Rothvoss Farm (Grey Fox Site) For Sale!

Word is out that the beautiful Rothvoss Farm in Ancramdale, NY is for sale. This is where the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival (formerly called Winterhawk) has been held for many years. Looks like this will be the last year on the wonderful hill, although the organizers are looking for a new site.

Asking price is $8,000,000.

We've gone almost every year since my 23-year-old son was 4. I have never seen a sunset as beautiful as the view from the audience amphitheater looking out over the valley with Berkshires beyond. The show always stops while thousands cheer and salute the sunset spectacle each night. There is no vibe quite like Grey Fox. The music and the festival will continue elsewhere, but the farm will become a tract of McMansions, probably. Hopefully the next location will be somewhere where the developers can't find it for many more years.

In case anyone on Mudcat cares...

Drunks and fat girls with navel rings....

And sitting so high up the hill that the performers look like Fisher-Price people...

There's a lot of festivals I'd miss a lot more.

I have friends who don't go to Grey Fox anymore because they don't like the X or Y or Z or drunks or fat girls or navel rings... I'm not too fond of X or Y or Z either, but I do love the workshops and the community and the food and the view and the A and B and C... I wouldn't want every festival to be alike, and this one is so unique and so different from anything else we do all year that I look forward to it every July. And I will regret the loss of a beautiful 200 acre piece of land, victim of the almighty dollar.

I just came from a great week at Grey Fox. The festival owners says that they are looking for a new 200 acre site. We do have one more year at Rothvoss to celebrate 30 years of music on the hill! Quiet camping avoids alot of the drunks etc.

I also had a great time there, although still not fully recovered from no sleep and still wired from so much great music.

They announced onstage that the festival would be held at the farm again next year. I'm not totally crazy about the steep hilly camping, so it wouldn't bother me if they found another beautiful level site with a view and maybe even a lake!

We camped as usual in the RV section and picked until 3 every morning. No drunks, just fantastic jams with a variety of guitars, banjos, mandolins, fiddles, Dobro, bass and some wonderful singers. Many of the (presumably sleeping) neighbors told us the next day that they loved our music. One woman was sick and couldn't leave her camper, but thanked us for the music and making her feel like part of the festival despite everything.

On Sunday morning during the rain, about 12 of us did a quick a cappella gospel set to send us all home.

But then we stood in line in our camper about 45 minutes waiting for the cars and trailers to come down the main hill in the new mud, slipping and sliding. Our road (near the dance tent) was fine, but they had to clear everyone off the other muddy road before we could proceed.

On to the cleanup and preparation for the next one...
