Portpatrick 2005

I've heard rumblings that Portpatrick Festival (02 to 04 Sept) may be in doubt and cannot find details of the 2005 programme on line.

Does anyone know the background?

We had great weekends there the last few years and Failte at the Crown Hotel finished the evenings off nicely!

Would appreciate information from those more in the know than I am.

Cheers

I've just received the 'Gael Force 2005'(groan!) Summer Music programme from Dumfries and Galloway Council and it's not listed. I did some MC'ing there in 2003 when Julie Felix, North Sea Gas, Anthony John Clarke, Tref & Vicki Williams plus the late Sean Maguire were on the bill and I felt then, the budget had been well and truly rolled out that year - to little avail. In other words, it was poorly attended and must've lost a packet. Last year, things were pared down to a minimum and this year - nothing?
Shame 'cos it's a fabulous location but it must be said the venues are a tad limited. Main stage is the village hall for example and I guess that other towns with more extensive facilities have put their hands up saying "please sir, me sir" and the Council has placed its limited funds elsewhere.
Maybe they're just having a year off in the 'port? It's come and gone before. (thinks, must go back soon anyway - lovely spot)

Thanks Clive

We were there and saw Julie Felix that year and heard Sean on the Sunday I think. It would be a shame if it was allowed to die - it is a great location and the morning sessions on the Saturday are so ad hoc it's real fun just moving from one to the other and taking it all in. We're going down anyway and will post details if I can find any more info.

Thanks again

More info on Portpatrick Festival

Still going down. It is the informality which helped make Portpatrick and hopefully with good support it still continue.

Just returned from Portpatrick and again it was great. Failte were great both Friday and Saturday but poarticularly on Saturday. They may bew coming over to Girvan next year so look out for them if they do. The festival was a bit quiter this year (as it was technically unofficial) but it was by no means a failure.

Apparently the issue is that the Stranraer Folk Club used to help organise and publicise but it was decided about two years ago that it would be handled locally. It would appear that local committee interest has waned which is unfortunate.

Let's hope next year they can get back on track with a full programme and some "headline" acts to draw even more audience and musicians to the area.

To those who did support this year, thank you. We will be back next year!!!

I'll watch for news and post if I get any. Alternatively, if there is anyone from Stranraer Folk Club on Mudcat, could they keep us updated as to developments?

Shame - I spent a few days in the Stranraer and D&G areas last week and heard nowt about a Portpatrick festival, informal or otherwise. All my efforts to find even one session to go to anywhere during the week had drawn a complete blank. The D&G tourist board had up to a couple of years ago produced a leaflet guide to local music sessions and events, but even the website searches threw up no results this time.
So I'd echo the plea for local Catters to keep threads going and keep us all informed re stuff happening on their respective patches. It works so well for some areas of the country, so why not for others? Is it just a dearth of Catters in these areas, or is there really no music out there?

Does anyone know if there is anything planned for this year? It's usually the first weekend in September which would be the First to Third.

Can't find anything listed. As mentioned before, it would be a shame if it died.

Thanks for any assistance

We were at Girven a fortnight ago and talking to a few from Stranraer
It's on to the extent that we are going again this year. we think it's a great festival and even if it is cancelled a lot of musicians and singers will still go.

Howdo out there,

The Portpatrick Folk Festival is ON this year, (2006) from the 1st to the 3rd of September.

Organisation has been, how shall we say, a bit lacking, hence no one knowing if it was on or not.

I know, because I have to do the website for it and I've only just received the info 3 weeks before it starts!

In a few days you should get more info at:

www.portpatrickfolkfestival.org

Hope this answers yer questions!
