Virginia, Virginia, the home of the free

The birthplace of Washington the land of liberty

Your soil is invaded by tyrants and knaves

Your fields once so brilliant now gloomy with graves

Virginia, Virginia, the home of the free
       G            D G       D    A7 D
Three cheers for Virginia and sweet liberty

Virginia, Virginia, the battle's begun
We've met the northern army, the vic'try we have won
And the cry of our leaders ever shall be
On, on to the charge ye brave sons follow me

To arms ye brave sires and fly to the field
Thy aim shall be Victory and courage be thy shield
Trust in your God for 'tis he who rules us all
Bow meekly to his rod be ready for his call

This is a genuine War Between the States song, version collected by Francis D. Allan. A few differences in his version from the song sheet.

Lyr. Add: VIRGINIA

Three cheers for Virginia, the home of the free,
The birth-place of Washington, the land of liberty!
Her soil is invaded by tyrants and knaves,
Her fields once so brilliant now gloomy with graves.

Chorus:
Virginia, Virginia, and sweet liberty-
Three cheers for Virginia, the home of the free!

To arms, ye brave sires, and fly to the field;
Thy aim shall be victory, and courage be thy shield;
And trust in your God, for 'tis he that rules us all;
Prepare for thy Maker, be ready for His call.

Virginia, Virginia! the battle's begun;
We've fought the Northern army, and the vict'ry we have won!
Forever the cry of our leaders shall be
"On, on to the charge! brave sons, follow me!"
