there ARE no Ebdim and G9+ chords in 'folk music' *grin*

chico, you gotta realize...most people, especially folkies, don't just 'have' the chords to pop songs of the 30s & 40s laying around. You found one nice guy who was smart enough to do a clever search, but it's kinda bad form to sound like you're demanding that someone here supply you with stuff that is usually not even discussed here....OK?

ferchrissakes, he only asked and said "please," even ... where's the demand in that?

"Toot Toot Tootsie" might fit nicely in a set by Leon Redbone, for example ... and there are more than a few "folkies" who like his music. He's probably playing some Ebdim and G9+ chords once in a while too ...

A lot of folks who hang around here play this music, Bill--and, generally, if know them, I post the chords, because they are a bit harder to figure out than most folksong chords--

Here are the ones that I use for the chorus(except I do it in Bb)--no one has done the verse since Al Jolson ;-) Play two downstrokes per chord when there are two chords in a measure, and one per chord when there are four--oh, and my chords will work better than the ones at the link above, though the G9 augmented is a nice touch, if you feel inclined to stick one in for the second count of G7--if you don't know how to play C# diminished, use A7--

Toot,Toot,Tootsie,Goodbye!
(Chords to the Chorus)

||C C/D7D7/G7 G7/C C/
C C#°/Dm7 G7/Dm7 G7/C A7 D7 G7/
C C/D7 D7/G7 G7/ C7 C7/
F F/F F/C C/C C/
C C/D7 D7/G7 G7/C C||

Two reasons why i requested this:

One is the passage of time. Time enobles anything, including pop songs, which are now standards are while not pure folk, have been made 'pure' by surviving this long. This song is now acceptable to me when it wouldn't have been in 1922.

Second reason is I am readying an enormous batch of US Campaign Political Songs and one of them uses this tune, but I didn't have the chords for it. That's the real reason, not to play the tootsie song.

There are tons of old songs like this which the older folks in the nursing homes all around would appreciate singing along with. This song is one always says "play your uke!!" to me.

You can find this & lots of other old songs at the Levy Sheet Music Collection. Go the the following site, click on search. In the first box that says 'search', type in "Tootsie" or the whole title, and choose "title" in the next box that says 'within'. There are 3 renditions of it, but it's in Eb. A great key for me, accorian players & the Beatles to sing in, but most 'traditional' players don't like it.

BTW

I used a D13b5b9 in one of the songs I do along with the odd 9th chord, diminished and augmented. First started playing rock then got 'into' jazz for a bit (a short bit) then 'found' folkie-kinda stuff and decided that was where it's at. There is noting more difficult about jazz chords than folk chords, IMO. Ya let yer fingers do the walkin' . . . .

It may be bad form to "pile on" once a point has already been made, but I'm going to chide Bill D anyway for coming down so hard on Chico, who is not only a relatively new member, but who has made MANY contributions of songs, almost always including chords.

Older American Tin-Pan-Alley songs like "Tootsie," not unlike British "music hall" songs, can certainly be a legitimate part of a singer's "folk" repertoire, especially someone with a bent towards ragtime, which is certainly a time-honored subgenre of "folk" guitar fingerpicking.

BillD is one of the gems on the 'cat. Chico is a good guy, too. We all get those days, ya know--I've never had any of them myself, but some crochety ol' buggers get 'em now and then, I understand that. Bill covered it with "well, at least he can say he was not 'ignored' ;>)" and Chico covered it back with his July 26, 11:19 post. Things is cool. Hope y'all have a good day out there.

Yeah, I'm familar with Bill D and have always liked him, so I didn't mean to get personal about this.

But I couldn't resist the urge to make my point that a song like this is NOT out of place here (and also to express my appreciation of Chico).

Bill notes that he has been chided,(and spoke up for) *grin* and that he can't control stuff in a forum like this...

He also notes that he has fervently wished for nearly 10 years now that ONE tiny little island could be reserved for traditional folk and it's near relatives. (9+ years ago, Mudcat was tiny). I know that many people are more eclectic in their tastes than I, and I sorta envy them, but I still wish there were similar forums for pop music, rock music..etc....otr that Mudcat had parallel forums that you could click on as you enter for some of the other types of music.

Sorry, chico....I am aware that you are a good guy, but being "enobled" by time doesn't change tin pan alley to folk any more than putting ice cream on sauerkraut makes it 'dessert' *big grin*

I end with a repost of a story I haven't used in several years...

