18 May 05 - 08:58 AM (#1487199) Subject: RE: May Shanty Session at the Press Room (NH From: GUEST,Charley Noble Looks like at least 3 members of Roll & Go are coming down. Anyone who wants to van pool can meet us on or about 2 pm at 40 Salem Street on Portland's West End. We'll have a bite to eat after the Shanty Sing and be back to Portland by about 9 pm. I understand that Al and Barb are planning to come up from NY, and may shanghai some friends to join them. They are mainstays of the South Street Seaport Chantey Sings. I believe Rich Gattoand his pals from Kennebunk are planning to attend as well. Could be crowded. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

19 May 05 - 08:03 AM (#1487985) Subject: RE: May Shanty Session at the Press Room (NH From: Bat Goddess Sounds like it should be quite a turnout -- Edmund (CET) from Ottawa is planning to be there -- and for the regular Friday evening session the night before. I haven't had time to learn anything new -- maybe I'll just be able to remember the "old" ones. (Note to Al & Barb -- that means I haven't yet learned the Fish Chowder song, which I have fully intended to do since I heard you sing it at the Portsmouth Maritime Festival last September.) Linn |

19 May 05 - 05:32 PM (#1488501) Subject: RE: May Shanty Session at the Press Room (NH From: Jeri If it's 'Good Fish Chowder' ("Jerry Mulligan came to see me. Dropped his cap in the chowder pot...") it's in the DT. I have different words though, and it's a version with 6 verses versus the DT's 4 verse version, even though both this and the DT's come from the singing of Joe Hickerson. Which probably isn't unusual - just that there are more chorus opportunities with 6 verses. I don't know what tune the DT has, but the tune named for it here is the 'Winnipeg Whore'. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be there. I don't have any diseases and my voice works and I'll be looking for reasons why I can't try to fix my lawnmower. |

22 May 05 - 11:16 AM (#1490581) Subject: RE: May Shanty Session at the Press Room (NH From: GUEST,Charley Noble One of the best shanty sessions I've attended. Oddly most of us this time were from out of state, six from neighboring Maine, two from Long Island, NY, and one from Ottawa, Canada, only 5 from NH, not including Dave who was there for 5 minutes but made good use of his time by purchasing one of my CD's. Nor led a series of Cyril Tawney related songs "Chicken on a Raft," "Gosport Nancy" along with a couple of fragments that he collected and published in his songbook Gray Funnel Line. Jacqui led "Gray Funnel Line" itself. Tom Hall began things with "Paddy West," continuing with "Shoals of Herring," "Haul Away Me Rosie-O" and two others. Rich Gatto from Kennebunk led a traditional whaling song he had recently collected in the West Indies. Al Cuenin led "Randy Dandy-O," a New Zealand sealing song, and a rousing version of "Wavertree" in which an old sailor describes his experience after joining ship on the west coast of South America. Al's wife Barbara led at least two fisherman shipwreck songs whose titles have escaped my foggy memory. Jeri led "Ten Stone," "Fire Down Below," "Deep the Water, Shallow the Shore" among others. Edmund led "Yangtse River Shanty," "Sally Free & Easy," "Haul Away Joe" and several others. Bruce was there and I'm totally blanking on the two songs he beautifully led. Jacqui also led a wicked parody of "Lady Franklin's Lament" among other songs. Sinsull treated us to "It's All Part of Being a Pirate." Linn will have to fill in what she sang; foggy brain strikes again. JudyB led "Roll the Old Chariot," "The Bunyip Song" by Australia's John Warner, and "Keep on Fishing" by the illustrious Jon Campbell. Jane arrived late but added at least two shanties, "Black Bird Get Up" is the only one that surfaces in my mind. I led "West Indies Blues," "Captain Bailey's Mistake," "The Old Fiddle" by C. Fox Smith, "Fire Maringo" and "Outward Bound" by C. Fox Smith. I'm pleased with how my new musical arrangement of "The Old Fiddle" is working and it will be interesting to hear how it sounds when there are supporting vocals and a fiddle accompaniment to the banjo. I'm unfortunately going to miss the June gathering at the Press Room but I hope to sing with many of these folks at the Mystic Sea Music Festival after concert gathering the 2nd weekend of June. Additions and corrections are welcome! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

22 May 05 - 01:18 PM (#1490620) Subject: RE: May Shanty Session at the Press Room (NH From: Bat Goddess I think yesterday's session was a first for a regular Third Saturday session -- three states and three countries represented. I know we've done three states before (reasonably often, actually) -- but it may be a first for the three countries and almost definitely for three states and three countries together. (In case you're wondering -- Edmund, of course, is from Canada, and Jacqui still counts as a Brit as well as a Mainiac, I mean, Mainer.) What DID I sing?!? "Bay of Biscay" in which I added a new coughing verse, followed by a quick gulp of porter before another verse with actual words in it. (Jeri backing me up with harmony except on the coughing verse.) "Harbors of Home" written by Joan Sprung. (See, Joan, I've been getting some mileage out of it -- I really like that song and so does everyone who hears it.) Oh, and then I was forced to sing an occupational song -- "Down Below" -- because a) it tied in with a theme raised by Al or Barbara, can't remember which, b) it's more or less about water and does have one actual nautical verse, and c) it leads up to a pun even worse than Charlie's chorus for "Dead Dog Cider." Then I "bruced" (local term for using a cheat sheet) "On the Backside of Nantucket Point" which I don't think I've sung in public since the first Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival in, when?, 2000? And I closed the session with Jerry Bryant's "It's Only a Shantey In Old Shanteytown." We've had some exceptional sessions lately, and yesterday's was definitely one of them. Oh, and Charlie -- it's JEAN (Jennings), not Jane. Linn |

22 May 05 - 01:33 PM (#1490636) Subject: RE: May Shanty Session at the Press Room (NH From: Charley Noble Thanks, Linn, for the additional notes. I do remember you singing "Down Below," after Al and Barb were discussing outhouses. And I'd forgotten what inspired "Dead Dog Cider" or even that I had led it. The demise of the boat launching "On the Backside of Nantucket" is certainly a classic. I'd also like to hear "Harbors of Home" again. Where the Hell was I when you sang that? One of Bruce's songs was Gordon Bok's "Bells of Cape St. Mary." Edmund also led "John Cherokee." Oh, and Barbara led "Good Fish Chowder." JEAN! Right! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Still trying to figure out what a bunyip is. I also did Shipping News' version of "Fisherman's Wife" and promised Barb the lyrics. Makes me wonder why I ever miss one of these. And didn't Edmund fill the room with his booming voice? WOW! Of course I never got "Maggie May". HARUMPH! SINS |

23 May 05 - 10:27 AM (#1491269) Subject: RE: May Shanty Session From: Uncle Jaque Missed another one, begads! Couldn't have gone anyway, it seems; a Friend from Westbrook with whom I do a little radio gig on Sat. Mornings found on Friday Morning that his 18-year old Daughter had quite unexpectedly passed away in her sleep sometime on Thursday night. She was to graduate from HS in 2 weeks and had been accepted at UNH. Needless to say, we couldn't do our show, and the chap who normally does the monday thru friday news program covered for us. But Kevin had arranged for us to do a presentation and debate to a HS Class at Bucksfield High after the show, and he asked me to cover for him - which I of course did. Then we went over to visit our Daughter and Son-in-Law over in Winthrop. Something like what happened to Kevin and Sandy sure reminds us to appreciate things and people that we might all too often take for granted. Hopefully, we'll get something going a little closer to the Portland / Brunswick area - that get together at Sinsull's a while back was great. And for me anyway, long overdue! |
