BS: Gluon! Off my leg, dammit! (non-bawdy)

A new baryon, which has been named Θ+, is being hailed as the first manifestly exotic hadron. Its charge is +1, and its mass, about 1540 MeV, roughly 60% more than the proton's, is quite ordinary for a baryon. But its observed strong decay to a neutron plus a K+ meson marks it as something radically new. A three-quark baryon couldn't possibly decay that way.

Quarks come in six flavors. In increasing mass, the quarks are called: up (u), down (d), strange (s), charmed (c), bottom (b), and top (t). Except for the ultramassive t quark, which doesn't live long enough to form hadrons, each one resides in dozens of well-attested mesons and baryons. Because three quarks make a baryon, we say that each quark has baryon number B = + 1/3. For antiquarks, B = - 1/3. The strong interactions never change a quark's flavor, and net B is strictly conserved in all known physical processes.

What makes the Θ+ exotic is the fact that the s quark has strangeness S = -1, that is, the same strangeness as the K- meson. There are many baryons with negative strangeness that couple to the K-. But to get S = +1, the strangeness of the K+, one needs the antistrange quark s-, and the s- has negative baryon number. So the fewest quarks that could constitute an S = +1 baryon is five. For charge +1, this "pentaquark" configuration would be uudds-. (The electric charge of the u is +2/3; the d and s quarks have charge -1/3, and antiquarks have the opposite charges.)

owww! My head hurts!

I thought it was said (somewhere) that quarks always came in pairs? So how can you have a three quark particle? Three is not a pair or a multiple of pairs!

No wonder Gluon gets confused!

What makes the È+ erotic?

Interesting.....

The new particle of cause will have a five fold rotational symmetry, which if I'm not mistaken would lead to 5 to the 5 Rupert vectors, giving a Bose-Einstein condensate of them the unique property of negative temporal resonance at the flux centre if the mass/charge Eigen functions are normalised for Stradler bifurcation.

So, PP, you gonna build a time machine driven by such a Bose-Einstein condensate? All that negative temporal resonance in one place can't be very good for the normal continuum. It's gonna blow a wormhole into the past or somp'n. Fun to mess with, if you survive.

I though the Pauli exclusion principal prevented Gluon from entering any thread outside of MOAB, which exists outside time, probably space and defintly common sense....

Gluon is not "a damn dog", sir. He is a cross between an Airedale and a duck, and is redolent with charm -- or at least that's my spin on it.

OK- what kind of smarts and/or education must one have to understand and discuss these things? (Not that I'm going there.)

Pretty soon we won't have to discuss matter in terms of sub atomic particle physics, instead string theory will disccuss the mass vector and dimentional vibrations in nearly musical terms.

QUARK!!! QUARK!!!

(Translation: The previous post by "Gluon" was not made by me. I am only capable of saying "QUARK!!!". It's because I'm a duck/dog. It's a cross between "QUACK!!!" and "BARK!!!" However, I am able to impart a tremendous amount of information for a duck/dog with a one-word vocabulary, as is evidenced by this rather lengthy translation.)

Minds me... We were on our way to huntin' in the hills at zero dark hundred hours. Me and my cousin Jimmy up front and my buddy Jim in the back seat. My cousin is one of the foremost aerospace engineers in the world. His specialty at that time was composite skins for high speed military aircraft. He was explaining computer simulation of tau shear in flexible carbon/metal based composites to me. I was not up to snuff on the high level math he was tring to impart to me, but I was keeping up and we had a lively discussion.

At a lull, Jim spoke up and said, "You know I'm deaf in my right ear eh? So shut the fuck up because it's goin' in my left ear and gettin' stuck!!"

Gluon! You is a bad redolent! Gluon just Bernoulli equationed all over the floor. The dog who isn't a dog but a duck dog has created a pond for it's duck self, and forgetting it's quarkiness while paddling for freedom from it's dog self.

(The Bernoulli Equation can be considered to be a statement of the conservation of energy principle appropriate for flowing fluids. The qualitative behavior that is usually labeled with the term "Bernoulli effect" is the lowering of fluid pressure in regions where the flow velocity is increased. This lowering of pressure in a constriction of a flow path may seem counterintuitive, but seems less so when you consider pressure to be energy density. In the high velocity flow through the constriction, kinetic energy must increase at the expense of pressure energy.)

(Translation: That was no Bernoulli effect, Rustic Rebel! That was... Well... If you need to have it explained, you'd never understand it.)
