Saddleworth Festival 2005

Subject: Saddleworth Festival
From: Alio

Are any Mudcatters coming to Saddleworth? The festival is from July 15 - 17th, and we've got a good line up hopefully. Can't do a blue clicky thing, but the website is www.safra.org.

If you are coming, I'll be in the Festival Office - and mine's a Jamieson's!!

Is it possible to attend & just pay for camping?, as we'd only want to be attending the fringe activities such as sesshes & sinarounds.

I'll definitely be there. I'm running the "FOLK ON THE INTERNET" workshops again, and I'll be around singing with FIRM FRIENDS.

Yay me!

I've been recruited on Bar/Catering duties, but they won't keep me there all day!
I'll be out and about at some point!
Hope the weather behaves this year (although where I am now it's raining cats and wotsits!), shoes were almost lost in the ever present mud on the campsite last year!

The sinarounds sound alluring. Are last year's top turn Cara appearing this year?

Thanks for the web link Mr Happy - and yes, of course you can come and camp without having to buy tickets. Our campsite is brill - very attractive, and well sorth a visit!

Cara won't be appearing this year, but I'll definitely be booking them again in the future as I thought they were great, and they worked so hard! But we have got 2 groups of very talented young musicians - Heyfeva and Kerfuffle.

Don't sell out of Jamieson's before I get some Muppet!

Chris Harvey and myself will be back by popular demand - or so Alio says and I believe her - doing another workshop on the songs of Harry Boardman in the Commercial Hotel on the Saturday afternoon

This year we will be including some of the "Manchester Ballads" that Harry used to sing as well as some that he didn't! "The new tune - or rather the ORIGINAL tune - to "The Calico Printer's Clerk" is proving very popular with audiences wherever we've sung it so please come along and have a listen and a sing.

Cheers

My workshop's on building a traditional song repertoire and source singers, more participative this year so I need old and young "thy praises sung_____" fill in the missing?

It's a cracking festival, we've been to everyone so far and always had a brilliant time, however we got festival burn out and are taking a year (at least) out, with the exception of the Whitby and thats onyl because we have a caravan there. I'm sure Ali will manage without me and Christine to talk to, it'll give her more time for supping Jamieson's !

I shall be there sometime on Friday afternoon,(armed with every posible type of anti- mossy treatment). Hoping that the weather will prove kind but it is St Swithins Day.

Fi-in-nz, although, obviously, I introduce people to Mudcat during the workshop, it is only a very small part of what is now available on the internet.

The reason why I split the workshops
- dealing primarily with SONGS in one and TUNES in the other -
is that it had become impossible to deal with both aspects of folk on the internet in one hour.

If you want more info, I'm not difficult to find, someone will point you in my direction.

Nice little place is Saddleworth, geared up for tourism normally being high in the Pennines not far from Holmfirth/Huddersfield and Oldham

Approachable over the bleak/notorious Saddleworth moor, M62 or I believe A62 from Huddersfield.

Lovely village with pubs and clubs and food

but this weekend also music and dancing in the streets and various venues

Worth a look?

No rain this weekend - I have it on good authority!

What's up with Jamieson's? I was given a bottle last night to keep me going through the festival!

Off to the campsite now - some have already arrived. If you are in Saddleworth this evening, we'll be putting the signs up and then heading for the Waggon, where Theresa (Tooley) is determined to get a singaround / session going.

Cheek - Lowden!!! (Although being of Scottish background, my ancestors would agree of course!!)

We did have a couple of problems with local youths on the campsite, although 90% of campers heard and saw nothing. Our stewards were fantastic, and did their best to ensure that the following nights went smoother. We know that other festivals have encountered the same problems, so if you know of anyone who has found anything that works, please tell us! We're definitely open to ideas and suggestions!

Apart from that, the weekend was just so brill; it was by far our biggest to date, and I've met so many lovely people! The artists were superb, especially Colcannon who tried to get to just about every event over the weekend, even the Survivors Session!!

Anyway, I'm resting now (and planning for 2006!!) Must be mad!

On way to recovery the drips should be removed tomorrow (joking of course)

Well what a weekend and the weather held out marvellous

Scowie in good form and Theresa Tooley!

