Check this out. My town in all its glory. Majorly cool, eh? This is the town where Gordon Lightfoot grew up, by the way...

This is Orillia, eh?

Oh. What you have to do is click on the "Photo Gallery" box. Then work your way through the photos. We have a terrific opera house here, where I have seen shows by Ian Tyson, Sylvia Tyson, Gord Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, Loreen McKennitt, and numerous other such fine performers. Oh, and I've played there too the odd time in one event or another, plus a couple of stage plays.

Wasn't Orillia the setting for Leacock's fictional town of Mariposa in Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town?

Yes, bobad. The Orillia Folk Society used to meet regularly here, at the beautiful Stephen Leacock Memorial Home on Lake Couchiching in Orillia.

I remember playing at the Opera House too, LH, as a little kid, for the Kiwanis Festival ... but what I loved best about Orillia was that Dairy Queen right around the corner! Used to serve hot fudge marshmallow sundaes. Whatever happened to hot fudge marshmallow sundaes anyway?

I think they were outlawed by the Correct Diet Act of 1987 sponsored by the Political Correctness and Human Control Society of Orillia, founded by one Mrs. Grundy, an emnittered widow whose farmer husband ran away with a secretary from the Youth Christian Organization who was twenty years his junior.

A great loss to all teenage romances throughout the nation.

I've been going out with people 20 years my junior lately. It has its good points, but can be tiring, so you have to use your judgement rather carefully. Mind you, women in their 40's can be even more tiring. It all depends. ;-)

You can still get hot fudge marshmallow sundaes, I think, just not at that same place. There's a big turnover in businesses in the downtown.

Boy, all those McGill porta-potties in one place!!! What an awesome sight. It's like the elephants' graveyard or something. It just takes your breath away...

6 - Yes, Weber's Hamburger joint is still there, still attracting unbelievable hordes of customers. They built a big enclosed footbridge over the highway, just so the southbound people can park on their own side and cross over!

And that's why I never eat there. Too friggin' many other customers lined up ahead of you! It's insane. I can't figure why anyone eats there.

Subject: RE: BS: The Glories of Orillia! Eh?
From: Ebbie

NOBODY goes there- it's too crowded, eh, Little Hawk?

Seeing those potties reminds me of of my street earlier this summer. The entire street was torn up and rebuilt and in order to serve their construction workers, the company set up a portapotty on the sidewalk at the edge of my yard. All well and good.

Then I discovered that tourists that ventured this far up the hill were also using it! They must have blessed this town for its sensitivity. The potty is long gone; I have no idea what the tourists are using now.

Subject: RE: BS: The Glories of Orillia! Eh?
From: Little Hawk

So true, Ebbie. I don't know anyone who eats at Weber's. (grin) But there seem to be thousands of tourists (probably Americans) who are willing to line up for 45 minutes to get a hamburger and some fries...

They figure if that many people are already lined up, then the food must be INCREDIBLE, right? And after standing in line for 20 minutes, they've invested too much time to give up and leave (the Vietnam syndrome)! So they stay. And stay. And stay. Finally they get to eat a greasy hamburger and fries. They have to figure it's better than any other burger and fries...because they waited so long for it.

Fascinating how people's minds work!

Ha! But it's true... and here's another of Orillia's claims to fame . The town Joanne MacIver claimed she lived in during a past life as Susan Ganier was none other than Orillia! Turned the place a bit of a hotspot for 'psychic investigators' from the Edgar Cayce foundation etc for several years after the book was released. In fact, to this very day Orillia STILL seems to attract more than it's fair share of psychos    *ahem!*    psychics!

Hey, you have to be in an "altered state" just to live in Orillia, eh?

Some years ago a local prankster/vandal painted a large "G" in front of all the road signs leading into town, thus transforming the place into "Gorillia". Chongo was quite offended about it. He doesn't generally like gorillas much.

Well if you grew up in barrie, you learned to skate. Guaranteed. And probably how to build an icehut too. And how to prevent dying of boredom and/or frostbite while you sit in it for hours and HOURS and HOURS watching this stupid jig jig go up and down, up and down, up and down ....

Good ole Barrie. When they asked Neil Young what he thought when he was asked to headline the Live 8 concert here a few weeks ago, he said "Barrie? Well, at first I thought they said "Live BAIT!"

