21 May 05 - 02:29 AM (#1489825) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: Hamish Actually, I quite like both. But Raunds was a fine crack last year. And a gig's a gig! |

21 May 05 - 06:35 PM (#1490279) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: shepherdlass Come on, folks - Eurovision was (thanks to the genius that is T Wogan) as excruciatingly funny and camp as ever. Sometimes kitsch wins over quality just for a couple of hours. |

21 May 05 - 08:57 PM (#1490363) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: McGrath of Harlow Wouldn't miss Eurovision. Take that either way. I was disappointed to see that the UK entry given a handful of votes. "Nul points" would have been far more appropriate. And, as happens surprisingly often, the song that came second was actually quite good. Malta's entry, that was; and it was good seeing the traditionally built lady who wrote it singing it. (You can have a squint at and a listen to all the songs if you click on through from here. "All" rather assumes you're a glutton for puniushment - My God, there were some dreadful ones though, some of them almost as bad as the UK entry. But that's where the fun lies. And there are always a few... |
22 May 05 - 07:25 PM (#1490820) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: McGrath of Harlow For example the Ukrainian entry, straight from the street demonstrations that brought down the government, with words in Ukrainian, English, Polish, German, Spanish, Czech, French & Russian. Here they are just in English. (And that link I gave clicks through to the video, complete with a short film clip of the young Che Guevara; the whole thing providing an example of how rap can be used in other ways than it often is): Together we are many, we can't be defeated Together we are many, we can't be defeated Together we are many, we can't be defeated Together we are many, we can't be defeated We won't stand this (No), revolution is on 'Cause lies be the weapon of mass destruction All together we're one, all together we're strong God be my witness, we've waited too long Falsifications (No), machinations (No) Little understandings (No), no to lies We trust (Yes), we can (Yes) I know we will win (Yes, yes) Together we are many, we can't be defeated Together we are many, we can't be defeated Together we are many, we can't be defeated Together we are many, we can't be defeated What you wanna say to your daughters and sons You know the battle is not over till the battle is won Truth be the weapon, we ain't scared of the guns We stay undefeated, 'cause together we're one We - already together, we - forever We - Ukrainians, sons and daughters It's now or never, enough of waiting Together we are many, we can't be defeated Together we are many, (Together we are many), We can't be defeated (We can't be defeated) Together we are many, (Together we are many), We can't be defeated (We can't be defeated) Together we are many (If we are together) We can't be defeated (We are invincible) Together we are many (Our strength lies in our unity) We can't be defeated (Our strength lies in our unity) Together we are many (The united people) We can't be defeated (Will never be defeated) Together we are many (Together we are many, we can't be defeated) Together we are many (Together) We can't be defeated (We can't be defeated) Together we are many (Together) We can't be defeated (Together we are many) Together we are many (Together) We can't be defeated (We can't be defeated) Together we are many (Together) We can't be defeated (Together we are many) Together we are many (Together) We can't be defeated. |
23 May 05 - 06:28 AM (#1491130) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: Hamish And then again there were more than a few politically charged songs at Raunds on Saturday. Sure, some of them related to the injustices of a century or so back, but nonetheless... Thanks for the link, McGrath: we played quite a few of my families requests - they'd watched the show - and one or two were okay. Ish. None to match that spine-tinglingly marvellous song from Bosnia Herzogovinia a couple of years back. That was suitably rootsey, but I'm afraid their entry this year seemed to have gone for the EuroVisionFormulaCumParody angle. |
23 May 05 - 06:42 AM (#1491137) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: John MacKenzie Well I missed Raunds, the footie, and the Eurovision Song farce. I knew there had to be other advantages to living up here in the wilds of the Scottish highlands. Mind you I also missed the Yorkshire gathering so it's not all good news. Giok |
23 May 05 - 06:44 AM (#1491138) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: HipflaskAndy El Greco, you must be cock-a-hoop just now. Greece won the Euro Footy recently and now the Euro vision. Quick George, pop out and get a lotto ticket! You're on a roll. Cheers! - HFA |
23 May 05 - 06:48 AM (#1491141) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: Lanfranc Missed the programme on Saturday, apart from the last few minutes of the voting. I wonder if Eurovision would survive if France, Germany, Spain and the UK withdrew in a huff after coming in the last four positions? If everyone hates us (and the septics) so much, why were so many songs sung in English. Bunch of hypocrites if you ask me. Contemplating moving to Malta, where, it would seem, you can be a singer without being anorexic. A much better song than the winner, I'd have voted for Malta, myself. Alan |
23 May 05 - 09:10 AM (#1491222) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: John MacKenzie You obviously think you'd fit in if you went to Malta Alan! Giok ¦¬] |
23 May 05 - 09:43 AM (#1491247) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: Dave Bryant I never bother about listening to the songs, but Wogan's comments during the voting are priceless. Isn't there a country that won't give him a visa after his remarks one year ? |
23 May 05 - 06:37 PM (#1491625) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: mandoleer In the days when I watched TV occasionally, I used to like the Norwegian entries. They had more character. Missed the FA Cup - didn't even know it was on until someone told me on Saturday, and then got everyone confused when I thought it was in London. At the AGM for the Dandy Owners Club, I was. And if you don't know what a Dandy is (there are at least two other Catters who have them), click here and follow Pictures, Rallies 2004, Pembridge and you'll see mine nearest the water. (And a small cousin at the left of the other pic!) |
23 May 05 - 06:51 PM (#1491632) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: LesB I missed the lot. Great planning. I was at the Green Dragon, Hardraw in Wensleydale at a Sword Dancing weekend. Dancing round 6 pubs in the day and in the evening drinking, singing & playing in the Green Dragon with the cream of Sword and Rapper sides. No news, no tele, no phone signal, ah bliss. Cheers Les |
23 May 05 - 07:04 PM (#1491639) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: mandoleer Les, can I interest you in the Dandy Owners Club? |
23 May 05 - 07:10 PM (#1491644) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: LesB Probably not Phil, I use my Dandy as a means to an end. Cheers Les |
24 May 05 - 07:53 AM (#1491833) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: George Papavgeris My own strategy included going to see a play (brill- "tHE cONDITION oF tHE vIRGIN", yes, with the caps this way round). Came back to find the voting finishing and Greece tops. Listened to the song - crap! Very gratified that for yet one more year I find the winning song to be rubbish; it confirms my good taste in music for me. Dunc, I wonder where the third "first" will come from...Greece had one in sports, one in arts (using the word very loosely); politics next perhaps? Greece as the peacemaker in the Middle East? Or in science - the first country to square the circle or abolish world hunger? |
24 May 05 - 08:57 AM (#1491883) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: HipflaskAndy The 'third' I mentioned already George 'Quick George, pop out and get a lotto ticket! You're on a roll.' I'll want a share tho' - you wouldn't have opened a Eurovision thread wi'out my PM prompt! So outa the big win you're obviously due, I'll settle for the price of a second hand camper van - and head for Greece! Naturally! Byeee - HFA |
24 May 05 - 01:23 PM (#1492079) Subject: RE: FA Cup / Eurovision avoidance strategy From: Bunnahabhain Terry Wogan on form alone makes it worth watching. And it provides a useful, annual booster shot against many, many forms of aweful music. Unfortunatly, I missed it being at our summer dance. Plus, being in a University based group, we have members from a fair number of the counties involved, and a few innocents, for want of a better word. People who've come to study from the US, Oz, etc and have never been exposed to Eurovision before, and all of a sudden, a seemingly normal (ok, a group of folk dancers) people subject themselves to that of their own free will, and with only alcohol as an anesthetic.
