18 Jul 05 - 11:11 AM (#1523269) Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Nude From: JohnInKansas Tunick has been doing this all over the world for several years. Do a Google image search on the name, and you'll probably find his own home page. He used to have some really high-res .jpgs of his "art" posted, but it's been quite a while since I looked him up. It's really kind of "old-hat" by now. The Brits should be insulted that it took him so long to get to them. John |

18 Jul 05 - 01:28 PM (#1523391) Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Nude From: JohnInKansas BPL - Just a joke, I think. He's done this in at least a dozen countries. I believe that includes several separate "events" in the US. One might suppose he didn't think naked Brits would be as "artsy" as all those others who went before? Or maybe he thought his "work" wouldn't accepted there - and was afraid? When I first heard of him, I would have assumed he'd have gone where people had the most beautiful naked bodies - but having seen some of his work I'm quite sure that's not among his criteria. It looks more like it's wherever he can get by with it and can gather enough "sponsors." Maybe he just ran out of gullible fools in the less civilized countries and decided to "try the harder ones." 18 Jul 05 - 01:34 PM (#1523396) Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Nude From: McGrath of Harlow Here'Guardian story, complete with unaphrodisiac picture. I'm puzzled by how he manages to persuade all these people to do it. I mean, I'd be terrified someone would knick my trousers while I was off parading around. Mayber that's theey next stage in this kind of performance - thousands of people milling around trying to find what's hapened to their clothes, which are on a lorry heading South... And then there's all the complication of sorting people out by colour to make some kind of picture - I mean with hair colour it'd be tricky enough, but it could turn nasty when it came to skin colour: "If you have a tan or tattoos please go to the back. And you with the pink or blue hair, I don't think we'll have you in this one." Three people with fluorescent locks slipped out of the shot. From a distance, the mass of bodies, mostly white at the centre and pink at their edges, looked like a big dish of maggots. (From that Guardian story) |

18 Jul 05 - 01:48 PM (#1523410) Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Nude From: frogprince I feel sorry for them that they didn't regard it as sexual As Bill Clinton might have said, "It all depends on what your definition of 'sexual' is.." mass nudity is such a turnoff It all depends on what your definition of 'turnoff' is. We've gone to nude resorts and beaches with some regularity for 20 years now. I'm not gonna try to tell anyone my eyes don't pick out the more comely looking "lasses"; if my wife noticed that they didn't, she would probably get worried and consider rushing me to (the) hospital. But I think only the odd guy, who is starved for what I'm definitely not starved for, finds himself tripping over his own tongue (or bumping into doors with anything else before he can reach the handle). So much of the appeal is simply that I can't imagine a more relaxed way to spend a warm day. I've learned to be comfortable with the fact that nudity can have everything to do with sex, or nothing to do with sex. For myself, I think that posing in on one of Tunick's picures would be a "hoot", with little or no sexual aspect. |

19 Jul 05 - 11:02 AM (#1523991) Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Nude From: M.Ted There is a very interesting documentary about a couple of his shoots in NYC--one in Times Square, the other at a gas station--at the time, he didn't have permits, so it had to be staged as a sort of guerilla project--move in, block the streets, subjects stripped, layed out in the streets, with Tunick directing and trying to shoot and get people out before the cops arrived-- The images of hundreds of nude bodies, lying in an otherwise empty Times Square are definately disturbing--holocaust-like- |

20 Jul 05 - 10:25 AM (#1524210) Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Nude From: Little Hawk This is a very cool thing, and it's not disturbing at all. There IS nothing sexual about hundreds and hundreds of people being nude all at the same time in public, nothing whatsoever...but what there is, is this: a liberation from one of our most common artificially mentally conditioned fears...the fear OF being unclothed in the presence of others. No wonder many people who participated in the event said that they felt liberated by the experience. I bet they did. They will be far less emotionally constrained within themselves for having had that experience. Why would nudity necessarily have to do with sexuality? It only would in a society where people are deathly afraid of being nude in front of others, and have to confine it only to certain sensual or extremely private circumstances. People who are afraid to show their bodies are also afraid to show their thoughts. Such people are living in an emotional cage of their own making, and it's a pretty small cage. Cages are for prisoners, not free people. Hurrah for Newcastle! I hope they do it around here soon. |

20 Jul 05 - 01:49 PM (#1524453) Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Nude From: frogprince Somebody explain to me the origen of the idea that anyone could be harmed by the sight of a human body, in and of itself. If anyone is actually traumitized by simple nudity, It would only be because they have been so deeply indoctrinated in that regard. (No, I don't personally "flash", "streak", or otherwise inflict nudity on people, apart from just a couple of occasions of mooning friends who I knew would just laugh it off. ) (If that sounds like a serious rant...nah, not really). |

21 Jul 05 - 09:56 PM (#1525291) Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Nude From: Liz the Squeak Frogprince - it's in Genesis but I can't quote verses.... "They saw that they were naked and were ashamed" Nudity is all very well but sometimes it's just common sense and decency to cover up... when ironing or using a skillet/frying pan for instance or when it looks like you're wearing a body suit 14 sizes too big.... LTS |
|
22 Jul 05 - 01:11 PM (#1525439) Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Nude From: frogprince Oh, I knows the verse, Liz; but the Big Boss never orders them to cover up. What you've got here is a couple of people who, for the first time, have something to be ashamed of (diobedience). The guilt and shame contaminates their attitudes, and they get up tight about being nekkid. (But no, I don't take the story literally). Nor do I try to do arc welding nekkid; but swimming is sure the heck more comfortable that way when ya got the option. |

22 Jul 05 - 06:38 PM (#1525759) Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Nude From: Little Hawk Yeah. That's what's so cool about clothes. And, of course, they keep you warm and protected from the weather conditions. Liz - I think that the passage in Genesis refers not to physical nakedness, but being naked in their thoughts. Their inmost thoughts (of good and evil) were revealed. That's a far more frightening and embarassing situation in many cases than merely being physically naked in front of others. "If my thought-dreams could be seen, they'd probably put my head in a guillotine" - Bob Dylan (if his body were seen, they'd just giggle and point...) |
