Subject: 2005 FSGW Getaway--Information (edited)
From: Charlie Baum

This is the edited informational thread for the 2005 FSGW Getaway.

To make it easy for people to find the information they need, the thread is reserved for information, logistics and mechanics. Please try to keep chat in the other Getaway thread . If a posting here seems unrelated to the purpose of the thread, the Getaway editors may move it to the other thread.

The Registration Form for the 2005 Getaway is available on-line. It is in .pdf format. (If you need Acrobat Reader to read .pdf forms, the free Acrobat Reader program can be downloaded here.) Download it, print it out, fill it in, and send it by snail-mail with a check (in U.S. currency, unless other plans are made*) to Judy O[ppenheim], whose address is to be found on the bottom of the form. A description of the Getaway is also available in .pdf format.

Getaway of the Folklore Society of Greater Washington (FSGW)
Friday, October 14 to Monday, October 17, 2005
Camp Ramblewood, Darlington, Maryland (USA)

What is the Getaway?

For four decades, FSGW has held its Getaway weekend so that members and friends can share music, stories, crafts and dance in a relaxed camp setting.   The Getaway is:

  • Music-making under the trees, on the lawn, by the pond, or in a cabin;
  • Group singing and jamming at its best;
  • Informal workshops on singing, dancing, crafts and storytelling led by FSGW members and friends;
  • Trying a craft—quilting, basket-making, puppets, and mask-making have been highlights of past years;
  • Great food;
  • A terrific weekend for the whole family, with lots of special children's activities;
  • A chance to renew old friendships and make new ones;
  • A beautiful camp with modern facilities in scenic rolling hills adjacent to the Susquehanna River;
  • A wonderful chance for parents to introduce their kids to the magic of group singing and dancing—or to discover that magic for the first time themselves.

Dates and Times

This year's Getaway is scheduled at the height of Fall colors. Camp Ramblewood spreads out over rolling hillsides bordering the Susquehanna River just below the Conowingo Dam, north of Havre de Grace, Maryland. Camp Ramblewood is about 8 miles north of Exits 89 (Havre de Grace) or 93 (Port Deposit) of I-95. It's only 90 minutes North of the I-495 Beltway, in a direction far less subject to traffic jams than Virginia. You may choose to stay over either one, two, or three nights, or you may come for the day if you are unable to get away for the whole weekend. There is also the possibilty of coming for the day without meals. (You must register in advance if you wish to dine!)

The weekend starts Friday evening with a potluck dinner. If you register for two nights, your registration fee covers three meals and a midnight snack both days on Saturday and Sunday. Three-night registration gives you an additional night's lodging and breakfast on Monday morning. One-night registration gives you all meals and snacks on either Saturday or Sunday and, if you wish, a bed on either adjacent night.

Facilities

The dining hall, several common rooms, the pub, the drama barn, the dance barn (with a hardwood sprung floor), and the outdoor pavilion offer all-weather spaces for music making and dancing. NO SMOKING is allowed in any of the camp buildings.

If you choose to go to bed, there are more than 50 rooms, mostly in modern cabins. They feature indoor flush plumbing and hot showers; comfortable beds with box-spring mattresses (bring your own linens and bedding). The buildings are not centrally heated, but we may bring electric space heaters, as long as we don't overload the fuse capacity of any individual cabin. There are handicapped-accessible cabins with wheelchair-accessible bathrooms for those who need them; please indicate any special needs when you register. If you prefer to bring a tent or your own RV, you may do so, and camp on the grounds (no discounts, but you get guaranteed privacy!). If you don't want to sing, there's a pond with boats (and stocked with fish), tennis courts, ball fields, and a trail through the woods to the banks of the Susquehanna. The immediate area offers antiques, history and horse farms. (See more of Camp Ramblewood at its website: www.ramblewood.com )

Volunteer Help

We'll need volunteers to help set up on Friday, to welcome and register guests, to clean up after our Friday night potluck dinner, and to help make sure everything is in order when we check out. In advance, we can also use help with programming. If you're interested in leading a workshop, suggesting a workshop, or organizing and scheduling events suggested by others, let Carly (Gewirz) or (Rita) Ferrara know, or send an e-mail to getaway AT fsgw DOT org.

