FYI - for any 'catters in the Portland, OR, area. I just got an email detailing John Doans schedule for the next few months. This is part of the note. Just in case anyone has an interest. If you go, please post review notes back here, if you don't mind. I've never actually seen him, but I've heard some of his recordings and really enjoyed them.

Special Note: This year I am hosting an international harp guitar gathering in Salem, Oregon at Willamette University this coming September 3rd and 4th with a special preview performance in Portland on September 2nd. It is titled, "Beyond Six Strings - The Harp Guitar's History, Players, and Makers." Harp guitarists, instrument makers, and historians will be coming from all over the world to exchange ideas and swap tunes. There will also be the most harp guitars ever to be assembled in one place for an instrument show! You won't want to miss the debut of a 90 minute documentary video titled "In Search of the Harp Guitar" on Saturday September 3rd at 3PM. In it I travel around the world interviewing players, makers, and historians chronicling my adventures. It is bound to be a classic!

For more information about the harp guitar gathering go to .

Cheers
PB

PB ... thank you for this posting. I'm very interested in the harp guitars, especially those of the 1880's and 1890's built in Port Townsand, Washington. I know where there are several around. CHEERS, Bob (deckman) Nelson, in Everett, Washington

I saw John Doan a number of years ago. He was phenomenal! Not just a great guitarist, but a stage presence that makes you really listen to what he's playing.

I wonder if he's any relation to Roscius (Rosh) Doan, a much-admired former colleague of mine in Seattle.

Aloha,
Mark

Rog called me from work, yesterday, to tell me to put on the tv. John Doan was playing his incredible 20 STRING harp guitar, some crazy autoharps and other things which sounded incredible. It was all part of his Victorian Christmas show. Stunning and most beautiful. I found his website at John Doan dot com. I figured Mudcatters would know about him after they said he'd done a concert in Portland.:-)

Thanks,

kat

Just had time to sit and really look over this guy's website. There are some wonderful audio clips, although one or two are a bit too over-done for my taste.

That twenty-string harp guitar is really something! There's a neat picture of the person who invented in what looks like the Victorian Era with his family and various other instruments.
