Tried them some years ago. Them made smoking more enjoyable. Other than that, no change. Since they only put the stuff into your system, you have to do something about the physical habit itself. If the addiction isn't chemical, forget it.

If you work up a sweat, they fall right off. So NO exercise. Mack/ is right, I would sometimes find out that I had TWO of them on when lighting up. HOWEVER, the really good news is that I realized I had quit smoking when I realized, on a couple of occassions, that the darned things had fallen off ten or twelve hours before I felt the urge for a cigarette, and I hadn't even known they were gone.

A dear friend's sister was on them.

She was watching videos with her girl-friends on a late Sat/ early Sun.

Snuck outside to the kitchen steps of her trailer, for a secret-smoke.

Was dead 30 minutes later.

NICOTINE POISONING - quite common in those trying to quit with the patch.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

nicky tin patches are more expensive than buying cigs

so the conclusion to be drawn is - sod the patches and keep smoking, its cheaper

It's no myth, Clinton. I've never tried them, and I never will. They are too expensive, and much too risky. (Hence the BIG warnings on every package).

Haven't got time to find the clickies for you right now, but a couple minutes of exploring medical/ scientific articles online shows that nicotine substitutes can and do cause angina, heart attacks, and death - especially in light smokers like myself (less than half a pack a day), or if a quitter lights up while wearing one.

On a similar note - have you ever pondered what will happen to all those trendy health-food-pristine-lifestyle-exercise-fanatics in about 40 years? There they'll be, laid out in hospital beds or nursing homes with all of us lesser mortals, dying of .... of .... well, of ....

nothing?!?

Success rate with/without patch is same. The patch will help you through the irritability as long as you wear it. The only thing I can see is that there is an offset between how much better you will feel physically without the smokes and the irritability as you decrease the nicotine delivery from the patch.

Re price, you can cut one 21mg patch into smaller pieces and not spend as much money when you start to decrease the nic delivery.

There are 'side effects' and some can be dangerous. So, go take a class or get info from the various health groups and try to cut down and then quit. It ain't easy, but cold turkey is actually the best way. However, quitting cold turkey is dangerous for friends, relatives, small animals, and inanimate objects that will do whatever they can to raise your ire. Get help!

Here's the real bitch about the patch... the dreams and night sweats. I HAD to take mine off about an hour before bedtime in order to sleep.

I suppose you might be wondering about my success rate. Hang on while I get another cup of tea and a smoke... and stop coughing. Makes it hard to type.

Good luck.

No. Seek info. There's lots available and it will help. No sense reinventing the wheel. Then quit.

After smoking for three packs of Marlboro regulars a day for nearly thirty two years it was the patch and Wellbutrin that finally was enough of an aid to quit. I haven't looked back in over five years.

I think being successful at quitting smoking cigarettes is more a matter of motivation than the aids used although the aids seem to offer a little more strength in resolve as immediate capitulation to the temptation can be avoided. Nothing weakens resolve more quickly that yielding to temptation.

I will say though some of the dreams were rather bizarre although I'm not sure if dream activity increased or it was just a matter of an elevation in dream recall ability.

Good luck.

Peace,
Ed

Clinton - you are certainly not urbane - however, you ARE gaining a legendary status in stupidity. As the Irish Author wrote, "apologize, apologize, or the eagles will come and pluck out your eyes."

Vicky McC------ is definately dead. She was on the patch. She did smoke immediately before dieing.

http://www.inchem.org/documents/pims/chemical/nicotine.htm#SectionTitle:9.3%20Course,%20prognosis,%20cause%20of%20death
In fatal cases of nicotine poisoning, death is usually rapid; it occurs nearly always within 1 hour and occasionally within 5 minutes. According to the traditional view, death is due toparalysis of the respiratory muscles; paralysis of medullarycentres controlling respiration requires a larger dose.

http://www.quitnet.com/library/Guides/NRT/NRT_patch_use.jtml
Remember to treat any nicotine-containing product with respect. While both the patch and the gum eliminate most of health risks associated with tobacco use, nicotine itself can cause serious medical problems, including death, if abused.

http://www.quitsmokingsupport.com/thepatch.htm
f you are dumb and you smoke while you are wearing a patch or shortly after removing one, you could suffer symptoms of nicotine overdose, such as death

http://www.connectingwithkids.com/tipsheet/2003/134_jul23/patch.html
Nicotine also acts directly on the heart to change heart rate and blood pressure. In high concentrations, it is deadly. In fact, one drop of purified nicotine on the tongue will kill a person. And its so lethal that it has been used as a pesticide for centuries.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002510.htm
Overdose may cause seizures. Recovery depends on the dose, the amount of time before treatment, and severity of seizures. An overdose may be fatal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine_poisoning
Sixty milligrams of nicotine will kill an adult, which is about the amount of nicotine in three or four cigarettes or half a cigar, if all nicotine were absorbed.

