told him I was interested, and he brought the guitar for me the next day. It turned out to be a '60s Takamine (lawsuit guitar), but for $75 I couldn't have been happier.

That guitar is still has the sweetest action and is the richest sounding guitar I own, including my "real" Martin.
