Blind Blake (Bahamas) CDs???

18 Jul 05 - 03:23 PM (#1523504)
Subject: Blind Blake CDs???
From: Azizi

I recently received this email from a visitor to my Cocojams' website:

"Anyone, I am trying to find a Blind Blake c.d. for my Dad , who grew up in the Bahamas and now lives in upstate NY. He listened to his music for most of his life. I can't seem to find anything on c.d. and the records are all scratched up, so it would be impossible to play. Does anyone know where I can find a cassette or a c.d. of Blind Blake's Bahamian music? Thank you"

-snip-

I have forwarded to this person the contact information for Dick Greenhaus' Camsco Records. Is there any other information or resources that I could share with her?

Thanks,

Azizi

The CDs you cite are Arthur Blake, an American blues singer.

The Bahamian singer is a different person.

I'm also sorry for my BIG mistake.

I really blew that one. Blind Lemon Jefferson and Blind Blake are two different artist.

I have to remember to check out the Mudcat Search & Knowledge box before I post anything like this.

See this thread: Blind Blake Calypso Singer

Azizi, I've gotten copies of most of the Blind Blake and the Royal Bahamian Orchestra LPs on ebay, all of them in quite playable condition. There was a CD of some of his work called "Goombay Rock", but it's out of print, and I've not been able to find a copy of it... To search ebay, I just put "Blind Blake" and "calypso" - that eliminated all of the other Blind Blake blues records...

Azizi: you definitely need the Beginners Guide to Blind nicknames!
As I asked in a Sidmouth Festival Radio 2 folk quiz in c 1980:
who is the odd man out?
Blind Willie Walker
Blind Willy Purvis
Blind Willy Johnson.

When you can answer this, you're ready to rock.
(like all "odd man out" questions, there can be more than one right answer).

That may be a sly attempt by greg stephens to change the subject to a discussion of Eddie Lang.

pdq: I love discussing Eddie Lang, but I did not include the name of Blind Willy Dunn in the previous post. Though I have to say, I did include him in the original 1980 Simouth question. I just forgot him, ten minutes ago. Anyway, now you've dragged him into the discussion, I do think he was the greatest guitar accompanist ever.

Ha! Greg, I confess I'd flunk that quiz.

Well, I guess I have to go back to Blues school. Remember waaay back in February 2005 when I asked for help in learning more about the Blues in this thread?

http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=78209

Here's a comment that Amos posted in that thread:

"And now, Azizi's feelin' the blues!!! :D

No harm done, ma'am -- we all get het up once or twice around here, and usually for wrong reasons we have to backpedal all over. Par fer the course!"

-snip-

Actually I don't remember what mistake I made that time. But I know I've made several since then.

I wonder if Google can help me figure out who those artists in your quiz are?

Or is that cheating??

As to Blind Blake, Bahamian singer/songwriter, there is a website where all his recordings can be downloaded if paid for. I have them all, but not the website address, so go searching

Eddie Land had the huge pleasure in life of being the preferred accompanist of Joe Venuti, Lonnie Johnson, Bing Crosby and Biz Beiderbecke. What a wonderful variety of musical experience!

Azizi,

Confusing Blind Blake and Blind Blake is pretty standard. In fact it came up at our local round-robin club Sunday night. Both, and Blind Lemon, were brilliant innovaters, tremendously influential, relatively unknown (the Happy! file has no date of birth or death for any of them) and too few recordings. Seeking more info, my summary (just to put them together) is:

Blind Blake: (Born Arthur Phelps or Arthur Blake, aka Blind Arthur) born early 1890's – d1933. Birthplace: Jackson, Florida. (BlueFlame)

Blind Blake—the mystery man of the blues. We know he was born Arthur Phelps, in Jacksonville, FL circa 1890- something and died sometime in 1933 (And in 1937). He disappeared from the blues scene in Chicago, 1932, where he was considered the undisputed 'King of the String', and had recorded over eighty solo sides for Paramount. [from blues pages at Mudcat 7/00]

Blind Blake (from the Bahamas)(born Blake Alfonso Higgs - (he went blind in 1934)) A GROUP OF BAHAMIAN SONGS By "Blind Blake" and the Royal Victoria Hotel "Calypsos" - ART Records (ALP-3) recorded in the Bahamas Copyright 1951. Discography at http://www.wirz.de/music/blakbfrm.htm

Higgs further confuses us by having written "Yass, Yass, Yass" which we usually think of as a USian blues piece, made most famous by Dave van Ronk who got most of his style & many of his songs from Blind Gary Davis.

Thanks, Abby.

You made me feel slightly better about my mixing those the two Blind Blakes up. But I really goofed by putting Blind Lemon Jefferson in the mix too.

I mean it's bad [good?} enough that there were two Blind Blakes. But then I went and created a Blind Lemon Blake...

Maybe my punishment should be that I have to listen for an hour to music I can't stand-like really really bad polka or really really bad country/western or really really bad rap.

Please no! I don't wanna listen to any polka-country/western-rap!

I promise I'll be good. I promise I'll be more careful. I'll even use the preview feature.....

at least some of the time.

Greg, it's probably Blind Willy Purvis, the Geordie character, but if you really want to be clever then Blind Willie Walker.

High lonesome or honky-tonk rap with inept accordion backing and electronic sampling?
It's sorta fun to mix and match blues names.

(thread creep...)The late, beloved DC musician Davie Olive occasionally performed under the name "Blind Harry Palms"... guess he wasn't able to stop in time.

I am not a fan of "cheap" nicknames like "Blind" or "Mississippi". Most of the time such names were given by promoters or record company executives.

It shows much more respect to some of my favorite folk musicians to refer to them by their real names: John Hurt, Fred McDowell, Willie McTell (origionally McTier), Gary Davis, etc.

pdq: Maybe so, but also these are often handy to distinguish them from other "John Smiths." Of course, it doesn't help with Blind Blake. :-) At allmusic.com (pretty good info & getting better) you see the two him with a choice of Blues (ok) and Reggae (!). But the brief article is ok. You see the phrase: "The calypso Blind Blake (use it sort of like 'Country Johnny Mathis')"   Hmmm. I see from the blues Blind Blake article that he recorded far more than I thought.

And if you look at other bios, you often see that an appelation was won in childhood or self chosen to honor another artist. Eg, Sonny Boy Williamson #2 (for Aleck Miller, who was already known as "Rice" Miller.)

Then there's also the total failure of monikers: If you're looking for a Gary Davis record, you might look (and I have found) him under:

Gary Davis
Davis, Gary
Rev. Gary Davis
Rev. Davis, Gary
Davis, Rev. Gary
Blind Gary Davis
Blind Davis, Gary
Davis, Blind Gary

Steve "Brain-damaged But Still Hangin' In There" Earle
