Old friend, Scott Alarik, has, in the new issue of the ever superb SING OUT! magazine, written one of the best crafted articles I've ever read on the sixty year long dynamic inherently in the performing style of Pete Seeger. Pete is the man who showed so many of us (whether we admit it or not)--, by his grand personal example over those many years, what it means to be what we have come to call a folksinger. Personally, Pete was my model, and my mentor-from-afar --- through the speakers of my sound system.

I thank Pete heartily for all he and his music has meant to me. And I thank Scott Alarik for this insightful look at the man from this angle that rings so remarkably true to this folksinger's ears.

This issue of Sing Out! is Volume 49 Number 2. All of the songs in this particular issue are exceptional---and the CD of the songs that comes with my subscription is one I will listen to over and over again.

Mark Moss (the fine editor) has topped himself one more time.

Hiya Art, I too owe much to Pete, and I look forwaed to reading the article when my copy of SO arrives. However, I do hope that Mark Moss has not "topped himself". In English slang this means he has committed suicide. Burl.

Roy,

Sorry about that. These semantic problems are enough to make one antisemantic. Here in the U.S., in the old days of the lumbercamps and jacks, the guys hired to cut the top several feet of a tall pine, before the rest of the tree was cut down, those fellows were the toppers. And no, Mark is just fine!

Hello to Elaine!

My copy of Sing Out! arrived this morning, minus CD, and I have read the article twice through. It is a fine piece, full of insight and wisdom. I join with Art in recommending it to all.
Peggy Seeger, along with brother Mike, some of her and Ewan MacColl's children, and PETE SEEGER, plus Martin Carthy & Norma Waterson are in concert this weekend in London. It sounds like a great concert. Mrs Burl and I can't go because of a prior engagement to see our grandson play a cowhand in a local production of Oklahoma!. We're hoping the BBC will record it for later broadcast.

Art, glad to hear Mark Moss is OK. Who was it said of our countries that they were 'Divided by a common language'.
