In my mudcat beer recipe I use 1part hops to two parts grain.
For the holiday brew I replace hops with hemp leaves.
For the premium brew I replace hemp with northern lights buds.

CarolC -

Start|Programs|Accessories|Command Prompt on most recent Windows.

You can, as an alternative, click Start|Run and type "Command" (without quotes) and hit Enter.

You'll get a "DOS Window" in either case. You should type "Exit" and hit enter to close the window when you're done, rather than just clicking the X, especially in older Win versions.

You can make it stay on your screen if you set the options in DOS windows to not close the windows on exit.

Pauline:

"Hops" is internet=speak for the number of different computers a message has to go through to get from source to receipt. The mechanism of the internet is such that it can vary with many different paths being taken even by parts of one message.

Some programs will list out and count all the waystations for you.

Here's a sample:

Macusers under OS X can use the Network Utility (/Applications/Utilities) and then use the Traceroute tool -- just enter the www address or IP address of interest.

Mac users on OS 9 or earlier have to find such a utility of which there are several in the freeware world .

One thing that is interesting to note is the timings (for 3 samples) shown on Amos' sample. I'd never looked closely at them before but when looking reaslised they can not be the times it takes from one hop to the next - add all the ms times up. They also can't be accumilated times as if you look trough them, you will find the times decrease sometimes.

I've just looked up how traceroute works. It sends out ICPM requests (think ping) with a small TTL (time to live). This is sort of like a counter that decreases each hop and a server usualy replies with an error when you've run out of hops. Traceroute relies of these error messages.

As far as I can make out that timings shown on tracerout are full timings from your computer to that point on the network. Also you could simulate some of what tracerout does using ping, eg, ping www.mudcat.org -t 1, ping www.mudcat.org -t2, etc.

What is the significance of "time out"?

07 Aug 05 - 05:54 AM (#1536776)
Subject: RE: BS: How many hops to mudcat?
From: Amos

IF a ping is sent to a target machine, but no auto-response is received back within a certain time, it is said to have "timed out" indicating the target host is not answering.