BTW did anyone else see Neil's performance that day? Just curious ... cuz I have a musical critique to offer about it if you did ....

Oops I got that wrong. You don't watch the stupid jig go up and down, up and down, up and down ... you watch the beer bottles go up and down, up and down, up and down. While keeping your eyeballs GLUED to the stupid jig just in CASE it MIGHT start going up and down, up and down, up and down too. But don't get all excited now! That hardly ever happens. And if it does it means you gotta bite ... maybe even hooked the spectaculous infamous Kempenfelt Kelly!

Sorry about the confusion. It's been a long time .... haven't been in an icehut since the divorce!

Orillia has icehuts. While I was staying near Orillia for part of one winter, I remember watching the rental ice huts being towed behind snowmobiles along the canals to get to the lake. It was kind of beautiful in a very odd sort of way.

Barrie ... sacred ground for me ... I was born there ... it was were I spent the primary days of my youth ... and yup, you did learn to skate there .... I remember when I was around 11 years old me and my friends would skate at night across Kempenfelt Bay, past the fishing huts, underneath those clear starry skies to an old train Steam Engine grave yard .. we played on those old relics of a bygone year, then skated back.

Nope ... didn't see Neil at Live 8, but I heard he played a Taylor 410 there, caused quite an uproar with the Martin fans.

Kempenfelt Bay is a pretty neat place. But...Orillia has 2 (count 'em!), 2 lakes!

If Neil wants to play a Taylor, let him, I say. Some Taylors are great guitars.

10 Aug 05 - 10:03 AM (#1539409)
Subject: RE: BS: The Glories of Orillia! Eh?
From: *daylia*

I didn't brave the crowds at Molson Park that day. Watched the live telecast instead, and I didn't even notice Neil was playing a Taylor (shame on me!). I LOVED that he chose to open with Ian Tyson's "Four Strong Winds" though, and his wife did a lovely job with the harmonies - just took a minute or two for that Moxied, moshed-up rapped-up crowd to get into vintage Canadian folkie mode. There was a lot of awkward shuffling in front of the stage at first. Then he went to the piano and crooned out his brand new "When God Made Me", accompanied by a choir from California. That literally brought tears to my eyes ... (oooooo Neil now I know why I always loved you Neil!)

But when all the artists gathered on stage to join in with the grande finale "Rockin in the Free World" (which he dedicated to all us Ontari-arians) - well, did anyone else hear that?!? All went well till the final chorus - and then I think the guitarists started missing a chord change! INstead of going back to the G at the beginning of the line "keep on rockin in the free world", I swear they were holding the E minor. It sounded like doo-doo! That line is repeated umpteen times and the performers were glancing at each other nervously not knowing what was wrong .... and some of them had even stopped playing/singing thinking (or wishing!) the song was over.

I was just mortified .... oh puh-leeeze guys, this is in front of the WHOLE WORLD eh? GET IT RIGHT!!!!! But Neil was such a good sport - when the final chord sounded (they did get the sequence right finally) he was just dancing across that stage laughing his head off!

ANyway, I'm sure I'm right about that chord change, but none of the reviews I've read even mentioned it. What, the snarly ole critics were being kind for once?!? Or maybe my ears had a glitch that day? JUst wondered if anyone else heard it, so we could compare 'notes'!

sIx, your post got me all misty-eyed! We used to skate across the bay as little kids too - but my best memories are a few years later, walking across it at night with my boyfriend, under those sparkling stars, with the golden lights of the city splashing across the ice at our feet --- so romantic! Those trainyards are still there, but the CN station has been closed for years now and they've cleaned the area up alot. One of the old engines was repainted and made into a "monument" at Centennial Park. Remember Centennial Park?

I think you'll LOVE this painting - Big Fun on Kempenfelt Bay. See the old City Hall in the background? I set it as a desktop background - looks kinda surreal!

I think you'll enjoy this bit of nostalgia too ... bet you can find your old school/church/favourite parks there.

And LH, ok Orillia is blessed with 2 beautiful lakes - Couchiching and Simcoe (Kempenfelt Bay is one "finger" of the latter) - BUT .... Kempenfelt Bay is the deepest part of Lake Simcoe - over 100' in places - and therefore has the VERY BIGGEST AND BESTEST whitefish around (if you can reach them at that depth that is!) Can Orillia beat that huh huh huh?   ;~)

Don Cherry played for the Barrie Junior A team (Flyers) when they won their only Memorial Cup. Apparently he now divides his time between his home in Mississauga and and cottage on Wolfe Island just south of his hometown of Kingston. Good guy.

