Roscommon Singers CD (1998)

16 Dec 98 - 05:26 PM (#49812)
Subject: South Roscommon - Congrats.
From: Frank McGrath

Martin Ryan is a very regular contributor to the Mudcat threads but he is too modest to blow his own trumpet.

Martin and his friends in the South Roscommon Singers Circle have launched a new and excellent cd called "What will we do?".

It features many of their members and is a must for anyone interested in traditional unaccompanied singing.

Possibly Martin might leave his humility for a little while and tell us more about it - like how to get hold of a copy.

Congratulations to the South Roscommon Singers Circle.
Well done and every success to you.

Frank! You chancer! It's not often I'm accused of humility.

The CD is indeed launched - with the help of Jimmy Murray, in whose pub the circle started a few years ago. Jimmy won an All-Ireland with Roscommon in 1943 and 1944 (the Irish among you will know how cosmic an event that was). He is also a fine singer - still, at the age of 81. As I said to him: "if I can keep my teeth in at your age , never mind sing - I'll be happy!"

I'll look into the cost of postage but I'm unlikely to refuse $20 or therabouts in reasonably negotiable form (Saorry guys - CD's are expensive on this side of the water. SOmething to do with the damp). We'll probably end up marketing it via John Moulden's Ulstersongs also. For that matter - Max - are you interested in holding a few?

I'll post a list when I get a chance to type 'em up off line. Twenty tracks with a fair proportion of local songs, from singers ranging from teenagers to advanced seniors!

Martin, Are there no advanced teenagers in Roscommon? Only advanced seniors!
And in which category would you place yourself? Wouldn't you be a very advanced teenager now?

Anyway - get on your bike and post the track listing quick so I can find a few new songs to murder. The few I have are well and truely hacked to bits.

Martin Congratulations on the CD and the South Roscommon singers circle I have some Roscommon blood in me so there could be a good chance I'll be in Roscommon for the new year, So if you're near Rockfords and hear a young drunk Dub singing Kevin Barry that'll be me. Or if you're near Goldens in Castlecoote / Fuerty and you hear someone crucifying the rare aul times (God loves a trier) that'll be me.

Just a short addition to Frank’s comments.

Mike Scanlan and I were in Knockroghery for the launching of this fine CD.

The singing talent was unbelievable. I tried to count the singers at one stage but lost count after 35 and there was still a lot to go.

Frank Harte was also there and in fine voice.

The CD is magnificent and, apart from their two guest tracks from "Baby Sham", it is typical of a night at one of their sessions.

It is nearly as good as ours (Nenagh Singers Circle) which is also available via Frank or myself at the same price of $20.00, and which was launched about 18 months ago. John Moulden is also carrying our CD as is Living Tradition.

Hi Martin!

Is that "What will we do when we have no money?"

And what's the low-down on "Ten Young Women and 1 Young Man?" Sounds like my idea of a "perfect summer camp" as seen on another current thread.

See you in Ballyliffin. Maybe I can bring something to barter.

All the best,
Dan

Frank, Martin

What's the style involved (is it sean nos or is it just get up and sing for Ireland ??)

Gearoid

P.S Frank I saw the website (very good) the question is can Roscommon equal that !!!

17 Dec 98 - 10:48 AM (#49910)
Subject: RE: Roscommon
From: Martin Ryan.

Dan

Yes to the first question!

"10 young women and one young man" is, I'm afraid, no adolescent fantasy. It's a song Ewan McColl wrote at the time of a strike in the early eighties involving workers in a supermarket which was selling South African goods. I've always called it "The Girls of Dublin City", just to confuse the issue, but Peggy Seeger tells me "10 young women..." was the original title. It had never been recorded, as far as she knew. Given the nature of coincidence, I was not too surprised when, less than a fortnight before our launch, it appeared on a CD of Irish Labour Songs released by one our trade unions! I thought I had sent it ot Dick for the DT - but apparently not.

Gearoid
More sean-nos (in English) than Dublin City Ramblers, certainly!

I think I be a mixture of the Dubliners, The Wolfe Tones and The Dublin City Ramblers.

I think I'll have to start my own Band (I'd call it the Clancy's or Plankty or something original like that !!!!!)

