Lyr Add: When We Go Rolling Home (Tams)

WHEN WE GO ROLLING HOME
(John Tams)

Round goes the wheel of fortune,
Don't be afraid to ride.
There's a land of milk and honey
Waits on the other side;
There'll be peace and there'll be plenty
You'll never need to roam --
When we go rolling home;
When we go rolling home.

CHORUS:
Rolling home, (when we go)
Rolling home, (when we go)
Rolling , rolling,
When we go rolling home.

The gentry in its fine array
Do prosper night and morn
While we unto the fields must go
To plow and sow the corn,
The rich may steal the power
But the glory is our own
When we go rolling home, (2X)

(Chorus)

The summer of resentment
The winter of despair
The journey to contentment
Is set with trap and snare;
Stand true and stand together
Your labor is your own,
When we go rolling home (2X)

(Chorus)
The frost is on the hedgerow
The icy winds do blow
While we poor weary laborers
Strive through the sleet and snow;
Our hopes fly up to glory
Up where the larks do go
When we go rolling home(2X)

(Chorus)

So pass the bottle round
And let the toasts go free
It's a health to every laborer
Wherever he may be
Fair wages now and ever
Let's reap what we have sown
When we go rolling home (2X)

(Chorus)

Repeat first verse and Chorus
^^

BAZ, I'd be delighted to get you the tune as soon as I figure out what it is. Give her the words and tell her the tune is coming. I have trouble telling the melody from the harmonies in the Webber/Fentiman recording. It's on "Beggars Velvet -Lady of Autumn" if you want to buy it and try to sort out the parts yourselves. (grin)
Otherwise, sorry, but you'll have to wait. Have a blessed Yule.

Barbara

Hi Folk`s

Merry Christmas from Germany.

The first verse and the chorus of "When We Go Rolling Home" you also can hear in a movie called "Ragedy". It´s a movie about travelling people andin one scene when they´re working on a field in harvest time they sing this song.

Greetings

BRUNO

A great version of this, with a mass chorus, can be found at the end of one of Roy Bailey's CDs. Unfortunately, I've forgotten which one. I'll have to go home and look, and let you know next year.
Happy New Year to all the Mudcatters! Susanne

MIKE
I'm hoping Joe Offer or one of the other boffins will pick up on this and put in a link to Alan of Oz's clever prog. that turns a midi file into a text file and enables it to be posted here within a thread.
Thanks for taking the time

The Roy Bailey version is on 'What You Do With What You've Got', a 1992 compilation brought out by Fuse Records. It's the one original track on the CD, recorded live at the White Horse Folk Club in Beverley (with, as Roy says in his notes, 'a somewhat enthusiastic audience'), and features John Kirkpatrick on button accordion. The whole CD is a marvellous introduction to Roy's work. - Susanne

Took me awhile, BAZ, but there it is.
And a few minor corrections to the lyrics, too:
(corrections in bold Verse 2
The gentry in its fine array do prosper night and morn...

Verse 3
The summer of resentment, the winter of despair
The journey to contentment is set with trap and snare
Think that's about it.
Great song!
Blessings,
Barbara

As I understand it, when John Tams originally wrote Rolling Home it was for a play in which he was involved. He only wrote two verses, "Round goes the wheel..." and "The gentry... ".

His friend Roy Bailey really liked the song, but said he felt there ought to be more verses before he (Roy) could feel it was complete enough for him to do in concert. John then wrote the other verses. I first heard it recorded by Swan Arcade, who sang four verses, but not the one starting "The frost is on the hedgrerow..."

Two, four or five verses, - what a great song!!!

I think it's an English pub song. It refers to the ease and luxury of the rich, with lines like "while we poor weary laborers do plow the fields of corn...". It's not in the DT as far as I can tell!
Thanks- this song has been waking me up at night!

This was written by John Tams.

Round goes the wheel of fortune, don't be afraid to ride,
There's a land of milk and honey waits on the other side.
There'll be peace and there'll be plenty, you'll never need to roam,
When we go rolling home, when we go rolling home.

ch: Rolling home, when we go rolling home, when we go rolling, rolling, when we go rolling home.

The gentry in their finery do prosper night and morn,
While we unto the fields must go, to plough and sow the corn.

Several verses omitted due to encroaching senility...

The summer of resentment, the winter of despair,

Same again, I'll fill in these blanks when I get my songsheet tomorrow...

So pass the bottle round, and let the toast go free,
here's a health to every labourer, wherever he may be.
Fair wages now and ever, we'll reap what we have sown,
When we go rolling home, when we go rolling home.

Ch.^^

More soon. Can girls sing this song, do you think?

