happy? - July 3 ("Chisholm Trail")

03 Jul 05 - 10:18 AM (#1514364)
Subject: happy? - July 3
From: Abby Sale

        I hit Butte, Montana,
         On July the third
        And on the Fourth
         I couldn't shit a dry tird

                Chorus:
                Coma Ti Yi Yuppa
                 Yuppa Ya Yuppa Ya
Coma Ti Yi Yuppa Yuppa Ya

"The Old Chisholm Trail", in Poems, Ballads -and- Parodies; Printed for Distribution
Among Members only and not for Sale
by Benardin Society, c.1928

Of this song, Lomax writes there was said to be one verse of the song for every mile from Texas to Montana (say, 800 miles as the crow flies, and cattle ain't crows.) Lomax collected hundreds of verses of which, he writes, only about 40 were fit to print.

"At the end of the trail, the red liquor flowed freely; eager crimson-clad floozies and patooties swarmed for his attention. The complete "Chisholm Trail" frankly sets forth the gory details of these and other encounters far less innocent, in short, grim Anglo-Saxon words that are still rightfully excluded from the mails. But they are a part of the history of the times, and the record is carefully preserved." Folk Song: U.S.A., 1947, p247.
