Peter Buchan was born August 4, 1790 in Peterhead, Scotland (d Sept. 19, 1854) His collections & publications made up a formidable 37 of Child's "A" texts and his unpublished bawdy collection, Secret Songs of Silence is even more interesting. The Secret Songs manuscript and other material were smuggled out of Scotland by William Macmath (1844-1921) "for Prof. Child's ballad researches, and was deposited in the Harvard library in 1880.." The plunder has never been returned. Still at Harvard. High time Scotland made some strong protest & effort to regain one of its national treasures.