Fees

Getaway fees depend on whether you're an FSGW member or not, and whether you're an adult or a child. See the Registration Form for the fee that applies to you. Fees are determined by our actual costs to run this event—food, camp rental, etc. We try to keep them as low as possible while still allowing the event to cover its costs.

Getaway Activities at a Glance

Friday —
  • Check in any time after 4 pm.
  • Potluck dinner, with new foods added as each person arrives.
  • Song swap and music-making into the wee hours.

Saturday —
  • Informal music, dance, crafts and storytelling workshops all day.
  • Saturday night concert (sign up to tell a story, present a short skit, tune or song).
  • Singing and jamming together all night, as late as you care to stay (or stay up, if you're sleeping at camp).

Sunday —
  • Informal music, dance, crafts and storytelling workshops all day
  • Sunday night concert (sign up if you didn't participate on Saturday).
  • More singing and jamming after the concert, into the wee hours.

Monday —
  • Parting songs.
  • Farewell breakfast in the dining hall.

Special Guests

Every year, we invite some special guests to spark the music-making. Friends from all over the world who know about the Getaway through mudcat.org also show up. The programming committee will be announcing special guests later this summer.

Wonderful, Charlie, thanks!

I have been using an oil-filled radiator-type space heater to heat a space here at home that is a lot like the cabins in terms of heat/insulation, etc. The oil doesn't BURN-- it just gets heated up by an interior electric element, and there is no exposed flame or electric element at all. Our house is along the path some folks take to the Getaway; so if anyone wants to borrow the heater, I'd be glad to lend it.

Dear Charlie et al,

Patricia (Lady McMoo) and myself are currently thinking about coming across from Belgium to the Getaway and need to plan cheap flights etc.

The registration form is pretty straightforward. However, we plan to stay a couple of extra days for sightseeing as Patricia has never been to the USA. Are there any recommendations for cheap accomodation in the Greater Washington area or are there any FSGW members that might be prepared to put up two fully housetrained and polite European 'Catters (one fine bluesy singer and a multi-instrumentalist) for a couple of days?

Anyone able to help can PM me rather than posting here.

All best regards and thanks in advance for any information!

Peace

Forget the hair dryer; we'd just have to throw you back in the pond afterwards, so why bring it? I mean -- we can't have you going about in a dry teeshirt!

Announcing:

The Ducks plan to stop a few nights with us in North Central PA after the Getaway, on their way north from here. More are welcome to join the fun. (RSVP via PM) Those who stopped here last year reported being adequately fed, housed, and appreciated.

In another thread, one may find some of the DETAILS.

~Susan

Edited addendum added August 25, 3:10 p.m.:

Happily, it also looks like several folks plan on stopping with us on the way TO the Getaway. I'll post a "Pre/Post-Getaway" thread with more info and a place to register to participate, when we get back into town post-vacay (mid-September). In the meantime, Mmario knows our setup; I'd suggest people can PM him with any questions if you PM me and get no reply.

This Central Texan has already reserved coach train fare to D.C. There are a couple of folks there I want to see for 2-3 days before or after Getaway. Then plan to rent car and go to Darlington and Ramblewood. I've already sent in out-of-area membership to FSGW. Bring my own bedding, towels. What are the cheapest motels in the area?. Hubby can't come, but we've sold the "old" howse, so some funds avail. Not tons. Any tips much appreciated.      Tw.

cheapest in "the area"?...Near D.C., or near the Getaway? Lots of area, lots of motels....like Motel 6, etc. A search on motels near where you want to be can usually give you many options.

Is there anywhere en route from New York to Getaway where we can buy sleeping bags cheaply? Taking our own from here would take up too much room. Walmart or similar would probably do it.

Mrs. Duck--some would say that the entire state of New Jersey is one huge shopping mall (Not entirely true.) After that, you will pass through Delaware, which bills itself as "home of tax-free shopping" because the state levies no sales tax (which is between 4 and 6 percent in most other states).

