From: Azizi I recently received this email from a visitor to my Cocojams' website: "Anyone, I am trying to find a Blind Blake c.d. for my Dad , who grew up in the Bahamas and now lives in upstate NY. He listened to his music for most of his life. I can't seem to find anything on c.d. and the records are all scratched up, so it would be impossible to play. Does anyone know where I can find a cassette or a c.d. of Blind Blake's Bahamian music? Thank you" -snip- I have forwarded to this person the contact information for Dick Greenhaus' Camsco Records. From: lamarca Azizi, I've gotten copies of most of the Blind Blake and the Royal Bahamian Orchestra LPs on ebay, all of them in quite playable condition. There was a CD of some of his work called "Goombay Rock", but it's out of print, and I've not been able to find a copy of it... To search ebay, I just put "Blind Blake" and "calypso" - that eliminated all of the other Blind Blake blues records... |

In fact it came up at our local round-robin club Sunday night. Both, and Blind Lemon, were brilliant innovaters, tremendously influential, relatively unknown (the Happy! file has no date of birth or death for any of them) and too few recordings. Seeking more info, my summary (just to put them together) is: Blind Blake: (Born Arthur Phelps or Arthur Blake, aka Blind Arthur) born early 1890's – d1933. Birthplace: Jackson, Florida. (BlueFlame) Blind Blake—the mystery man of the blues. We know he was born Arthur Phelps, in Jacksonville, FL circa 1890- something and died sometime in 1933 (And in 1937). He disappeared from the blues scene in Chicago, 1932, where he was considered the undisputed 'King of the String', and had recorded over eighty solo sides for Paramount. [from blues pages at Mudcat 7/00] Blind Blake (from the Bahamas)(born Blake Alfonso Higgs - (he went blind in 1934)) A GROUP OF BAHAMIAN SONGS By "Blind Blake" and the Royal Victoria Hotel "Calypsos" - ART Records (ALP-3) recorded in the Bahamas Copyright 1951. But I really goofed by putting Blind Lemon Jefferson in the mix too. I mean it's bad [good?} enough that there were two Blind Blakes.But then I went and created a Blind Lemon Blake... Maybe my punishment should be that I have to listen for an hour to music I can't stand-like really really bad polka or really really bad country/western or really really bad rap. Please no! I don't wanna listen to any polka-country/western-rap! I promise I'll be good. I promise I'll be more careful. I'll even use the preview feature..... at least some of the time. |

Most of the time such names were given by promoters or record company executives. It shows much more respect to some of my favorite folk musicians to refer to them by their real names: John Hurt, Fred McDowell, Willie McTell (origionally McTier), Gary Davis, etc. |

Of course, it doesn't help with Blind Blake. :-) At allmusic.com (pretty good info & getting better) you see the two him with a choice of Blues (ok) and Reggae (!). But the brief article is ok. You see the phrase: "The calypso Blind Blake (use it sort of like 'Country Johnny Mathis')" Hmmm. I see from the blues Blind Blake article that he recorded far more than I thought. And if you look at other bios, you often see that an appelation was won in childhood or self chosen to honor another artist. Eg, Sonny Boy Williamson #2 (for Aleck Miller, who was already known as "Rice" Miller.) Then there's also the total failure of monikers: If you're looking for a Gary Davis record, you might look (and I have found) him under: Gary Davis Davis, Gary Rev. Gary Davis Rev.