Just to mention something total different

Have you noticed that young people are once again taking an interest in Ballads and trad ????

I'm only a gosoon myself and most of my friends enjoy a good session.?? Same goes for my younger brothers friends ?????

funny eh ???????

Thank you so much for posting this information! Please give details for those of us outside of Ireland regarding the type of payment, currency, mailing address to send payment... do you have a way to take VISA or MasterCard charges as payment? Thanks!! And Frank, I am in the process of setting up a song circle here, with a fiddler and Celtic music promoter by the name of Tom Robison. He has started a company to promote Cletic music in our region, called Fiddlehill Music, and has released his first CD called "Many Hats". He does not yet have a computer to access the internet, but I am encouraging him to join in on the Mudcat. I will be singing at a Christamas singalong and session with him this weekend, and I hope to begin organizing a singers circle based on whatever interest is expressed at this singalong on the 19th. Frank and Martin, I would like to buy a CD of each of your recordings of your singers.

Hi Martin!

Not wanting to steal any heat from the Roscommon Singers' fire, I thought I'd lay these verses on you...

What would we do if we married a farmer?
All true lovers, what would we do then?
We would milk his best cow and laugh while he ploughs
And we'll yodel it all over again.

What would we do if we married a fiddler?
All true...
We would dance to his jigs and play up to his rigs
And we'll...

Check out http://www.folklegacy.com/cd/cd124.htm. It sings.

Fraternally yours, Dan

Alice,
It's lovely to hear from you. May I wish you every success with your singers circle/club. I hope it brings you as much joy as I have been lucky enough to experience since I hooked up with the Nenagh Circle.

Thank you for expressing a desire to aquire the recording of our repitoire. Even though George and I feature on same it's really quite good. But I am being far too flippant and negating the sincerity of my opening lines. So, let me repeat the line I wrote a week or so ago.

To Alice and Big Mick (J. Offer, Art, Brack and all the others)
Thank you for still being here and active in the threads when I returned to the Mudcat after many long months.

John Moulden ("Ulstersongs") will be taking on the Roscommon CD over the next few weeks. He's set up to handle credit cards etc. and can be contacted via the Mudcat links page.

I had a Christmas card from Peggy Seeger to whom I had sent a copy, since it includes one of Ewan McColls previously unredorded songs (see earlier in this thread!). Fortunately, she enjoyed my attempt at it!

p.s. I'll confirm when John has stock available.

The catalogues you will find at the link which Martin Ryan quotes above are in need of revision and "What will we do" is not listed - but - I do have a couple and can always get more and I do accept credit cards - terms are given at http://members.aol.com/jmoul81075/form.htm

The Mudcat Cafe and I are in course of negotating terms for them to link any item in my catalogue to any reference to it - song or book or album - in a thread.

This episode can serve as a dry run.

I'd like to add my congratulations to the others - there is some fine singing on the cd and very good songs - besides a degree of erudition in the liner notes (Martin Ryan again).

I got my copy of that CD recently. I like a lot that style of singing. Mostly a single unaccompanied voice and a very good collection of songs. How you get together such a collection of good voices in a small area is a secret of Ireland. If that's really "typical of a night at one of their sessions" I can only envy you.
Go on and buy that CD unless you hate listening to a capella singing for more than one track.

Wolfgang

Thank you for the kind words! As to whether its typical of our sessions... Well, you mightn't find all of the singers there on any one night - but there'd always be someone else there just as good!
The real reason the circle works is the work put in by one man (Declan Coyne, who also produced the CD) in organising and encouraging everyone - with some help form myself and others.

Declan, by the way, is currently doing a computer course for the first time in his life ..... so I might be able to lure him on line soon!

Hard to believe! - I dropped on this thread while searching for something completely different (as you do!) - I was in Roscommon at about that time (late 90s), stayed in Athlone and went up to Knockroghery - looked for my father's family home at Gailey Bay (our current Irish terrier is called Gailey) and had a drink in Jimmy Murray's bar where the man himself was still there (looking freakily like my Dad who was born in 1907). We were looking for somewhere to find some music, but no-one mentioned the Roscommon Singers either in Athlone or Knockroghery - pity about that!