"there was an old Mutt & Jeff cartoon...Li'l Jeff is on his hands & knees under a streetlight, and Mutt asks him what he is doing...Jeff says "I lost a silver dollar" Mutt gets down and helps him look for awhile...then asks "Are you sure you lost it around here?" ..."No", says Jeff,"I lost it down in the middle of the block"..."Then why are you looking HERE?", asks Mutt...."Oh", says Jeff, "the light's much better here."

so...carry on, I will take my chided self back into the shadows ...until another wave of purist snobbery overtakes me at some future time

At some point in time, songs that started out as "popular" or even "commercial" have indeed "become" folk music. The oldest and most traditional songs we know of were once new, after all. Their composers were probably even known! But I do understand the point of view that a mere century or less isn't a long enough gestation period for everyone's taste.

Pop songs can "become" jazz much more quickly, as can be seen by the many "standards" found in Fake Books. John Coltrane created his immortal version of "My Favorite Things" no more than about a decade after the song was written as a Broadway Show Tune.

Assume that once upon a time there WAS a tiny little island reserved for traditional folk. Certain possibilities spring to mind-- just fun images to play with:

Scenario 1: The tourists arrived. Soon the island was too crowded for the trad folk-- who, unable to evolve fast enough, were pushed off into the sea and were drowned.

Scenario 2: Having become inbred in their exclusivity, the trad folk all died off (after constructing their own monument). The last years of their existence were particularly perverted, as they became like the savages they supplanted.

Scenario 3: The Law tries to capture representative specimens annually at the Getaway for genetic testing to assure an abundant supply of replacement trad folk can be abducted and taken to said island.

Scenario 5: Each year the island's trad folk take a vacation, together, at the FSGW, but (probably shocked by the goings-on) they retreat to their island habitat as soon as they possibly can, from which they can communicate only by internet.

Scenario 6: The missionaries arrived. The inhabitants tried to teach them the missionary position, but in so doing they exposed themselves to virulent fevers, and died soon thereafter.

Scenario 7: The missionaries arrived and began proselytizing, but the trad folk converted them, instead, digitally.

Secenario 8: The trad folk split into two warring camps, the "what is folk" camp and the "we know what is folk" camp. Causlaties were about equal as the males of the species killed off one another in a particularly violent pissing contest.

(Bill, I'm hoping for #7, but history, human nature, and the medium are agin it.)

*Bill slinks back out of the shadows to reply to being tweaked*

Scenario 9: There is a BIG island found nearby for the tourists, with Disney-like rides and canned music which is re-written and re-covered every two weeks to fulfill the need for constant change, while the dull old 'trad' folkies sit on their porches on their tiny island with sagging docks and no "Top 40" to tell them what is popular.....and smile as the occasional sound from their neighbors wafts across the water.

(you know, PoppaGator....it is true that "The oldest and most traditional songs we know of were once new,..."...but they weren't new in quite the same way songs are new now. There is a LOT more that makes a song fit the notion of folk/trad than age and/or fame. Style, subject matter, tune type,etc...etc.. maybe a dozen characteristics, depending on how you count, are just as relevant to determine a category...and of course some little buggers are kinda slippery in the middle. But we ALL know that "Barbary Allen" and "Sweet Betsy from Pike" are different from "Purple People Eaters" and "Rock Around the Clock"...and yes, from "Toot, Toot Tootsie", neat as that song is. Once you have asked yourself just how they all differ, you'll be able to use categories in a REALLY meaningful manner, rather than somehow assuming that all the songs you 'like' must eventually be lumped together, just because "the light is better down here"....*grin*)

I repeat, for maybe the 20th time....in order for a category to be useful and meaningful, it MUST not be so broad as to encompass almost everything. You don't do Gregorian Chant at a Bluegrass festival, and Dixieland Jazz fanatics can tell if you try to slip Reggae into their mix. 'Taint a matter of 'bad' or 'good'...just of keeping some semblance of clarity about it all..

Bile the ribs. Cool the ribs. Marinate them in sauerkraut for a minimum six to eight hours. Use the BBQ sauce you like and put the ribs on a grill/barbeque, etc. (Cook 'em.) Eat 'em. They're good. Really good.

