Here's the answer. Wish I'd had something like it instead of crabs.

If it took you nearly two years to discover this old piece of trype -- you MUST be blind drunk!

I think I remember seeing that headline at the supermarket checkout stand. The other headline was something about a farmer who found a turnip that looked just like W. Shatner.

"Ponekin's fleas were later destroyed, including Sasha, a trapeze artist and star of the show. She was believed to be one of the ringleaders."

I once saw a cockroach circus at chester FF.

The performance started about an hour late and the small venue was bursting at the seams with nosey people like me.

The performance was shambolic.

They stuck blutac on the back of the cockroaches fastened string and a stick to the aforementioned blutac.

And then enacted a tableau depicting the battle of britain.

it was rubbish.

Somebody asked where the cockroaches were from.

They answered to the effect that they had got them from the animal experimentation laboratory where they worked.........

One angry audience!!!!

Anyone else remember this?? It was about 1981.

Cockroach races are quite common. I witnessed one back in 1976 at married students housing, Michigan State University in East Lansing. It was quite exciting! The judges marked off a circle with chalk in a parking lot. The roaches were marked with numbers and released from a cup at the center of the circle at the sound of a trumpet. The winner was the first to make it over the line. The judges had stop watches and young assistants who hunkered down beyond the circle with flyswatters, to crush the roaches as they crossed the finish line. This may seem cruel and unsportmanlike but no one really wanted to encourage the breeding of superfast roaches. I believe there was even a special heat for the foreign competition, giant Brazilian roaches from the soil science lab gang.

Maybe you had to be there to truly appreciate this event.

There was also a lot of beer.

They used to race lice in the lumber camps, among other places. As for the flea circus story, all you'd need is a decent sized dog to walk by and your circus would go on the road.

(Did Sasha wear spangled tights? And how could you tell?)

to get rid of cockroaches, clean out your cupboards with Lavender oil - they hate the smell and you'll have a cockroach-free house.!

The only good cockroach is a flat cockroach.

I had always (mis?)understood that "flea circuses" were a genial, eye-winking fraud, in that no fleas were involved, that the springboards, swings, trapezes, merry-go-rounds were powered, and the audience either "saw" what they expected to see, or were invited in on the game, as it were, pretending that fleas were doing the various acts.

I may be wrong. I have been wrong before. (A handsome admission, if I ever heard one!)

Tune: "The Eggplant that Ate Cincinnati"

The Roaches Inherit the Earth

Em
I must offer to you a confession,
---Am-------------------------Em
It's one that I've known from my birth,
-----------Am
Given nuc-lear power,
--Em
In that final hour
----Bm
The roaches inherit the earth!

Chorus:

Bm----Em------Bm
Dah-di dum-dum, dum-dum,
Bm----Em------Bm
Dah-di dum-dum, dum-dum!

You may call it my ghoulish obsession,
It's a subject which gives me much mirth,
Experts are all thumbs,
When the meltdown comes,
And the roaches inherit the earth...

I've heard from the NRC stooges,
And nuclear dupes by the score,
Their plans were respected,
Were seldom rejected,
And nuke plants grew more and more...

We'll soon have a Garden of Eden,
We'll live off the fat of the land,
Strontium 90 is dandy,
Plutonium's candy,
And for roaches won't it be grand...

Experts are all thumbs,
When the meltdown comes,
And the roaches inherit the earth!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
