Seeing those potties reminds me of of my street earlier this summer. The entire street was torn up and rebuilt and in order to serve their construction workers, the company set up a portapotty on the sidewalk at the edge of my yard. All well and good. Then I discovered that tourists that ventured this far up the hill were also using it! They must have blessed this town for its sensitivity. The potty is long gone; I have no idea what the tourists are using now. |

They figure if that many people are already lined up, then the food must be INCREDIBLE, right? And after standing in line for 20 minutes, they've invested too much time to give up and leave (the Vietnam syndrome)! So they stay. And stay. And stay. Finally they get to eat a greasy hamburger and fries. They have to figure it's better than any other burger and fries...because they waited so long for it. Fascinating how people's minds work! |

Watched the live telecast instead, and I didn't even notice Neil was playing a Taylor (shame on me!). I LOVED that he chose to open with Ian Tyson's "Four Strong Winds" though, and his wife did a lovely job with the harmonies - just took a minute or two for that Moxied, moshed-up rapped-up crowd to get into vintage Canadian folkie mode. There was a lot of awkward shuffling in front of the stage at first. Then he went to the piano and crooned out his brand new "When God Made Me", accompanied by a choir from California. That literally brought tears to my eyes ... (oooooo Neil now I know why I always loved you Neil!) But when all the artists gathered on stage to join in with the grande finale "Rockin in the Free World" (which he dedicated to all us Ontari-arians) - well, did anyone else hear that?!? All went well till the final chorus - and then I think the guitarists started missing a chord change! INstead of going back to the G at the beginning of the line "keep on rockin in the free world", I swear they were holding the E minor. It sounded like doo-doo! That line is repeated umpteen times and the performers were glancing at each other nervously not knowing what was wrong .... and some of them had even stopped playing/singing thinking (or wishing!) the song was over. I was just mortified .... oh puh-leeeze guys, this is in front of the WHOLE WORLD eh? GET IT RIGHT!!!!! But Neil was such a good sport - when the final chord sounded (they did get the sequence right finally) he was just dancing across that stage laughing his head off! ANyway, I'm sure I'm right about that chord change, but none of the reviews I've read even mentioned it. What, the snarly ole critics were being kind for once?!? Or maybe my ears had a glitch that day? JUst wondered if anyone else heard it, so we could compare 'notes'! sIx, your post got me all misty-eyed! We used to skate across the bay as little kids too - but my best memories are a few years later, walking across it at night with my boyfriend, under those sparkling stars, with the golden lights of the city splashing across the ice at our feet --- so romantic! Those trainyards are still there, but the CN station has been closed for years now and they've cleaned the area up alot. One of the old engines was repainted and made into a "monument" at Centennial Park. Remember Centennial Park? I think you'll LOVE this painting - Big Fun on Kempenfelt Bay. See the old City Hall in the background? I set it as a desktop background - looks kinda surreal! I think you'll enjoy this bit of nostalgia too ... bet you can find your old school/church/favourite parks there. And LH, ok Orillia is blessed with 2 beautiful lakes - Couchiching and Simcoe (Kempenfelt Bay is one "finger" of the latter) - BUT .... Kempenfelt Bay is the deepest part of Lake Simcoe - over 100' in places - and therefore has the VERY BIGGEST AND BESTEST whitefish around (if you can reach them at that depth that is!) Can Orillia beat that huh huh huh? ;~) |

I've heard the rumours about a Cherry - Barrie connection ever since I was knee-high to a grasshopper - everyone knows he did live here at one time - but I didn't realize we'd 'stolen' him from Kingston! ;-) The Flyers were grounded permanently a long time go, but we do have a Junior B team (the Colts) and a brand spankin new arena now too... sIx, that's not an apt building behind Collier St United - it's the new court buildings (well, they're kinda old now). Remember the old St Mary's Church, right beside the jail? Well in the late 60's they ripped that down and put up a parking lot (where do you think Joni got her inspiration? ;-) with the new court buildings beside it. Very convenient, a few steps away from the Barrie Bucket... The sky is still passably clear here - except for those hot humid days when the smog rolls in from TO - but the city has grown so much, the 'light pollution' makes it hard to stargaze unless you're out of town a little. When you left Barrie in late 60's, I think the pop was about 32,000. It's now more like 130,000 - the fastest growing city in Canada, I've heard. (But don't take my word for it - u no what homegrown rumours can be like!) And please thank your Dad for the work he did creating Centennial Park - I must have spent hundreds and HUNDREDS of summer days with my kids there over the years, at the beach and playground and on the biking trails around the bay. It's only got bigger, better and more beautiful over the years too. ANd Kempefelt Bay is as COLD as ever for swimming, cuz it's so deep .... Here's that old steam engine at Centennial Park - bet it hasn't changed much! And see the building in the top right corner just behind it? Well, guess what ...that's yet another internationally renowned Weber's Restaurant (Downtowner location)! I did like playing in the old downtown rink against the Colts when they were a Jr. B. team, but it had some of the worst lighting I ever played in. That is the rink that the Memorial Cup Champion Flyers called hom. The Colts are now an OHL Jr. A team, the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. They can also compete for the Memorial Cup. |

Steve, can u tell no one in my family played hockey for the OHA? AARRGGHH I knew the Colts had been upgraded to Junior A too - that's why they built the new arena (of course). THis is embarrassing! My students always keep me updated about these vital matters, but it's hard to retain everything while trying to keep the focus on, say, workable fingering for the C#- formula pattern. I mean, like, which is more earthshakingly important, after all? ;-) Awww sIx, I feel good just knowing I thanked your Dad through you! So again, thank you both ... and yeah, it is amazing they won't close the ole Barrie Bucket. Various organizations (like the Elizabeth Fry) have worked to have it ripped down and rebuilt so many times, but no go. (Needed the new arena more, I guess!) Built in 1843, it's the oldest building in Barrie. And it's no beauty, as I bet you recall. From what I've heard, it's still cold and damp and mangy and badly overcrowded - not to mention full of rats (human and otherwise). One local I know (dubbed "The Farmer" for being thrown in the Bucket so many times over the years due to his choice of crop) caught a severe case of poison ivy in there once, in February! Go figure ... but the upside is, if you play piano and your Mom has a bit of local influence and she's willing to petition on your behalf, they might let you take her ole piano in there with you. So you can practice the days away. ANother guy I knew got so nimble-fingered after 6 months behind bars he started playing at the local nightclubs after his release! Warms the ole ticker right up remembering that .... |