Gargoyle

Anyone remember the TV ad with Fred Flintstone saying, after taking a great puff, "Ah, Winston tastes good, like a cigarette should."? I'd like to sue the bastard.

Winstons, like most American cigarettes (not to mention beer), taste like excrement. Unless you're habituated, they are so harsh and laden with chemical additives even one puff can bring on nausea. But they're NOTHING compared to Spanish cigarettes! Try one of those, if you've got the nerve!

Kinda like swallowing a flaming sword.   No wonder the 'throat-clearing sound' is so vital in the Spanish language. Seems like every other word or so has it's little hork!

I'll even let you buy me an medium ice cap (with chocolate milk) and a whole wheat carrot muffin! JUst plain, no butter. And a snack pack of timbits for later - make 'em as chocolatey as possible. And maybe a couple blueberry bagels, and one of those sweet strawberry Timtarts, and .... and ...

Oh forget it. I'm feeling WAY too blubbery now. Like, WAY!! Gotta make my way outside for some deep breathing and some fresh air ...

gotta light?

You keep blowing out your matches with your coughing too, eh? Tim's... nope, not me. Their tea sucks. As for coffee, haven't had a cup for years and years. Asd for Tim's coffee, I always figured all them pigeons in the parking lot were on staff to gather the old wooden stir sticks for making more coffee. As for deep fried balls of dough mixed with, injected with, and covered with every sweet substance known to mankind, putrid!!! Downright UNhealthy!!!

Nosiree. When I light up in the morning and fill my lungs with acrid, toxic smoke and fumes, I prefer to soothe the smoker's polyps in my throat with a beaverage made from boiled leaves and the whitish liquid produced by the mammary glands of a large, smelly, bovine. Far more healthy. Until midday, upon whence I change out the tea for Budweiser (Canadian brewed), from an aluminum can, to flush out the caffeine. Of course, in the morning, the tea flushes out the aluminum, thereby avoiding the onset of, ah, er, Oldtimers disease... or whatever it's called.

Got a light?

The gum, in my exp[erience, was ap erfect replacement for smoking except that Ihe user can ramp up to greater and greater amounts of gum.

I never had aproblem with patches falling off, but they didn't really work for my smoking habit.

The tablets -- called "Commit" worked much better for me. I quit for two years, back slid for a couple of months and am off the smokes again, using the tablets.

In my experience there are two kinds of addiction. Nicotine is the dtrongest chemical addiction. But I have found in talking to people that sopme people -- predominantly women -- are more addicted to the behaviours than the chemistry and the hardest part of quitting for them is giving up all the little behavioral triggers, like lighting up when th phone rings or when having a drink. I don't think a chemical solution will help solve a behavioral addiction.

But for me, I swear by "Commit" tabs.

Except that they are hard to get out of the foil packet.

Gum. Noooo! That crap can cause polyps on your vocal cords and windpipe. BTW, I knew a guy who smoked four packs (100) a cigs a day for 45 years. Went to a hypotherapist... done... no withdrawl. I went too. Gotta light?

Nicky Tams is the name given to the string used by farm workers to tie their trousers below the knees, partly to hitch them up out of the mud.

I've been on them three weeks on Thursday and the dreams are wild.
Not so the hours lying awake unable to sleep, or the depression and lack of motivation.

Been a heavy smoker for thirty-odd years, and it'll be a while before I get on top of all the little signals that say NOW'S THE TIME TO LIGHT UP!

But I'm pretty sure I will. I think it's the resolution that counts. The patches keep the family together, but it's the will to quit that makes you quit.

At least that's what I keep telling myself.

Hey daylia... you're going to like this one, from Times & Transcript in Moncton, today:

A young black bear visited a few backyards on Waterfall Drive in Riverview yesterday. Here, the bear checks out the live trap set up by the Dept. of Natural Resources. The trap was filled with Tim Hortons muffins, bagels and doughnuts since 'Everyone loves Tim Hortons.' The bear was capatured and taken out of the town.

They took pics of the young male 2 year old standing at the trap. This went on for a few days. The trap door would not trip. And, the Wardens had a gun and tranquilizers but they are using new drugs and nobody had any training as to how much drugs the bear should get. He got a shitload of donuts!!! For about three days!!!

And, when the DNR trap wouldn't work, one of the neighbours tried to lasso it. I wish he would have. We need to clean the scum out of the gene pool.

Finally, just after the pic in the paper of him at the door of the trap was taken, he went in and one of the guys in the neighbourhood ran at the trap. The bear saw him coming and tried to get out, but buddy DOVE like a cornerback after an interception and sprung the door shut. Ended up getting the wind knocked out of him. When he was interviewed about it he said, " Enough is enough."

Ah, ya gotta live here ta get it eh? Now, why didn't Alpine beer cash in on all this free publicity. I wonder if the bear is on Tim's payroll?
