BS: Happy Birthday CANUCKS

Today is Canada Day. July 1, 1867 was the day we became The Dominion of Canada. It is a day for all pround and patriotic Canadians to gather together at the camp or cottage or backyard, drink copious quantities and overcook the oversized burgers in a drunken stupour.

Me... I'm goin to my CAMP! First time this year. I bolted from the bunk at first light like a little kid at Christmas.

Have a real good day EH!

Have a a great day Gnu and all Canadians everywhere likewise.
As a Scot I suppose I should be resentfull about the Scottish infantrymen that General Woolfe sacrificed at Quebec who don't even get a mention in the song Bold General Woolfe. But hey it's ancient history, and it's not actually your fault either, so have a drink on me. Remember that with a name like MacKenzie I could probably lay claim to large tracts of your country ;~)

gnu,
Have fun at your camp! Drive safely, eh?

Thank you for supporting our Canadian wildlife by donating blood to needy mosquitos and blackflies.

I think I will celebrate by sitting indoors with my feet up. I'll peek out at 11 pm and hope to see the fireworks, across town.

Geez Giok, at least half of us Canucks areScots (by heritage, as well as Scotch by absorption). And if you haven't already read it, which I doubt, I refer you to Alistair MacLeod's novel "No Great Mischief". As for land claims, check with the First Nations before you hire a surveyor, they've gotten pretty well organized...

So far my Canada Day has been getting up early, doing a bit of work on the new little car we are adopting, then my wife went off to work (this is of course shameful behaviour unless you are a street vendor, but she is still American despite my best efforts). I rotated all the tires on her car then finally cracked open my first Creemore at 9:30.

This evening we're playing at the festivities in Perth. I'm secretly excited about this. Conlon Farm ain't Parliament Hill, but we're opening for Sue Foley's kid brother's band, then there's fireworks. It will be cool!

SO, Gnu, where's your camp? I'm hopin to visit you sometime when I get up to see the rels around Saint John.

Happy Canada Day!

We're going to have a fire in the chiminea, drink a few Molsons (JtS) and gin and grapefruit juice (me), and watch a movie after the campfire.

Well, I'm sitting in west Wales wearing my Silly Canadian Umbrella Hat, and I have the front yard decked with a variety of Canadian flags in this little corner of Wales which is forever Canada (or at least until the mortgage company forecloses).

Tonight I shall find something red to wear and go to the pub in the hopes that I can con someone into a game of crokinole. Yes, our pub has a crokinole board (courtesy of moi) and was the venue of the European Crokinole Championships, and we, the undefeated team. Larglely because we are unchallenged due to the lack of other European players beyond those who drink in this particular pub.

Oh, and I sang O Canada twice this morning - once in English, once in French.

Crokinole Well somebody had to look it up. It would appear to be a cross between shove ha'penny and tiddly winks. I'd like to see it played.

I spent my day quietly pulling weeds, and tuning harps, but I am terribly proud of my country Canada, and smiled as the fireworks lit the neighbourhood sky after the sun went down.

I was told last night, by an Irishamn in his cups, my show was the best of several Canada Days he's ever had

"My middle fingernail aches just READING the rules!" LOL!!!

I am beat to a snot! Lots of moose, deer, rabbits, trout, etc, and we had two or three skeeters... ("skeeters" in Kent County is a term meaning "RUN!!!!").

I enjoyed the fireworks immensely. From dusk to almost dawn, the fireflies (Glowbugs to some?) lit up the night. And, last night, you could touch the stars.

Even put 50km on the ATV yesterday.

Now, I gotta go take a couple of showers.

Read the following and you'll know one of the many reasons I love this country. However, it will cause a few tears. It did me.

Yes, guest Canadian, I am proud to live in a country that breeds men like Dallaire. Lets hope we can push other countries to recognize the need for a co-ordinated effort in Darfur.

From the above link:

"They knew how many people were dying," Dallaire says, no matter what word they used. "The world is racist," he says bitterly. ,' "Africans don't count; Yugoslavians do. More people were killed, injured, internally displaced, and refugeed in 100 days in Rwanda than in the whole eight to nine years of the Yugoslavia campaign," he says, and there are still peacekeeping troops in the former Yugoslavia while Rwanda is again off the radar. f "Why didn't the world react to scenes where women were held as shields so nobody could shoot back while the militia shot into the | crowd?" he asks. "Where... boys were drugged up and turned into child soldiers, slaughtering families?...Where girls and women were systematically raped before they were killed? Babies ripped out of their stomachs? ...Why didn't the world come?"
Dallaire supplies his own answer: "Because there was no self-interest....No oil. They didn't come because some humans are [considered] less human than others."
