09 Jul 05 - 02:53 AM (#1518721) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Colum Sands song about a mule From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Have a look at the song MULES in the DT (you can get to it quickly enough by using the DT Lyrics M Browse on the Forum page (ignore the double entries we're getting since the last crash). Packie Byrne used to sing what I remembered as a longer version, though it may have just been a lot of repeats. He also didn't use Old Lang Syne as the tune, which is what's stated in most places. 09 Jul 05 - 02:59 AM (#1518726) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Colum Sands song about a mule From: Peace "One-One was a racehorse. Two-Two was one, too. When One-One won one race, Two-Two won one, too." This was unattributed on the site I cut and pasted from. Looks like it could be done to the tune of "Stewball". |
09 Jul 05 - 04:33 AM (#1518770) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Colum Sands song about a mule From: Mick Pearce (MCP) The Miller's Daughter is one of the tunes listed for Old Lang Syne in Bruce Olson's site. I've had a look at a few tunes of that name from JC's tunefinder and they're not the tune Packie used to sing. Perhaps Bonnie will spot this and help out! Mick |
11 Jul 05 - 07:03 PM (#1520370) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Colum Sands song about a mule From: MoorleyMan Thread's creeping a bit here.... So getting back to the original request, Mick's right - I recall Colum saying he got the verses from Packie Byrne, but none of the usual Googling or song searches are able to turn up any reference to this one. Someone out there must know it? |
11 Jul 05 - 07:45 PM (#1520398) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Colum Sands song about a mule From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Not exactly creeping. All references (except possibly Peace's verse above) refer to versions of the right song. The trouble is I don't think I've heard Colum do it and it's so long since I heard Packie sing it that I don't know if the version in DT is all the words there are, and that Packie repeated them, or quite possibly Packie extended them himself. You can find versions all over the internet, but all more or less the same as DT - no more verses. The tune is I think universally stated as Auld Lang Syne (might be the curse of internet copying), and Peace's offering of The Miller's Daughter turns out to be a red herring as that's a tune for Auld Lang Syne. In the normal course of things I'd post the tune Packie used - which was certainly not Auld Lang Syne - but I can only remember bits of it. As far as I can tell Packie hasn't recorded it. Colum Sand's website has a discography with texts for all the songs, but sadly this isn't amongst them as far as I can see. Currently I pin my hopes on Bonnie. Mick |
12 Jul 05 - 01:57 PM (#1520644) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Colum Sands song about a mule From: MoorleyMan If this helps, Mick - I heard Colum sing it on more than one occasion, and the chorus is exactly as in DT but there are also three or four distinct verses, which are sung to the exact same tune and sort of develop the basic premise. Like yourself, I looked on Colum's website but since (a) he hasn't recorded it and (b) it's not one of his own compositions, it doesn't appear on there. The tune though - ah now there's a thing - it surely isn't Auld Lang Syne, it's more like a polka, one that's probably been used for any number of Irish folksong-derived or even music-hall-derived Oirish. Colum even "stage-lilts" the final line of the chorus! Try emailing Colum then? Or does Bonnie lie over the ocean too? |
12 Jul 05 - 06:04 PM (#1520870) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Colum Sands song about a mule From: Susanne (skw) I, too, have heard (and seen!) Colum do this several times. I remember the tune as a variant of "The man who waters the workers' beer", but my memory for tunes isn't too reliable. Slight amendment of chorus: A mule it has two feet behind before(?) two feet before don't stand behind before you find what the feet behind be for I work with close friend of Colum's who may remember more. I'll try to ask him before he goes off to Rostrevor in two weeks' time. |

28 Oct 06 - 11:44 PM (#1871079) Subject: Lyr Add: The Mule Song From: Susanne (skw) I know there was a thread about this not so very long ago, but I can't find it again, so here it is: THE MULE SONG (Trad / new words by Packie Manus Byrne) Chorus: For on mules you'll find two feet behind And two you'll find before You stand behind before you find What the feet behind be for If you're behind the feet behind You'll find what they be for So stand before the feet behind And behind the feet before Oh my name is Jack the Carter And I work around the town I have a strong and sturdy mule To pull my cart around But speaking from experience A tale I'll tell to you Never stand behind a mule For it's a dangerous thing to do A mule it is an animal Of very low degree It doesn't have a single branch Upon its family tree It's clever and it's stubborn And that is all because Its mother was a donkey and Its father was a horse And to conclude and finish My song comes to an end In spite of many tragedies That mule is still my friend But I must admit that o'er the years He's kicked me once or twice So I'll finish as I started With a piece of sound advice (Sung by Colum Sands to the tune of the first part of "Hot Ashfelt") Straight from the mule's mouth, so to speak - Colum Sands had a gig in my hometown two nights ago, and I got him to write the lyrics down for me and Mudcat.

30 Oct 06 - 06:30 AM (#1872042) Subject: RE: Lyr Req/ADD: The Mule Song (Colum Sands) From: Leadfingers As promised , as sung by my mate Dave Stephenson , colected from Hugh Diamond at Whittlebury , and ex Packie Byrne! A couple of extra verses - Sing them all , you'll be knackered ! Oh, me name is Jake the Carter and I work about the town, I have a strong and sturdy mule to pull me cart around, And speaking from experience, advice I'll give to you: Don't ever stand behind a mule, it's a dangerous thing to do; For on a mule you'll find two feet behind and two you'll find before; You'll stand behind before you find what the feet behind be for; If you stand behind the feet behind you'll find what they be for, So stand before the feet behind and behind the feet before. It was down in Camden Market, I was loadin' up some hay, The polisman said, 'Move your cart, you're blockin' up the way!', Well the mule he lifted his dainty leg and kicked him in the bum, And he landed in the gutter on the road to Kingdom Come; [chorus] It was on a Sunday morning when the Murphys came from Mass, The mule was grazin' on the lawn and croppin' all the grass, Well it's sad to say, the last I heard of Mr Murphy's wife, She was layin' in the hospital, a-strugglin' for her life; [chorus] Now to conclude and finish, my story now I'll end, And it's through all kinds of tragedies this mule's remained my friend; Though I must admit that through the years he's kicked me once or twice, So I'll finish as I started with this bit of self-advice: [last chorus - starting slow "on ... a ..." then very fast jig-like, then slow down to big finish on last line] |

01 Nov 06 - 05:00 PM (#1874179) Subject: RE: Lyr Req/ADD: The Mule Song (Colum Sands) From: Rowan Around this neck of the woods the song is sung to the Auld Lang Syne tune and the chorus appeared some 20 years ago on a CD of children's songs put out by Mike and Michelle Jackson. And another song (with only one verse I've ever heard), to the same tune, I learned in the 50s; The fish, it never cackles 'bout its million eggs or so; the hen is quite a diff'rent bird, one egg and hear her crow. The fish we spurn but prize the hen, which leads me to surmise, "Don't hide your light but blow your horn; it pays to advertise." Cheers, Rowan |
