Florida....lots of great talent went through there in the 60's........and I wonder about a bunch of people.....There was a thread on aol under "Baby boomers".....Someone asked about Fred Neil.....There never was an answer....I am still wondering.....

I'd be happy if someone out there has ever met, sung with, or known a fellow about my age (70) who played guitar and sang informally in Seattle about 48 years ago. His name was Warren Povey. He graduated from Dartmouth, then came to Seattle to study playwriting at the U. of Washington. We swapped a lot of songs back then in the inexpensive student apartments near the campus, although I was never a student. (I snuck in as a reader for blind students.) If you know him, please let me know how to get in touch with him. I owe him (among many others) for a good life in folk music. I'd like to say "thanks."

Sandy

I still wonder what happened to Paul McNeill from Great Britain, Bruce Murdock from Canada, Hamish Imlack from Great Britain, and about fifty or sixty other's who I've heard over the years who helped to shape my love of folkmusic. Also I'll take this opportunity to thank Sandy Paton and Art Thieme, The Golden Voice of the Dells and parts of the Upper Penninsula for being so good at what they do.

What ever happened to Caesar Pacifici? Caesar is a whiz guitarist and can play in any style. He was in The Flying Cloud with Kathleen Collins, Tony DeMarco, Brian Brooks and myself back in the mid to late '70s. When I last heard from him, he was making more money at calligraphy than music, which is unfathomable given the way he could play. I understand he went to Portland, OR. Any Caesar sightings, anyone? Thanks.

Gosh, folks, I'm starting to wonder if Portland, OR is the Bermuda triangle of folksingers....I asked around, and so far, I have learned that Michael Greiner left here a number of years back to stay with his mother in Orchard Park, Washington state.
Will let you know if anyone has heard of the other folk.
Blessings,
Barbara

G'day,
Whatever happened to Johnny????

Although I hardly knew him, I heard that the enemy nearly slew him.

There was also a rumour that he played with a band called The Hurricanes about 40 years ago, well known in the Red River Valley.

Lost sight of him since, but I'm sure we'll all be gay when Johnny comes marching home.

Sorry (maybe),
Alan

How about Mark Spoelstra? He played in Connecticut in the 60's. Last I knew he was working in the Watts area in L.A. as a conscienious objector during Vietnam. I know he wrote a couple of songs about his experiences in Watts.

Dear Allan in Australia,

If it were indeed the "Johnny you hardly knew".....Then I am sorry to say....he did not come marching home...As you see..... He was missing an arm and a leg.....

And as to whether or not they will "all be gay"....I am not sure....but I have been informed that he "looked so queer"......I have no inclination as to the implication that was intended.....

there was a girl named 'Ellen' who left Chicago about 1962 the head for New Mexico, I believe...she stopped in Wichita, Kansas for awhile and taught us a number of songs, including a very sad old gospel song called "Bring My Savior to me".....I've always wondered...

also in Kansas in the '60s was Roland Appleton..had one bad eye and played frailed banjo and raised Siberian huskies...he knew half of more songs than anyone I ever heard...

smae place. same general era...Gene Vermillion..short..red hair, round faced..played 12-string and blues...

none of the folks seem to have become well known, but the power of the WWW being what it is....*shrug*

Does anyone know whatever became of a Canadian folk duo, Fraser and DeBolt? I heard one of their albums in the late seventies. Beautiful stuff. I've seen "Daisy DeBolt" in the Dirty Linen tour schedules, and her gigs were in Canada...could this be the same woman? Fraser and DeBolt were a man and woman...

Not exactly folk, but he used to play in the same upstate New York circuit in the early 70's -- Whatever became of LEW LONDON ? Originaly he was with a bluegrass band called Bottle Hill, playing awesome guitar, mandolin, and dobro; later he teamed up with a bass player and played light swing on an f-hole guitar.

Doc Stanley who was in Chicago in the early 60's. Did a dynamite fingerpicked version of "Deep Elem Blues" on his old regularly fretted and low strung Dobro? Doc, last I heard you were incarcerated...

Fred Geis--last heard that you were rooming with Richard Harding, the 60s % 70's owner of Poor Richard's in Chicago. Fred was originally from Sacramento. Wrote "Goin' Home" (made a hit by Kinston Trio--was #1 for a week before it was noticed that the tune was taken from an aria in Gounod's FAUST. Also wrote "Lament For Brendan Behan" that was recorded by the Clancy's & Tommy Makem---and many others.

Fred Neil---in Florida---great voice.

Ron Buffington--in Chicago in the mid & early 60's. Was first guitar player for Bonny Koloc there.

Tom Meisenheimer---played banjo in Chicago in 60s.

Roger Luzwick---artist (painter) and guitar picker in Chicago in early 60s.

Mark Dorinson---At the University of Chicago in the early 60s---picked grand guitar.

Mike Slosson---in Chicago with Roger & Tom. Hung at the Erectheon coffeehouse on Sedgwick St. in Old Town.

Lorraine Blue---owner of MOOTHER BLUES--an early folk club where George Carlin & Bill Cosby opened for folksingers in the mid 60s.

Sarah Stewart a waitress at the No Exit (Chicago) in the 60s---from Spooner, Wisconsin originally. We shared the same Birthday...

...and so many waitresses ALL OVER---Where are ya now? Especially that great gal who was a waitress at THE FICKLE PICKLE COFFEEHOUSE in Chi. on Rush Street who said, one sad day, "Boy, would I like to ball a Beatle!" I knew, then, that particular incarnation of the folk scene was OVER. After that, it seemed the drummers got all the dates. The drummers even infiltrated the Grand Ole Opry after that!

Daisy DeBolt was indeed half of Fraser and DeBolt. She has been performing with her own band for quite a few years now. The voice is still recognizable, but her own style is very different--kind of feminist accordion-totin bohemian earth-mother thing. As F& D were, she' a definite one-of-a-kind artist.

Allan Fraser is heard from much less at least in Ontario. But he was in Ottawa a couple of years ago and I heard a live radio show that he did with his current spouse (of 15 years) and musical partner. Together they sound eerily like the old Fraser and DeBolt, and unlike Daisy they still do that old material. I think they also still live in the Eastern Townships of Quebec...

I'd love to know about Leo, too. We were conscientious objectors working at the Methodist Children's Home Society when we got to be good friends for a while -- I got swept away and we just lost touch. I want to say he and Rich had a band Society's Child? Is that right? He was a truly fine man...