There are Wal-Marts in New Castle, DE, Elkton, Md and NorthEast, MD. (You can get specific addresses and diving directions from www.walmart.com).

Theere's also a Dick's Sporting Goods next to the Christiana (Delaware) Mall, just off (Delaware)exit 4 of I-95, about 25 miles before the exit for the Getaway.

If you are coming in and out of New York like Colin you could always borrow sleeping bags from us and return them at the end of your trip. With six of us in the house there is a variety of options available.... Or drive down with Colin and I and have a shopping guide. After 17 years in New Jersey I've almost adopted the shop til you drop motto... BG

I hope the FSGW folks who DON'T come on the 'cat are aware of how much we appreciate their sharing their Getaway with us. While I certainly enjoy the meeting and sharing with other mudcatters I find myself looking forward to meeting and sharing with the FSGW folks as much - or even more - since I don't get to talk with them through the year.

The occasional puzzled look from people - and I heard last year "Oh - don't worry about that - it's a mudcat thing..." being said to one mystified person.

Those of you who've brought kids, can you tell me a little about how sleeping options have worked?

My girls are 11 and almost-15. They are coming along for the adventure, but not sure what they are in for ; )

I've always stayed with the Mudchicks in a late-night situation.

Your thoughts on best accommodations for/with children?

Is there a draft description of the various workshops and who if anyone is coordinating them? Or is this something that we pick up as we parachute in?

I believe there was a link somewhere to one from 2004 but there are an awful lot of posts to wade through. Last year's might provide some idea of the range of activities.

Looks like Barry and Justine will be van-pooling with me. We should have a great time navigating to Maryland: "Hard starboard", "Oh, shit, we're all aback!", "Scandalize the skiff!"

Last year some kind soul set a heater to running in our bathroom. It helped, even though with two un-doored entrances it didn't help all that much.

Heaters in other rooms, unless they were right at one's feet, would help hardly at all. There ain't no glass in them there winder holes.

I just had a bright idea- today I'm taking the bus to our Outdoor Outfitters and I'm getting a couple of heat seats, and maybe some hand warmers. Ooooo weeee, bring it on!

BillD-

Thanks for the clarification!

Actually I could do a workshop on Gurage work songs, for transplanting false banana trees. I recorded some of them when I was in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia, back in the Pleistocene, but when I asked my students what they were actually singing they replied, "Sir, they're not singing the right words. They're being very rude!"

Maybe I better stick with traditional sea shanties such as "Wake Up, Susianna," ones that everyone knows

'cybergibberish' is not a very technical term...*grin*...it is just a .pdf file, which you would read and print with Adobe Acrobat....no one else has mentioned a problem.

Celtaddict:

The gibberish was PostScript code which was visible because you were viewing the file with a text reader of some sort. If you save the file to your hard drive as "Reg.pdf" and then open it using Adobe Acrobat, it will look normal. You need to print it and fill it in and mail it physically. (If you have Acrobat Pro you CAN force it to be filled in electronically, but it is a pain in the zorch to do it.)

I was waiting for some money to squeak in. New old car, new computer, and a check that got re-routed to the Post Office in the Twilight Zone.
Now, to figure out how I can afford heat this winter. Burning dollar bills in the fireplace might be cheaper than heating oil or electricity.

If anyone had wondered about me, my reg is away. (How much you wanna bet stamps go up to $1.00 soon?)

I need to plan how to avoid NYC.

I can't find the thread or post that recently had a tentative workshop list--I think Nancy King posted it. If it wasn't to this thread, it probably should be moved to here.

Janie, look up at the top for "2005 Getaway Program Information" - I just added it. I think the program is probably a big enough topic to deserve it's own thread and provide a place for discussion. This thread's more of a notice board, an edited one at that.

just a note...for just in case. The address and phone for the camp is:

Ramblewood
2564 Silver Road
Darlington, MD 21034
1-800-466-CAMP
1-800-466-2267

it might be good those traveling from afar to copy this and keep it with you. If for any reason anyone gets lost, delayed, missed or bewildered, call the camp and we will see what we can do to rescue you!
