Lyr Req: Get Off the Stove Grandma You're Too Old

Is this just a joke title or a real song? Had a request on WPILFM for it. The person thought Merle Haggard may have done it:

"Get off the stove grandma, you're too old to ride the range."

Thanks!

I would love to see a set of lyrics too - But I have a feeling its in the same lot as the good old 'Dont go Down the Mine Daddy ,You've Got Enough Slack in Your Pants'

Sounds like a Homer & Jethro type number.

If it is a real song, it was around long before Merle appeared on the music scene; I heard the title on the farmhouse radio when I was too young to shovel dinosour poop.

All I could find in my search was that the song is by "Colin Hartridge (SOCAN)". SOCAN is the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada. From its website (www.socan.ca), it looks like SOCAN is a Canadian version of BMI or ASCAP. So Colin may be a Canadian songwriter, eh?

Is this of the same ilk as 'While peeping through the knot-hole in Grandma's wooden leg'?

'Course it's a real song. Performed ably by those purveyors of Death Western, Lady Winwood's Maggot. In fact I was listening to another track on that CD just the other day.

In Fact:

When I got home in the dead of night
I chanced upon an eerie sight
For there before me in the pilot light
Was my dear old white haired gran
She looked at me with a glint in her eye
Threw back her head and let out a cry
She hitched up her skirt
And began to ride
Amongst the pots and pans

Get off the gas stove granny
You're too old to ride the range
Get off the gas stove granny
You're too old to ride the range
If the neighbours were to see you
They would think you awful strange
Get off the gas stove granny
You're too old to ride the range

Well she sucked upoon her whisky
Like it was going out of style
Things were really heating up
Because she had been there a while
And I was getting anxious
In case she burst her piles
But she was revving up
To do another twenty miles

You're too old to ride the range
Get off the gas stove granny
You're too old to ride the range
If go at it much harder
The hob won't take the strain
Get off the gas stove granny
You're too old to ride the range

Well granny kept on riding
Like she was on the pony express
But nuts and bolts were popping
The stove was under stress
The whole lot came crashing down
In one God Almighty mess
She caught her knicker elastic
In her walking frame
Choked herself to death

You're too old to ride the range
Get off the gas stove granny
You're too old to ride the range
To have her surgically removed
Was something to arrange
Get off the gas stove granny
You're too old to ride the range

Well granny she was buried
All the mourners stood and cried (boohoo)
And the preacher said
"She's gone to Jesus (hallelujah)
To walk right by his side"
But I know something different
So I couldn't help but smile
'Cause granny's gone a-riding
In that gas showroom in the sky

Get off the gas stove granny
You're too old to ride the range
Get off the gas stove granny
You're too old to ride the range
Now Granny's gone to Heaven
To ride with Jesse James
Was something to arrange
Get off the gas stove granny
You're too old to ride the range

How old is it? I remember Packie Byrne delivering this line at Herga in the 70s, along with "fetch the hammer, there's a fly on baby's head"

Colin Hartridge, also known as Captain Maniac, played drums in a rock band called Sparkling Apple based in Vancouver BC 1973-1991. He now lives in Surrey BC and works as a graphic artist for a local newspaper. You'll find his band described here and his guest book entry, including an e-mail address, on this page.

I remember it being used for a joke song title around 1962-63, from a guy who'd got it from someone else years previously - which I presume is earlier than the Colin Hartridge lyrics. I suppose Hartridge (or someone) made up the song after hearing the daft title.

Hi, it's me -- Captain Maniac. Yes, my real name is Colin Hartridge and as Jim mentioned, I played drums in a Vancouver BC rock band called Sparkling Apple. During the 70s, we had our own record label, RadioActive Records, and "Get Off the Stove, You're Too Old to Ride the Range" was on a 12-inch EP titled "Play At Your Own Risk". Of course, the song was a joke title, but it actually was a for-real song. Back in 1974 we also released "I'm Only Here For the Beer" on Foot Records. The title was based on a 70s t-shirt design!

Keep on rockin',
Colin
