happy? - July 5 (SF longshoreman's strike)

Subject: happy? - July 5

In protest of severe & dangerous working conditions, a longshoreman's strike broke out in 1934 in San Francisco. It was violence-ridden; a number of workers were killed and many were injured.

        Four hundred strikers were brutally wounded;
        Four hundred workers and I left to die;
        Remember the day, sir, to all of your children,
        This bloody Thursday the fifth of July.

                "The Ballad of Bloody Thursday," Anon., per John Greenway's book,
                 American Folksongs of Protest; also sung on Folkways, The Unfortunate Rake
