Half the equation seemed to be whether you could find boutique shopping, a skinny latte and a whine bar while waiting for your over-achieving offspring to finish their after-school club ponyride. Not real life, but interesting. |

The environment was one of the categories they scored points for, but this actually seemed to be based on statistics of how many hectars of piblic parks there were. So naturally the likes of Harrogate did rather well. Now, I like a nice park as well as the next man, but it's not the basis I use to describe an area's environmental standing. |

We were on holiday years ago in the north east of Scotland and diverted to Peterhead for something to eat and somewhere to feed baby. The locals all looked strangely at me when I went for a pint and asked if I was there on business; then if I was lost; then if I was visiting someone. When I answered 'no' to all they ran out of ideas as to why I could possibly be there. The concept of going there as a holiday or in passing was a completely alien one to them - says something about a place. |
