02 Aug 05 - 10:07 AM (#1533325) Subject: happy? - Aug 2 (Henry Martyn) From: Abby Sale * Chapter 1) The Portuguese plunder John Barton's merchant ship in 1476, Chapter 2) James IV grants "letters of reprisal" to Barton's three sons, of whom Henry becomes the captain. Henry becomes, in effect, an admiral of the Scots navy. Chapter 3) After happily plundering the Portuguese for a while, Henry seems to think it's a good idea to go after the Flemish. Chapter 4) When James IV comes to have a tiff with Henry VIII,Henry Barton "independently & coincidentally" goes after English ships. Chapter 5) Henry VIII indirectly (through a 3rd party - he's not actually at war with Scotland, you see) has 3 ships sent after Barton (without his brothers on board this trip) On 8/2/1511: They (A) kill him at sea in battle and: (B) capture & send him to London where he is hanged and: (C) kill him at sea but send his head back to England for display.
