Rubbish is used as a noun or adjective. Trash is used as a noun or adjective or verb. So, yes and no.

Over here "to rubbish" has drifted into parlance, therefore a verb in Europe too.

Trash is rubbish and trash is also garbage.

trash rubbish garbage

Same same same

In the US of A you can "trash" other people but you can't
"rubbish" them or "garbage" them.

My definition of "to trash a person" is to speak very bad about them,
spread negative rumors about them etc. so that his or her reputation is garbage...

But do I understand your last post correctly Moo, to mean that in Europe "to rubbish" a person means the same thing as "to trash a person's reputation"?

Absolutely correct Azizi! Different usage!

Here you might "trash" a car but you would "rubbish" a person (well some people would!).

Thanks for trying Mooman, but I have to admit that I'm still somewhat confused [since English sometimes is a foreign language].

What does "trashing" a car mean to you?

And now I'm also wondering about the thread that birthed this one...
In European terms, what does the current Mudcat thread "Are Muslim Rubbish?" mean?

I was quick to criticise the wording of that title because I thought it asked "Are all Muslims [so bad that they should be considered] rubbish?"

Or to put it another way, I thought the title asked "Are [all] Muslims [so worthless that they should be treated like] rubbish?..

But now since I've learned that Europeans have a vernacular phrase "to rubbish someone" I'm not sure if the thread title means the same thing as the American question "Should [all] Muslims be trashed?-meaning "Should we be talking bad about all Muslims?"

These may be the same questions, but I think there are some subtle differences.

I'd appreciate your input, and the input of other European &
non-European posters.

Thanks in advance.

Azizi

Hi Azizi,

Trashing a car would, to me, treating it very badly indeed and leaving it in a very poor or unworkable condition. My teenage daughter also trashes her room leaving it in a deplorable condition!

The "Muslims" thread was started by the inimitable jOhn from Hull who has started other "Rubbish" threads, so far be it for me to actually know what he meant. But I think he meant rubbish in the sense of garbage. It was a provoking question, as many of jOhn's threads are and he immediately answered "No". I've met jOhn a couple of times and know he is sincere and did indeed work for a Muslim-owned business and was talking about the need for racial and religious harmony, whatever one might think about the wisdom of that particular thread title.

Hope that helps a little!

Peace

moo (getting more confused by the minute!)

Okay..thanks Moo..I think I'm getting it..

And I did notice that jOhn from Hull answered his question with an emphatic NO..

so leaving that aside, how about I muddy the water a bit more
and introduce a couple other meanings of 'trash'...

In African American culture and among those influenced by that culture, "talkin trash" can mean boasting to impress someone {say a guy tryin to "hit on" meaning "get next to" a girl he's interested in}.

Also people of the same gender can talk trash to each other, boasting about their physical and material accomplishments.
In that context it's very much like bein jive and talkin jive {this definition of jive is not the older jazz one of talkin hip}.

But "talkin trash" can also mean "signifyin". "Signifyin" is an African American tradition of ritualistic insult exchanges among two people {usually males] that is also called "playin the dozens", "cappin", "dissin" and various other regional terms.

I should mention that the rapper Timbaland had [what I would consider to be} an X rated song called "Talkin Trash".
I'm sure that there have probably been Blues songs and others with that title..

So all this to say that I guess this "Is trash/rubbish" question depends on who you ask and where and when.

Positive vibrations,

Azizi

Over here trash in MONEY!

Many poorer sections of the population here eke out a living by rummaging in bins for plastic bottles, tins, cardboard and newspapers. These they sell to the re-cycling companies.

We keep all the above for an elderly guy who rides around on a three wheeled bike with a big box on the back. In turn he gets rid of the garden rubbish for us.

I have seen trikes piled 3m high with polystyrene foam on its way to be re-cycled.

Theres money in them there gashbins

Rubbish, in the way that joHn of Hull uses it, is nonsense. It is an archaic usage in some parts of the US, but still used and understood in others. You've got to get with the program, Azzizi, elsewise they'll get with you, and when they do, they'll get you gone.

MTed, being a member of an international discussion forum has made me much more aware of the different meanings that English words and phrases may have in different English speaking nations and among different peoples withing the same nation.

Since I enjoy learning about word origins & meanings {and paticularly slang}, I love these types of Mudcat threads.

So if I understand you correctly, when joHn of Hull asked the rhetorical question "Are Muslims rubbish?", he meant "Are Muslims nonsense?" Is that right?

And I'm not sure what you meant when you wrote:

"You've got to get with the program, Azzizi, elsewise they'll get with you, and when they do, they'll get you gone."

-snip-

I think you meant I've got to 'get up to speed' learning the meanings of British vernacular. Is this close to what you meant?

And btw I assume that your meaning was friendly, right?

Also, I'm sure you're too nice a guy to do so, but some people might blame my efforts to precisely understand what is being said on my astrological placement of Virgo rising. Some people think that Virgo's fondness for details is nitpicking. But I wouldn't say that.

LOL!!!

The argument is academic folks. Tony's latest quango, The Department of Meaningless Terminological Updates states in its latest white paper (100% recycled, of course):

The use of the words trash, garbage, and rubbish will cease forthwith. Instead, term such as deferred breeze block, or deferred insulation will be officially required.

In accordance with time honoured tradition, the Minister then stood on his head in the corner, and wet himself.
