If you are, and a resident of North Yorkshire in the UK, you are in for a real treat when Steve plays The Bandroom, a tiny venue on the North York Moors on 9 September. The capacity is only 100 so it will be virtually like having him play for you in your front room. Steve is pretty much solo these days, occasionally accompanied by Marc Stuart (husband of Stacey Earle who in turn is the sister of Steve), though those of you who are trying to remember where you heard his name before may recall he used to have a full band behind him for his hits, Goin' Down To Laurel and Romeo's tune. That was back in the late 70s and his song writing ability is even stronger since then. For those who really don't know Steve, his music is a mix of folk, rock, blues and country and his lyrics are of the wry observational kind. I'm not a promoter, just a fan who can't believe that one of his favourite musicians is going to play so close and in such an intimate setting. I could be selfish and keep this knowledge to myself but it might lack a little atmosphere if there was just me and him. Ticket information is available at www. thebandroom.co.uk but if you're going to go, you'd better hurry as there are no more than 98 tickets remaining - I got the other two. Don't rely on The Bandroom's website to tell you about the gig, they update it very rarely, but ring the phone number for tickets and they'll tell you all about it. www.ents24.com will also conform the date. Glad this has sparked your interest Skipjack and you have got your mitts on some tickets - or, you will have when they get round to printing them. The dates are now on Steveforbert.com which is a mine of info. I have been catching up on all the music I have missed since the last album of his I bought 10 years ago. Particularly recommended are Mission of The Crossroad Palms (1995) and Just Like There's Nothin To It (2004. It is likely that we will be able to meet our hero. I hope I don't gibber and say something stupid like "your stuff's quite like Bob Dylan, isn't it?" (which it isn't). He'll be solo without a band because,frankly, despite it's name, you couldn't fit a band on the stage of the Band Room! The only way you could get a band in is to remove the audience. Sir John, good to hear from you. The CD was only 4 quid actually. Do go to the Box of Goats thread (it's off the front page at the moment but look it up) and there is a link to my web page where the latest offering from Nick and I (as Box of Goats) can be downloaded for free. I played it last year and you bought my CD on the strength of it although that particular song wasn't on the CD. Well, now you can hear it again (Struck Twice By Lightning). |

I just came back from seeing Steve perform here in Saint John tonite .... I was greatly impressed ... he certainly has matured into a musician, poet, songwriter, singer that should not go unrecognized. He is simply outstanding. He played solo. Marc Stuart did not accompany him. It was just Steve, an old Gibson and his harmonica rack. He played just short of 2 hours but I could easily have listened to him for another 2 hours. Songs that he sang that are worth mentioning are: Starstruck (the Ray Davies song) Good Planets are Hard to Find YellowBird (he did an absolutely beautiful verion of that) Miss the Mississippi and you (my favourite) I have never been a fan of Romeio's Tune but tonite with just him playing solo it shone. As I mentioned you will not be disappointed and it will certainly be a treat. If you haven't bough tickets I suggest you should. sIx |

The villages of Gillamoor and Fadmoor, a handful of miles away, have good pubs which may do accommodation. Kirkbymoorside, Pickering and Helmsley are the next options, there are a good few places in Helmsley. The Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge may do accommodation and that would be a spectacular place to stay as it is about 3 miles from the gig and right on the moor. Sorry I can't be more specific. By the way, The Bandroom is not licensed (ha! we're lucky it's even got ELECTRICITY) but you can bring your own booze, although being in the middle of nowhere puts a damper on that as we will all have to drive. He was a powerful stage presence, and gave a performance that was much bigger than for 100 people in a corrugated iron shed in the middle of an incredibly beautiful nowhere. I hope Beast will be able to provide details of songs sung. I don't know any of his later material, and I really enjoyed having it revealed. The man has a fine way of crafting lyrics. I was in the cheap seats, and the inevitable Glaswegian drunks were doing a double act of one heckling (in a positive way) and the other threatening to punch his colleague's lights out for talking duirng a song. Steve did an hour and three-quarters straight, with no break, two encores (I suspect there would've been colateral damage to corrugated iron had he not, and then we went home, so I don't know if there was any more excitement post-show. A lovely evening, and I've yet to watch the DVD that seems to be a 25 year anthology. |

You did not introduce yourself Skipjack so I'm afraid I had to assume that you were one of the heckling drunks! ;-) Steve came out to sign stuff and chat after the show. I managed to give him one of my CDs. I know that's supposed to be the other way round, but I've bought most of his so I thought it was only fair. He said he'd listen to it! I went after that as even if there were to be a later opportunity to speak to him, there was a healthy queue behind me and it would have been a long wait. I thought the audience was a bit too subdued and Steve did brilliantly to engage us. I was standing off to the left of the seating area, leaning against the wall, and I felt he was singing just for me most of the time. The DVD is excellent by the way. Lots of archive footage and interviews where Steve goes "Um...er...well... I dunno....". Why he is not huge I don't know. Let's hope he is back next year.... How was The Lion Inn? |

All we lacked was Brian Glover and Rik Mayall. A rather charming American gentleman appeared to be attempting the first coast to coast walk, and was making it doubly difficult for himself by drinking a pint of our British Bitter for every mile walked. Whilst I did some rapid maths and hoped he split his 24 daily pints into luncthime and evening, the clever-clogs landlord shot him down with a predictable 'everyone does that' response. The room was redolent of Tweedy's Chicken Farm of Chicken Run fame, with a very small window looking out at the pigeons' excercise yard. The bed was uncomfortable and creaky, and Mrs S awoke in a fouler humour than the night previous. The views of mist were stunning, and we had to rub on some of Oaklet's 'After Fog'. The breakfast was superb, and after I managed to get someone else's supper taken off our bill, we departed for Lastingham and then Ampleforth on a culture vulture tour, with a tight-lipped Mrs S for company. So yes, it was a good call, and even more fodder for the autobiography. Sorry, Beast, but I did look round for the Fender T shirt. We were immediately the other side of the drunks, agin the wall. |

There are several recent ones available from Steveforbert.com. 'Good Soul Food' is the most recent and most representative of what he is currently doing. It has Mark Stuart on it providing guitar backup though I don't think that adds much to it. From recent interviews and his DVD, he says he would like to be huge but is happy with his lot. He wouldn't complain at being better known and sell more records either though. What is clear is that he has to work very hard to maintain and build his following - I doubt he really made a fortune though. |

I guess it's up to people like us to spread the word of Steve in forums such as this and to people in our community. He certainly does deserve more praise and recognition. All said, considering the record industry these days, they certainly do not reflect 'good talent'. Good point on whether he did make a forune back then. I am aware he had his disagreements with the 'record company', and it is quite possible they did rip him off (which they did to so many others) in the long run. Skipjack ... I think the cananization of Sir JOhn would be appropriate and well deserving. Hull would most certainly benefit from having their very own Pope or Perp. sIx |

So in the intervening three years or so he had to regroup and start again. He also says that if you had told him then that he would be doing what he is doing now, that is playing a LOT of gigs and making records to a fairly small fan base, he'd have been happy with that. He doesn't miss the trappings of rock n roll,like a band, not least becAUse it is very expensive. His last studio album Just Like There's Nothin To It is an absolute PEACH - everyone should own it but it just doesn't get promoted. |