Gee, by the thread title I thought you were looking for an old Boy Scout song:

I've got six pence, jolly, jolly six pence. I've got six pence to last me all my life. I've got two pence to lend and two pence to spend, And two pence to take home to my wife (poor wife).

No cares have I to grieve me, No pretty little girls to deceive me. I'm as happy as a lark believe me. As we go rolling, rolling home. Rolling home (rolling home), Rolling home (rolling home), As we go rolling, rolling home. Happy as the day when a poor man gets his pay, As we go rolling, rolling home.

It goes on with four pence, then two pence, and then no pence.

Thanks for the memory!

The missing bits:

second half of 2nd verse:

The rich may steal the power, but the glory's ours alone,
When we go rolling home, when we go rolling home. Chorus

The frost is on the hedgerow, the icy winds do blow,
While we poor weary labourers strive through the driving snow
Their dreams fly up to glory, up where the lark has flown
When we go rolling home, when we go rolling home. Chorus

The summer of resentment, the winter of despair,
The journey to contentment is set with trap and snare
Stand to and stand together, your labour's yours alone
When you go rolling home, when you go rolling home. Chorus

You've got the last verse from Dai.

I could regret this but I'm going to rise to the bait and ask why girls shouldn't sing this song?^^

Thanks Liz, you've saved me a lot of typing... There is, of course, no reason girls shouldn't sing this song. Neither is there a reason that guys shouldn't sing The Trees They Do Grow High, but personally I wouldn't...

I've just always thought of this as a rollicking, rowdy, weekend-in-the-woods-discovering-your-power-animal kind of number, to be belted out in basso profundo while quaffing (yes, quaffing) Frog Island Owd Sole-Bender, belching and scratching. None of these activities can I easily reconcile with the ladies who attend our folky circle... no, really!

Thanks a million, Dai and Liz! The group I occasionally sing with does a rousing version of this whatever their gender. Two nights ago I literally leapt out of bed at 2 amwhen I heard this song roaring through my dreams at top volume- I took it as a sign that I should learn this song!
I just finished explainging to a class of 4th graders why boys could too sing "When I was a fair maid" even though it doesn't apply to them- so I'm with Liz, I can too sing this song!
Thanks again- Allison

Lovely song - just back from the Half Moon session in Bishop's Stortford (Herts Essex border) where we ended the evening with it. But I always feel the fourth verse should go:

The frost is on the hedgerow
The icy winds do blow
While we poor weary laborers
Strive through the sleet and snow;
Our hopes fly up to glory
Our feet remain below
When we go rolling home(2X)

And I don't know if that's just my earthbound nature amending it, or if I heard someone sing it that way once.

Anyway, I post it here as a variant. (I know Roy Bailey sings it with the larks. One of his tricks is to get the crowd singing it, then nip out and come into the back of the hall to see how it's still going, and join in.)

This is fine example of the "Folk Process" in action.

McGrath, I don't think it matter which version you sing, the sentiment is still expressed clearly either way.

A great song by any standards, and I was lucky enough to be first on the West Australian folk scene to sing it.

Murray, I have been singing "their" rather than "its" for a while, but another question on that verse was raised by a friend. We have all learned it from the oral tradition -- no printed words -- and he asks, "Isn't it 'The gentry in [their] finery..." Good question. I don't know the answer, and when we're singing it, it doesn't matter because most ears can' tell the difference between 'finery' and 'fine array'. Think we could get JOhn Tams to drop in and answer a few questions when he isn't busy being Leftenent Somebody on Sharpes Rifles?

So I quess you won't be making anymore singing session, eh? To the other folks on site, just to let you know Murray here is one good guitar player & one real hell of a singer, Scotland' loss is our great gain. Barry

Hi Penny
I have to confess it was us at Trelowarren
That was our first gig as a new band (Jaryon).
We've been booked back for the season this year as well as at Roskillys and the Top House at the Lizard.
Did we get a chance to speak? I was the oldest one with beard and pony tail and playing bazouki, guitar, concertina and whistle.
If your back this way this year let us know I only live a couple of mile from Trelowarren.

It's a really good bunch, good musicians (the sort who make me aware I can't even play the triangle) good repertoire, (which I wasn't able to give the attention it deserved - don't ask, Baz knows, and he's the only one who needs to), and I would recommend anyone down there to go and hear them. A high point of that clouded out, amplified out (from the speakers at the festival) week. I intend to give them my full attention at some time in the future.

If you don't know the area, Roskilly's makes icecream from heaven, clotted ceam and the most wonderful range of flavours I know - fresh fruit in season - strawberry that really tastes of it, gooseberry, raspberry, blackberry, my mouth's watering. Baskin-Robbins, B & J, eat your cones out.

