Tune/Chord Req: The Old Man (Phil Coulter)

THE OLD MAN

The tears have all been shed now
We've said our last goodbyes
Our band's been asked to sing this one - anyone know the tune and chords?

His soul's been blessed
He's laid to rest
And it's now I feel alone
He was more than just a father
A teacher my best friend
He can still be heard
In the tunes we shared
When we play them on our own

cho: I never will forget him
For he made me what I am
Though he may be gone
Memories linger on
And I miss him, the old man

If someone wishes to do the honours, (I have no guitar with me and I have been away from music for years) you can hear the song at

www.homestead.com/thelazyf/Mydad.html

The tears have all been shed now
We've said our last goodbyes,
His soul's been blessed
He's laid to rest,

And it's now I feel alone,
He was more than just my father
My teacher, my best friend;
And he'll still be heard
In the songs we shared
When I play them on my own.

And I never will forget him
For he made me what I am;
Though he may be gone
Memories linger on--
And I miss him The Old Man.

As a child, he'd take me walking
By mountain, field and stream,
And he'd show me things
Not known to kings,
And secret between him and me,
Like the colours on a pheasant
As he rises in the dawn
Or how to fish, or make a wish
Beside a Fairy tree.

I thought he'd live forever
He seemed so big and strong
But the minutes fly,
And the years roll by
For a father and his little one.
And suddenly when it happened
There was so much left unsaid;
No second chance
To tell him "Thanks",
For everything he'd done

And I never will forget him
For he made me what I am,
Though he may be gone
Memories linger on .....
God I miss him----The Old Man

This is how I do it (with my own arrangement). A great song with lots of emotion. Best recorded version by Finbar Furey .

(G)The tears have(D)all been shed(G)now
We've(C)said our(G)last good(D)byes,
His(C)soul's been(Am)blessed

And I(G) never(D)will for(G)get him
For he(C)made me(G)what I(D)am
Though he (C)may be(Am)gone
Memories(G)linger(Em)on--
And I(G)miss him(D)The Old(G)Man.

As a child, he'd take me walking

It is also available at Christy Moore's website. Sorry, I don't share any of the entusiasm for lyric content of this song that the others do. (Read that as zero.) But I do enjoy playing it. It finger picks real nice.

Don
When did Christy Moore record this one?
Do you mean "The Old Man's Song"? Is that the same one?

You know Brakn, I could be wrong on this. I may be confusing this with "The Voyage" another song I absolutly hate which I know to be on his website.

My band does them both and has recorded "The Old Man". Every time we play them I am overcome with such fits of near vomitus abdominal contractions tyhat I have to remember that I have on a Martin guitar and the sound hole is no place to Barf!

I think we got "The Old Man" from The Irish Tenors or maybe John McCormack and thats where my confusion lays.

Sorry for the misdirection.

Isn't this song called "My Old Man" ? I seem to rember reading that it was written by Finbar after his Dad, Ted Furey(All Ireland Fiddle Champ I think) died.

Phil Coulter was my understanding, but it could be Finbar Furey.

Phil Coulter I think it is.

I know I've been asked to do this one a few times and even been given a copy of it and told to go home and learn it! I don't like it though. It is over the top, but then again I often think that when I hear Finbar Furey sing.

I'm reminded of another that I just couldn't learn; a song called "you're the nearest to perfect"; awful.

(of course....... only my opinion)

For what it's worth,my son and I saw the Furey brothers and Davey Arthur at Vicar Street in Dublin[Feb 04],one of them[Finbar's not with them now]said that Phil Coulter wrote it in tribute to their late father,Ted........
