Obit: Leon Askin-Hogan's Heroes

No musical content mentioned but thought many mudcatters
might remember actor Leon Askin

Askin was best known for his role as the Nazi Gen. Burkhalter
who constantly threatened to send the POW camp's inept
commander, Col. Wilhelm Klink to the Russian front because
of his stupidity. Askin died in Vienna, Austria at age 97.

Guest, I remember him well, & also the rest of the cast on Hogan's Heroes including the woman who played his sister-who seemed to want to be married to Col. Klink. As I recall, Leon Askin was in some of the Hollywood war movies. Seems like I only remember him playing a German.

He was an Austrian Jew, Leon Aschkenasy, and a cabaret performer before escaping the Nazis.
I find it fascinating that most of the Nazis in Hogan's Heroes were played by Jewish actors from Austria or Germany.
Werner Klemperer, John Banner, Leon Askin, Robert Clary (who had actually been in a concentration camp.)
