If people want to access our website then I am afraid it appears to have gone, which is a bit of a pity really. I am trying to work out why but in the meantime, if you need to contact me please pm me. |

04 Aug 05 - 12:48 AM (#1534593) Subject: RE: Hissyfit website mysteriously disappears From: mack/misophist Your host seems to be Easy Space. I'd guess that either their server is down or they pulled the site for some reason. Ask them. You have paid the rent, haven't you? |

Exactly the same thing happened to harriWatts band website "now you see it now you don't" and we have never seen it since. You can turn it back on now - I wont tell |
04 Aug 05 - 03:49 AM (#1534640) Subject: RE: Hissyfit website mysteriously disappears From: Rasener Linda Read the information below carefully - i'll only say it once :-) I think your problem lies here. Cheers Les Error 404 information The most common reason for this is that the link pulling up the pages/pictures is addressed incorrectly. A common way of incorrectly addressing the link is to build the site on the home computer where the pictures are kept in a directory of the hard drive. Then, when it is uploaded the links are still addressed to a directory of the hard drive. The easiest way of finding out where the link is addresses to is to right click on the empty box or the 404 field and then select "Properties". You will then be shown the address of the link. If this starts "c:/....." Then it is still addressed to a directory on your hard drive. So obviously you need to change this to the address of the image on the web site. The other way that this can be addressed incorrectly is that either the directory or the page/image file in the address is spelled incorrectly or does not exist. It may sound very basic but the pages/images do have to be loaded onto the site and at the location you are specifying them to be at. It is always worth checking this as it is often the problem. So, for example, if you had a web site called www.easyzone.net and you are linking to a page file called "images.html" contained in a directory on the web site called "pages" then the address then the link would look like: www.easyzone.net/pages/images.html The images are missing because the path to them is incorrect |
04 Aug 05 - 04:32 PM (#1535116) Subject: RE: Hissyfit website mysteriously disappears From: Linda Kelly thanks for the help guys -it was all, well.... useless really! I have contacted easyspace whom I have paid by the way, and flung myself on their mercy. When the website has been restored I will expect you to put abusive comments in the guestbook espescially Les (Villan)since he would normally make them to my face and I think he needs a change!!! |

05 Aug 05 - 12:14 AM (#1535407) Subject: RE: Hissyfit website mysteriously disappears From: mack/misophist After reading the 404 notice more carefully, I suspect the Villan is right. If / isn't there, then either there's nothing there or your pathnames are wrong. |
05 Aug 05 - 12:29 AM (#1535410) Subject: RE: Hissyfit website mysteriously disappears From: Amos Can't be that -- the error is not that the index page or home page appears without its images but that the entire website is 404ing on the EasyWeb servers; also, if I understand it right, it WAS there and now is not. Even if the image pathnames had been left local in error, this would not have gone down this way. It appears to me more likely that EasyWeb cooked their DNS server and failed to re-generate it correctly. Just a guess. A |
05 Aug 05 - 12:39 AM (#1535418) Subject: RE: Hissyfit website mysteriously disappears From: Malcolm Douglas Joe found a cache of the page at Google, therefore it was in place a week or two back. Pathnames probably aren't the problem unless they have been changed since then. After owner error, the most usual cause of vanishing webpages is host error. Try to access the site via ftp, which you presumably used to put the page(s) up in the first place. Can you access the site that way? If not, then it may well have been lost by "easyspace". The link to their "setup and troubleshooting guide" doesn't work either, incidentally, so I suspect maintenance problems on their server. |
05 Aug 05 - 02:08 AM (#1535432) Subject: RE: Hissyfit website mysteriously disappears From: Rasener The plot thickens. I only posted the 404 help info as this is normally the first port of call and where most errors occur. However Amos & Malcolm have valid points. It is normal though to clear the obvious errors first before getting deeper. That way you know it can't be the simple ones causing the error. e.g. My printer isn't working, what are you going to do about it? Have you checked to see that all cables are connected properly and that the power is switched on? No, but it can't be that. Can you please check the cables and power switch. If it isn't that we will check other things that could be wrong. Hang on I will check. Bugger, somehow the power is turned off - must have been the cat. Sorry to have taken up your precious time. oooh i do feel an idiot. :-) Cheers Les LOL |
05 Aug 05 - 06:57 AM (#1535519) Subject: RE: Hissyfit website mysteriously disappears From: GUEST If you have ftp access couldn't you just re-upload your back up local copy of the site? Especially in light of their terms and conditions - "Data stored on our servers is not guaranteed to be backed up. It is recommended that you keep an independent backup of important data." |
05 Aug 05 - 11:42 AM (#1535678) Subject: RE: Hissyfit website mysteriously disappears From: Stephen R. Malcolm is right (as ususal): I think the problem is with the host. The 404 page has a link to easyspace.custhelp, and I couldn't access that either. Stephen |

05 Aug 05 - 05:53 PM (#1535982) Subject: RE: Hissyfit website mysteriously disappears From: Linda Kelly I think the ftp route is the best idea. Easyspace have not come back to me yet. The site was definitely there a wee ago I check regularly. Will come back if I find out anything. |