Excellent singing in the Wagon and playing, very well attended

My workshop on collecting building a repertoire got to page 2 of 6 nicely participative (nice word)

How is Eileen can you keep us posted! (steward of Eileen and Maurice fame) not very well after an operation I think

Got to Manchester ballads just, I was running session in Wagon and they wouldn't let me leave I gave it to Jude Knight!! Many thanks to Stephen and Maggie from Denby Dale lovely input also Mick McGarry and Trim Rig and Doxy very strong singer/melodeon player

Interesting workshop on Sydney Carter from Sylvia Needham

Colcannon were never off stage even at the Cross Keys, brilliant they went down a storm final concert

Pat Ryan and Ken Howard hadnt spoken to Pat for over 20 years altho seen from a distance and i dont get to Fylde very often caught up with them at the Museum and guess what Colcannon impromptu with em Pat more than ready for retiring from day job held her back from singing

Barrie and Ingrid go from strength to strength, so does the beer so sorry if I missed you you were probably buying me beer all weekend!

Marie Little sang as if her life depended upon it what an energetic performer, full of life and her very funny women's song she slays 'em

So Saddleworth next year put in yer diary!! Weather booked again

A suggestion that may work with the people who were causing trouble, if someone were to get photographs of them they may be able to work out that those photographs could then be handed to the Police and decide to bugger off and annoy someone else. I did this at Cleckheaton once with someone who looked to be casing the tents looking for something to pinch. When I took his photograph he asked why I had done so and I indicated that if anything went missing the photographs would be given to the Police as a starter, he dissappeared VERY quickly after that ........ can't think why!

Thanks for all the lovely messages - and for your idea Nick. I can't help but wonder why they're not missed from home as they were causing trouble from midnight till 4ish a.m!!

Anyway, it won't deter us from making plans for 2006 - and spending even more money on the campsite! The trouble is that as you spend more money, it's the campers who have to pick up the costs - very unfair.

Fi - glad you found us all really helpful - we do pride ourselves on that in Saddleworth.

looking into booking the Witches for next year - they're brill!! Lowden - I'm deciding which glass to take to the festival ready for you coming along with lots for me to drink!! Perhaps a pint glass?

Echoing Nutty's accolade above-

Thanks to Alio and all the committee.

Everything was perfect -   INCLUDING THE WEATHER!

In fact sometimes TOO HOT!!

So was thankful Sat afternoon to enjoy fab sinaround on shaded lawn of the conservative club.

Also Moor & Coast tent both nights late on & signing Ducks on Fri.

Good to see the poultry enjoying themselves!

Another suggestion that may work with the people who were causing trouble, have security staff patrolling the campsite.

I experienced these teams at Middlewich & Cleckheaton & no theft, vandalism or unruly behaviour was in evidence at all.

Thanks for that Mr Happy. We did in fact have security staff partrolling - the problem was that it's a very large site, and they heard nothing! Actually, the sound does not carry well on the site, which is why the majority of campers heard nothing at all! Next year we've already decided to have 2 security men patrolling it. Our stewards were wonderful - they offered to help out through the night. What stars!!

Sorry about the weather - we spent a lot of our budget trying to get it right this year!!!

NEWS RE 2006!!!!

Just in case you're thinking of coming next year, we've unfortunately had to move dates!!!!

Our dear friends at the Civic Hall - our main venue - have decided to let the Hall out for a wedding! They don't see us as "annual" as we've only been there 8 years!!

We put next year's dates in the programme as July 21st to 23rd - unfortunately that clashes with Warwick, which means that we couldn't have Moor and Coast or most of our wonderful stewards (plus probably loads of festival-goesrs).

So just for 1 year we're having a radically different date, which we know will still clash with some festivals, but then they all do, don't they? We're now having Saddleworth 2006 on the weekend of July 28th to 30th.

Our committee would be really grateful if you could pass the word around for us!!!

Love, Ali

They wouldn't even consider it - but with my "being fair" hat on, if I were the bride, and knowing nothing about any folk festival, I'd be pretty devastated if they came to me and asked / told me I had to change my wedding venue!

I couldn't do that to anyone!

Is anyone going to Saddleworth this coming weekend? I'm hoping to be there with a group of friends but we are wondering about the camp site. Do any locals know if it's ok or should we come in a boat?

There's a new thread Cindy - 10th Saddleworth. Sorry I can't do the blue line thingy - but it's live on Mudcat at the moment, with plenty of hits.

And the campsite should be fine, providing the weather stays like it is at the moment. It gets waterlogged very quicjkly, but then dries out just as quick. Come and join us! it's going to be a fantastic weekend.