Even though I may have started (or at least contributed to) this controversy by "chiding" Bill, I've gotta tell you that I really do lean towards his point of view ~ or at least, I feel no need to denigrate his viewpoint. Certainly, there have to be general definitions of categories if we are to be able to communicate with each other at all.

I just don't expect this forum to be restricted to discussion of only that music that fits anyone's relatively narrow definition of Folk Music. There has to be room for all of us and all of our interests; no one has to read every thread, any more than anyone is obligated to agree with everyone else about anything.

If you're not interested in a subject, it's easy enough to just skip over it. And if you ARE interested in a given subject or question, start a thread! Don't wait for someone else to do so, and then complain that no one wants to discuss the things in which you're interested.

Just because I have no knowledge of, or interest in, say, Morris Dancing, I wouldn't think of telling anyone that they shouldn't be allowed to discuss their interests here. Same for songwriting: whatever our many songwriters are doing, even those who successfully emulate traditional styles, it's by definition contemporary and NOT traditional ~ but so what?

For that matter, ALL music is immediately contemporary insofar as it exists only in the fleeting moment. You can sing the oldest song you know, it's still YOU, alive today, recreating the song as best as you know how, based upon something you heard and learned during the last few decades, i.e., during your modern-day lifetime.

Indeed, the way we hear, learn, pass along, and "folk-process" songs nowadays (and forevermore into the future) is radially different than it ever could possibly have been over the centuries prior to the invention of recording media. Every individual certainly has the right to his/her own tastes and preferences, but now that we're in the age of instant worldwide communication, "traditional" is just another category, no matter how strictly defined.

Second reason is I am readying an enormous batch of US Campaign Political Songs

My personal archives include one small booklet:

True Blue Republican Campaign Songs for 1888
S. Brainard's Sons, Chicago

I haven't scanned the songs for archive, but my OCR of the index shows:

Grover's Veto
When Grover Goes Marching Home
Turn the Rascals Out
Political Barber Shop
On the Louisiana Plan
Democratic Boat
Vacant Chair
All on Account of the Mugwumps
Glory, Glory, Hallelujah
Marching Through Georgia
Star Spangled Banner
Tramp, Tramp, Tramp
Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean
America
Hold the Fort

If any of these are the era of interest and would be helpful, PM an email addy and I could probably get a few scanned fairly soon. Since they're not a personal area of interest I probably won't do a digital archive unless someone's interested.

John

Not to make points over again -- as to Chico and Bill D's points, I gotta admit, with Billy Martin in the beer commercial, "I feel strongly both ways."

I will only say that I, who was fatally imbued with popsongs at a prerational age (Toot Toot Tootsie was among them, as well as Five Foot Two, Put Your Shoes On Lucy, etc....) that, being an old purist crank myself, I have come to Digitrad over and over looking for ~rock bottom traditional~ ballads and songs as rigorously pure as time has left them, and I count on Digitrad for that.

But, oddly enough, I have also come to Digitrad pantin' to find various weird old pop songs I love that have slipped through the cracks everywhere else--not on Lester Levy, not on American Memory, not on the various lyrics sites either--and I have found those here as well.

I'm glad of both, and I don't think the fact that DT is a repository of some old fun pop stuff makes it any less the wonderful TRADITIONAL source it primarily is.

Thanks, guys, for both.

TOOT, TOOT, TOOTSIE (GOO' BYE)
Words and music by Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman and Dan Russo
New York: Leo. Feist, Inc., 1922.
"Al. Jolson's big hit in 'Bombo'"

1. Yesterday I heard a lover sigh,
"Good-bye, oh me, oh my!"
Seven times he got aboard his train,
And seven times he hurried back to kiss his love again, and tell her:

CHORUS: "Toot, toot, Tootsie, Goo' Bye!
Toot, toot, Tootsie, don't cry.
The choo-choo train that takes me
Away from you no words can tell how sad it makes me.
Kiss me, Tootsie, and then,
Do it over again.
Watch for the mail.
I'll never fail.
If you don't get a letter then you'll know I'm in jail.
Tut, tut, Tootsie, don't cry.
Toot, toot, Tootsie, Goo' Bye!"

2. When somebody says goodbye to me,
I'm sad as I can be.
Not so with this loving Romeo.
He seemed to take a lot of pleasure saying bye-bye to his treasure: CHORUS
