Lyr Req: When the Bloom Is on the Sage

Another query from the "Ole Man", my dad: he's grateful for the lyrics I found here for the Preacher & the Bear.

He's now wondering if anyone knows the words to the later (1930/40's) version of "When it's roundup time in Texas"?

Thanks in advance. Kat

Kat Laughing--
The song "When its Roundup Time in Texas" begins
'When its roundup time in Texas
And the bloom is on the sage,
How I long to be in Texas
Just a-ridin' on the range.'
While I cannot remember the whole song, just fragments, I beleve the song ends--
'Just to be again, to be free again
Where [when (?)]the bloom is on the sage.'
Maybe the title is "Where the Bloom is on the Sage".

Incidentally, the tune for this song was used by the sponsor of the TOM MIX radio show in the late '40s. It started--
'Shredded Ralston for your breakfast
Starts the day out shiney bright,'
That product is today known as Wheat Chex. Just thought I'd throw that in for free. Maybe somebody as old as I can complete the jingle.

Happy New Year!

You guys are terrific! Thanks so MUCH! I will finish posting my thank yous, then call Dad with the good news. Thanks, again. John, I'm pretty sure he'll be able to remember the jingle and will post it if so. Thanks for the "freebie!" kat

One more time! Called dad and he said the words which Gene sent in were the older version. The words which John Hindsill remember are the version he is interested in.

I searched the database using "bloom, sage" and other phrases John remembered, but nothing came up.

Any other ideas? Thanks, Katlaughing

Here's a little more, Kat

Correct title: WHEN THE BLOOM IS ON THE SAGE

One of the writers was that venerable writer of cowboy music &/or lyrics, who also wrote I'M AN OLD COWHAND... Johnny Mercer.

Sorry, could not find lyrics, but maybe an old-fashioned BOOK of his songs from a library or music store might help.

Keep up the good search.

John & Gene,

You guys are great. Anytime is fine, Gene. I won't send a packet of lyrics out to dad for a few days, yet. I did find Little Bell Brandon at Levy's but couldn't read it, so will email them for more.

This has really made my dad's day. He takes such pleasure in his music and is such a grand resource himself, being a real, live old time cowboy and all.

I really can't thank you all enough! But, I'll try. Mmmmm...somebody was wanting to add to the mousie story I started earlier...maybe a poem I wrote about "Flies at the Transmitter" would suffice? Nah....I need to add to that...there's barely enough for one verse. Well, I'll have to see what else I can come up with.

In the meantime, I am

a Kat Laughing (with joy in such simple and easily attainable pleasures as pleasing an old man who is so precious to me!)

Jim Bob Tinsley tells in his book 'For A Cowboy Has To Sing' how the song was written in 1930, during a radio broadcast of the Blue Monday Jamboree over KFRC in San Francisco, California when a rich Texan called in and offered $250 if Nat and Fred could write a song and play it before the show ended ... they did! and as Paul Harvey is fond of saying... Now you know the rest of the story....

WHEN THE BLOOM IS ON THE SAGE
Writers: Nat Vincent and Fred Howard

To most folks, there's a spot that lives forever
Deep down within their fondest memory
Though I have been a rover, I have never
Seen any place where I would rather be.

When it's roundup time in Texas And the bloom is on the sage
Then I long to be in Texas Back a-ridin' on the range
Just to smell the bacon fryin' When it's sizzlin' in the pan
Hear the breakfast horn in the early morn Drinkin' coffee from a can.

Just a-ridin', rockin', ropin', Poundin' leather all day long,
Just a-swayin', sweatin', swearin' Listen to a cowboy's song
How it beckons, and I reckon I would work for any wage
To be free again, just to be again Where the bloom is on the sage.

When it's roundup time in Texas And the bloom is on the sage
Then I long to be in Texas Back a-ridin' on the range
Where the purple hills are callin' Callin' to me from afar
To come back again to the Rio Grande And the lonely Texas star.

How I'm longin' to be livin' Where the prairie flowers grow
I'd be willin' to start walkin' To the land that I love so
How it beckons, and I reckon I would work for any wage
To be free again, just to be again Where the bloom is on the sage.

A great song!

Here's my recollection of that song from many years ago:

When it's roundup time in Texas, and the bloom is on the sage
Then I long to be in Texas, back a-ridin' on the range
Just to smell that bacon cookin', sizzlin' in the frying pan
Then a cup of hot black coffee, and you've got a happy man.

Just a-ridin', ropin', ramblin'-- pounding leather all day long,
Then we gather 'round the campfire, and we sing a cowboy song
How it beckons, and I reckon, I would work for any wage
Just to be again, and feel free again, when the bloom is on the sage.
