22 May 05 - 11:01 PM (#1490946) Subject: Auction Update From: SINSULL Kendall has placed a copy of Beginner's Luck (cassette) up for auction. I wore my first one out and bought a second and can recommend it without reservation. Of course, I am a Kendall groupie and am slightly prejudiced. Bid high and bid often! SINS |

24 May 05 - 08:21 AM (#1491861) Subject: RE: Auction Update From: kendall This tape/CD has been reviewed extensivly over the past 5 years by many different Mudcatters. None have been returned for a refund. However, for those who haven't heard, here is some info: BEGINNER'S LUCK RECORDED IN 1995 Kendall Morse, lead singer and guitar. Tom Rowe of Schooner Fare harmony and bass. Evans Fitch Dobro Don Campbell banjo Greg Boardman viola Chuck Romanoff of Schooner Fare, harmony I can't quote technical details except to say it was recorded by Tom Rowe and reproduced by Klarity Kassettes of Auburn Maine. I find no fault with the product except the mistakes I made. Since this recording was made, Tom Rowe and Evans Fitch have passed on. If anyone who has this recording would care to comment on it, be my guest. |

24 May 05 - 08:42 AM (#1491876) Subject: RE: Auction Update From: jacqui.c OK - I'm biased but I would say that this is the best work that Kendall has produced and, having listened to other singer's versions of the songs, he can stand up to comparison without any problem. Added to that the second half of the tape is a collection of his Maine stories, which are well worth listening to both for the content and his delivery. That makes this tape quite unique. The tracks are:- SONGS The Three Legged Man The Haying Song Gently Down The Stream Of Time Mrs Ravoon Phoebe Snow (one of my favourites) Palace Grand Ashes On The Sea (Utah Phillips chose Kendall's recording of this song to put on his latest cd - Songbook) The Band Played Waltzing Matilda (Eric Bogle told Kendall that he had done this song in exactly the way he had meant it to be sung, unlike some other recordings) Rolling Home The spoken tracks are:- The Big Family Uriah Boardman - The Seagull Uriah Boardman - The Pullman Car Uriah Boardman - The Flower Show The Dunbar Sisters - Two Old Maids The Dunbar Sisters - Effie's Privy Clyde and Maude Go Flying Orrin Seavey's Accident Beginner's Luck |

24 May 05 - 10:23 AM (#1491953) Subject: RE: Auction Update From: SINSULL Up to $15 for a cassette that won't last five years if you play it every day and rewind it constantly to re-hear your favorites. Some people never learn. By the way, as if this needs repeating, "Phoebe Snow" is my favorite track. As to the humorous stories - my Dad kept a copy of this in his hospital room and at home to help him laugh thru the rough spots. I will always be grateful to Kendall for making Dad's last year easier, in fact for making him laugh out loud. I keep my copy in the car and Dad's in my house - I do re-play this one a lot. Kendall at his best. SINS, back to her old, nasty self. |

24 May 05 - 11:03 AM (#1491981) Subject: RE: Auction Update From: SINSULL Oh, I don't know, Leo. I remember a night when Kendall began singing "Palace Grand" to a dewy eyed Max who sat in worship at his feet wearing his hero's hat. Seems to me the Captain lost it and never quite got it back 'til the next day. Couldn't even keep control of "Irene, Goodnight". |