Subject: RE: BS: The Glories of Orillia! Eh?
From: GUEST,daylia

Oops ... thanks for clearing that up, Steve! I've heard the rumours about a Cherry - Barrie connection ever since I was knee-high to a grasshopper - everyone knows he did live here at one time - but I didn't realize we'd 'stolen' him from Kingston!   ;-)   The Flyers were grounded permanently a long time go, but we do have a Junior B team (the Colts) and a brand spankin new arena now too...

sIx, that's not an apt building behind Collier St United - it's the new court buildings (well, they're kinda old now). Remember the old St Mary's Church, right beside the jail? Well in the late 60's they ripped that down and put up a parking lot (where do you think Joni got her inspiration?   ;-) with the new court buildings beside it. Very convenient, a few steps away from the Barrie Bucket...

The sky is still passably clear here - except for those hot humid days when the smog rolls in from TO - but the city has grown so much, the 'light pollution' makes it hard to stargaze unless you're out of town a little. When you left Barrie in late 60's, I think the pop was about 32,000. It's now more like 130,000 - the fastest growing city in Canada, I've heard. (But don't take my word for it - u no what homegrown rumours can be like!)

And please thank your Dad for the work he did creating Centennial Park - I must have spent hundreds and HUNDREDS of summer days with my kids there over the years, at the beach and playground and on the biking trails around the bay. It's only got bigger, better and more beautiful over the years too. ANd Kempefelt Bay is as COLD as ever for swimming, cuz it's so deep ....

Here's that old steam engine at Centennial Park - bet it hasn't changed much! And see the building in the top right corner just behind it? Well, guess what ...that's yet another internationally renowned Weber's Restaurant (Downtowner location)!

I posted the link for the Orillia Weber's Downtowner though, so Little Hawk would see this exciting news:

Singers & Songwriters Wanted For Music Nights In Orillia Location, Contact R. G. 705-429-5817 For Details

Cool, eh? They used to have live Jazz Nights at the Weber's Downtowner in Barrie, but not for a couple years now. Hey LH, this sounds like it's (literally) right up your alley! Maybe we could collaborate on an Ode to Webers ... "Don't Miss That Bypass On A Plate" perhaps? With all due credit to bobad, of course.

I don't think I've ever seen a fire station with a tall tower before.

Have you read the Cooperman sagas? They are something for Canadians to be moderately proud of.

Daylia,

You have a beautiful new arena. One of the nicest that I have been in. I did like playing in the old downtown rink against the Colts when they were a Jr. B. team, but it had some of the worst lighting I ever played in. That is the rink that the Memorial Cup Champion Flyers called hom. The Colts are now an OHL Jr. A team, the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. They can also compete for the Memorial Cup.

Hey LH did you read my 11:43 (Aug 11) post? There's something special waiting for you there ....

Steve, can u tell no one in my family played hockey for the OHA?
AARRGGHH I knew the Colts had been upgraded to Junior A too - that's why they built the new arena (of course). THis is embarrassing! My students always keep me updated about these vital matters, but it's hard to retain everything while trying to keep the focus on, say, workable fingering for the C#- formula pattern. I mean, like, which is more earthshakingly important, after all?   ;-)

Awww sIx, I feel good just knowing I thanked your Dad through you! So again, thank you both ... and yeah, it is amazing they won't close the ole Barrie Bucket. Various organizations (like the Elizabeth Fry) have worked to have it ripped down and rebuilt so many times, but no go. (Needed the new arena more, I guess!) Built in 1843, it's the oldest building in Barrie. And it's no beauty, as I bet you recall. From what I've heard, it's still cold and damp and mangy and badly overcrowded - not to mention full of rats (human and otherwise).

One local I know (dubbed "The Farmer" for being thrown in the Bucket so many times over the years due to his choice of crop) caught a severe case of poison ivy in there once, in February! Go figure ... but the upside is, if you play piano and your Mom has a bit of local influence and she's willing to petition on your behalf, they might let you take her ole piano in there with you. So you can practice the days away. ANother guy I knew got so nimble-fingered after 6 months behind bars he started playing at the local nightclubs after his release!
