Large schools of squid move in at the Newfoundland coast during August, September, and October, and fishermen pull them in with line and jigger. The Holyrood, Newfoundland Squid Fest, (erstwhile, the Squid Jigging Festival) is now held the last week of July, 7/23-7/31 in 2005. Info at Holyrood events

Oh, this is the place where the fishermen gather
With oil-skins and boots and Cape Anns battened down
All sizes of figures with squid lines and jiggers
They congregate here on the squid-jiggin' ground.

"The Squid-Jiggin' Ground" was written by Dr. Arthur R. Scammell in his home
town of Change Islands (in Notre Dame Bay on the Island of Newfoundland) at
age fifteen. He died 8/28/1995 at age 82. You wouldn't be far wrong to call
                it the 'Newfie National Anthem.'

F.Y.I., Newf. fishing regulation #11: "It is illegal to jig fish in inland waters. Accidentally foulhooked fish must be released."

'Course, they're not fish, are they, invertebrates as they are...

And here I always thought "I'se the B'y" was the Newfie National Anthem.