I don't wish to sound carping, 'cos I know I get more from the Cafe than I put into it, but if Barbara posted the words to this song on Christmas Eve a year ago, why isn't it in the DT

BE, possibly because it is a new song and we don't have John Tam's permission to put it in the database. You can find it with a forum search, as you see.

I really, really, really want the tune to this song. I've heard it and sung the chorus many times but I fear my memory of the verse is wrong. I have followed the directions for MIDIText and sure enough a file gets created as expected and the MicroSoft Media player gets opened when I double-click it but there is no sound and the time shows 0:00/0:00.

The txt file is 3K and the mid file is 1K. What am I doing wrong?

Tony - when I use miditxt - for some reason when I cut and paste into wordpad, I get leading spaces on every line. Until I delete them, my midi's don't work.

I've learnt Rolling Home by osmosis - repeated renditions at Herga by Johnny Collins, Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman. This isn't just a drinking song but a deeply subversive and political one about the need for agricultural labourers to organise.

By the way, Dai must frequent a very sedate folk club if he hasn't met women who quaff, or sing bass harmonies. He clearly wasn't at the Wareham Wail.

Hi All.

I hope everybody remembers to credit John Tamms when they sing AWGRH. Tamms has writen a wealth of great songs which are frequently mistaken as being traditional. (and Dave Webber too).

I fell in love with this song when first I heard it, sung by Ricky Rackin of our parish, and was amazed to discover that it was apparently commissioned for the stage production of "War Horse." Folllowing up on that thread led me to the production itself, the amazing life-sized'puppets' created for it, and the UTube recordings by John Tams as well as the rousing rendition by the cast itself -- all of which I recommend to Mudcatters for a really good plunge into the theatrical world. Following this thread in retrospect is really satisfying!

"Commissioned for War Horse" is just a wee bit inaccurate, arminia!
Bits of it do get sung in War Horse, but (from John Tams' own website!) the song was written "around 1987", and featured in a TV dramatisation of "Cider with Rosie". Only a few years out, but great song, especialy for rounding off an evening!

I didnt realise that Mr Tams was an American - or he would never have used the word 'laborers' but would have used the English spelling, eh?
(I dont mind in the least when Yanks spell it that way - but you Brits, come on lazy folks. :-)

Well that clears up the confusion from the War Horse programme and the CD (only the first two verses in that). I couldn't understand why I already knew it.

I have been listening very carefully to the War Horse CD, where the gentry clearly have "fine array", and it sounds as if the "feel" the power rather than "steal" it. Definitely no sibilants.

When I attended a John Tams and Barry C concert in 2003 ish , I felt shortchanged when for their final song they sang Rolling Home and left the stage after 2 verses

Now I know why

SSSSTEAL - no question, Penny S! Must be poor reproduction on your CD, or else it's been changed for Warhorse!
He doesn't do the "frost" verse in this clip

I think it must have been changed - the reproduction isn't bad. And sssss's are very hard to obscure. I must say I prefer steal. The tune on that clip seems a bit different from that in War Horse, as well.

Thanks

Not that I'd be flogging you, DH, but the spelling of the words [UK or AM] is dependent on the transcriber not the writer. If you want to go along and add all the unnecessary vowels, and drop a few 'aitches' as well, feel free.
Blessings,
Barbara

I believe I heard early on in the rise of Rolling Home (like about 10+ years ago) that the 'Frost is on the hedgerow' verse was added later and written by John Tams at Roy Bailey's request, as in, please make the song longer.

These days most folks I know here on the left coast sing the last verse
So pass the bottle round
And let the toasts go free
It's a health to every laborer
Where he or she may be
Fair wages now and ever
Let's reap what we have sown
When we go rolling home (2X)

Blessings
Barbara

The last verse of "Rolling Home" - as written by John Tams - has the non-gender specific

"Here's a health to every labourer
Wherever THEY may be..."

So there's no need to change the original anyway.

This song was used in the 1988 film "The Raggedy Rawney" starring Bob Hoskins, when the travellers were singing and dancing around the campfire.

Is this song related to I've Got Sixpence?

From the DT:

I've got sixpence
Jolly. jolly sixpence
I've got sixpence to last me all my life
I've got twopence to spend
And twopence to lend
And twopence to send home to my wife-poor wife.

CHORUS: No cares have I to grieve me
No pretty little girls to deceive me
I'm happy as a lark believe me
As we go rolling, rolling home
Rolling home (rolling home)
Rolling home (rolling home)
By the light of the silvery moo-oo-on
Happy is the day when we line up for our pay
As we go rolling, rolling home.

I've wondered that, too, oldhippie. Both songs seem to be excellent ways to conclude evenings of drinking and singing....
I wonder if John Tams had "sixpence" in mind when he wrote his song. My guess is that he did.
